Hi and welcome!

> Google usually composes its own page description based on the text of the first paragraph of the indexed page

Actually, the abstract you see in the Google search results is usually the paragraph containing the keywords searched for.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There is Google SafeSearch which will filter out X rated sites from the search results automatically, regardless of what's searched for.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

If you can figure it out, let me know. DaniWeb has been included in and then kicked out of and then reincluded in Google News more times than I can count.

Check out Google Custom Search.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Working on it right now. Making some changes to the menu. :)

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I didn't write the parser. It's GeSHi.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

They do highlight different keywords. That aside, the code bbcode is directly tied into the languages available in our code snippet library.

What's TOR??

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There was a bug yesterday. It was fixed early this morning. Thanks for the heads up.

Josh, I seriously think it's a bad idea to invest all of your savings in the stock market. If you want to do that, at least take half and put it into a high yield CD or money market.

I trade technology stocks, primarily up and coming companies that I'm familiar with. For example, I bought Red Hat a couple of years back before the launch of RH Enterprise and Fedora.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I put Coffee House but not for the Geek's Lounge but due to the DaniWeb Feedback Forum and Area 51 and all of the other private staff forums in there.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It should be noted that there are also many threads on DaniWeb that take on the form of ongoing discussions, and what I don't want to do is turn DaniWeb into a bug ticket system. Therefore, the 'solved' link is meant as an aid when browsing the site, and a deterrent to resurrecting threads that have already been solved, but can't be any more than just that.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

See... I can't view anyone's latest rep for some reason...

Fixed.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I designed the certificates myself - they're not a vBulletin feature. The avatar was resized to ensure that everyone's fits, since the member certificate is rather small in size.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Because it automatically resizes your avatar to be a perfect square. Your avatar is very long so it will appear stretched.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

There are two ways to do it. The first is to use CSS and absolute positioning. You would create a hidden div and then use the a:hover css property to set it to be visible when the link is hovered over. This is the way that the dropdown menus in our silver navigation menu are generated.

The second way is to use Javascript / DHTML. A quick google search for javascript tooltip should result in a good few ways to accomplish this with relative ease. This is the way that the forum / thread description hovers are done.

Thank you :)

We WILL help you. We'll answer your questions if there's something specific about classes or polymorphism that is confusing you. We'll point you towards online tutorials on inheritance. But we won't just say, "It's okay you don't understand it. We'll write it for you and you can just submit it without being able to do it yourself." In other words, we will help you learn.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think mariocatch is confused that silveto_smiley expects us to write his program for him, which we won't do according to our forum rules. We only do homework problems if you put our name on it instead of your own.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Make sure you have no line breaks in your htaccess file, with one rule per line.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Umm ... huh? Am I missing something? Welcome to DaniWeb!

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hi and welcome :)

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm not sure what you mean. That's just some other vBulletin forum. You see, DaniWeb is based off of the vBulletin forum system. I then expanded on that system to incorporate a portal, blogs, tutorials, a link directory, code snippets, whie papers, etc etc. And, of course, our unique design.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Wouldn't it be great if the most votes go to the option of refusing to participate in polls?

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yup, it's a built-in vBulletin feature :)

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

We're still talking about an average of 2,000 real life people on the site at once ya know :) At the time of The Dude's posting, there were still over 1,300 real people on the site.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

When you quick reply to a post, you're just using AJAX to throw the new post up without actually refreshing the page. The new post made is the only thing on the page that updates, to save you from a page load.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yesterday I went ahead and made a change to my rel=nofollow policy. While it is still enabled in the forums, since IMO external links within forum posts are not meant to be "endorsed" by the website, blog entries posted by staff writers as well as featured blog entries do not use rel=nofollow. Therefore, the natural linking to/from the blogosphere is not broken.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's never a good idea to advertise anywhere JUST for the backlink. Real traffic is much more important. Posting in relevant forums can make you a leader in your industry, give your site authority, generate word of mouth and viral advertising, and make both you and your site reputable.

This is the first step towards a viral marketing campaign where lots of other sites constantly link to you organically because you know what you're talking about and are an authority in your industry.

ColdFusion and PHP are server-side programming languages which need to interact with a database ... the database could either be MySQL, MS SQL, Oracle, etc. Although I'm not familiar with the details, a database specialist should be able to import an Oracle db into MySQL or such.

How much to pay a developer is dependant upon how much experience they have, how sought after they are, how good they are, and so many other factors. It could range from $10/hour for an undergraduate computer science student to $200/hour and up for a professional with 20 years work experience.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Typically about 250 of them are bots at any given time. If you go to the who's online page you can see which are and which aren't bots.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Your set-up is perfectly fine, but if you use *very* bad SEO practices (ie the kind that will get you banned from Google) with one of the sites, I believe it can carry over to the other sites.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This is actually normal for us. We'll usually peak at over 2,000 early afternoon. Last week we hit nearly 5,000 users online at once.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I wish I could help you but I really don't know. However, it would probably be more beneficial for both you and the developer do either come up with a fixed price in advance or by the hour. Once the system is developed, it shouldn't be very time consuming at all to migrate in all the items, especially if they're already in some type of database.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Superpages is too, no? We have Superpages in my house :)

It might be that there are multiple datacenters feeding the Google toolbar.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Doesn't Microsoft Office have some type of webart repository?

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Not that I know of. Of course you can detect the IP address and resolve the hostname of your visitors on the fly (although it might slow down page loading times) but I don't think it would be possible to foolproof detect whether that hostname is a proxy or not??

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Unfortunately I don't know of a way around proxy servers. Do you requite email confirmation for newly registered members? If you have someone's email and their IP address, you may be able to get their ISP to take action if they are being abusive.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm indifferent. They're reorganizing their services and AJAX'ing it up a bit.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Would this video have gotten so much attention if they were guys? Even The Dude commented in the first post that girls going at it is something you don't see very much. I didn't mean by my comment that I would expect guys to behave this way, but rather it wouldn't be as unusual to see. Either way, anyone going at it like this I find disgusting. Society has just trained us that seeing guys behave this way in a You Tube video wouldn't really make us do a double take.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, but slightly more expected.

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Thank you for the relief in that my link directory is not hurting me, and for the much appreciated praise. :)

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sitemaps is a part of Google Webmaster Tools :)

Dani 4,675 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think it's disgusting.

DaniWeb corners use JQuery to dynamically insert multiple divs at the top and bottom of the div that needs to be rounded using the same technique as Spaiz illustrated.
