I can't believe she made me present that Flash game I made.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Thanks. Yeah, I went through some nasty sickness. From flu then to pink eye. Now I just have a really bad cough that can wake up the dead. Dani gave me some Sucrets to suck on... ;)

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Yeah, congrats. Now I feel like crap from the flu. Damn, do I hate sore throats and headaches!

This is a good FAQ on ColdFusion written by the popular Ben Forta.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Thanks for the compliment Paul. I still couldn't believe when I heard that "some girl" (before I met Dani) got the license plate "CSCGAL." I just couldn't believe it!

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Paul, just out of curiousity... do you like Einstein? Why that name?

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Nice origin! I made up the name "inscissor" back in 6th grade. I entered the science fair and did a project on dinosaurs. In my report I wrote about the T-Rex having "inscissors" thinking it was spelled correctly (it's spelled incisor). Anyways, no one said anything, and I was one of the winners. So obviously I thought it was spelled correctly and continued spelling it like that for years to come. I never really used the word (how often do you use the word incisor anyways) until one time, I think it was 11th or 12th grade I looked it up. I couldn't find it. I did however find the word "incisor" which meant "tooth." Then I realized what a dope I was. I have to admit, the word "inscissor" is a lot cooler than "incisor." I've used "inscissor" for a million accounts and I guess it just stuck. :D

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

That's cool. I'm not a big fan of YIM though. I don't know too many people that use it. Most of them, unfortunately use AOL or AIM. I'd rather use ICQ but no one I know uses that either. :D You would think, AOL owning ICQ, that they would connect both networks.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

But yeah, now that I think of it, I remember seeing something about it in Slashdot a while ago. I don't really follow PostgreSQL nor Novell, so I didn't pay too much attention to it.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Portrege SQL Server? I've never heard of it. Got any info on it (how it compares to other databases)? It seems to me that MySQL and PostgreSQL Servers are still one of the top open source databases on the market.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

It will definitely stimulate MySQL AB's popularity in the market. Companies sometimes find open source software to be a risk because they feel that open source software does not offer much liability. After all, if you use something free or open source, who do you blame if something goes wrong? Who can you sue?

I think the fact that Novell is involved, will definitely boost MySQL AB's rep, giving it an image of reliability and security. After all, why would a big company like Novell use it?

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague
samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Don't you love when you solve the problem all by yourself? :D

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Well, it's assumed that we are talking about a network in the business place. Linux is cheaper hands down as far as price. Also it's very reliable. The only charges that a company would have to pay are in training the staff, consulting, as troubleshooting because it's not as intuitive as Windows (this would be the case for Windows too, but not as much as Linux).

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

That's why take everything you read with a grain of salt, even if it's from someone you favor.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Nice resouce, but I'd have more faith in it if it was someone other than Novell itself that provided it. It reminds of the positive statistics private companies and groups make about Microsoft (how good their software is, reliable, etc.) You think that because on the outside they're not related to Microsoft.... but who funds it... yes... Microsoft funds the research gone in the statistics. :D

No matter what the review is or comment is, it will always be biased. Why? Because we're human.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

He'll give it to you after he learns C++. ;)

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Alice is really Dani trying to be cool. Don't tell her I said anything otherwise she'll kill me.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

She looks like Maryln Monroe.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

That's rough. Sorry you're going through so much. I still haven't suffered the loss of a friend (thank God) but I can imagine it must be rough. For stuff like this, I always have friends and family to get me through it... hope you do to! ;)

This book is excellent:

Sams Teach Yourself Shell Programming in 24 Hours (2nd Edition)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672323583/qid=1034404576/sr=2-3/ref=sr_2_3/102-8089820-6681729

It received good reviews. Here's my personal review from Amazon.com:

This is probably one of the best books by Sams that I've read. If you want to start shell programming, you've picked up the perfect book, even if you're new to Unix. It starts off by first getting you familiar with the basic Unix commands: ls, pwd, cp, mv, cat, etc. and telling you the basics of Unix and Shells. Then it goes over file systems and modifying attributes. Later when you're comfortable, it holds your hand through the shell programming syntax, logic, substititution, regular expressions, and essential tools such as awk and sed. This book contains other gems and snippets that have helped me through many projects. Overall good buy

If you want to learn Perl, I suggest "Beginning Perl by Simon Cozens, Peter Wainwright."
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1861003145/qid=1034404832/sr=1-4/ref=sr_1_4/102-8089820-6681729?v=glance

I prefer Wrox books over O'Reilly because Wrox tends to be more down to earth and friendlier when learning the material. O'Reilly books on the other hand, aren't as so... however they make good references. Also, most of the time Wrox books have more pages for the same price and are more visual (Wrox books contain more screenshots). In all the O'Reilly books that I've seen, most of it is text, and use very little diagrams.

It's ok. You're entitled to your opinion. The same way I think Linux is pointless as a desktop operating system.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

I think Anime is pointless.. Are we talking about the porn, or like that dragon ball Z show ?

I'm a big follower of anime. Why don't you like it? I read your profile. It sounds like you're a Linux follower. Let me change some of the words on your post so you can see how your comment sounds to me. I'll replace "anime" with Linux related stuff.

I think Linux is pointless.. Are we talking about the Turbo Linux, or like that Red Hat operating system ?

Anime & Linux - both have quite a bit of followers. Both have different classes. Anime has genres, Linux has distributions.

Anime Porn (Hentai) & Turbo Linux - both are one of the least popular in their own kingdom in the US.

Red Hat Operating System & Dragon Ball Z - both are probably the most popular in the US, and most likely backed up by more marketing than any other genre/distribution of it's class. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's the best. Also, people that don't know much about Linux/Anime, have at least once in their lifetime heard about Red Hat Linux or Dragon Ball Z. Red Hat Linux can sometimes be considered as a "kiddie" operating system by Linux gurus. Good for beginners. The same thing goes with Dragon Ball Z.

So, if you were to see this comment:

I think Linux is pointless.. Are we talking about the Turbo Linux, or like that …

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Yeah I consider Thundercats more American Anime, if there's even a classification for it. I agree with you however, that a lot of what's coming out is crap, probably because they think that it's a cartoon, and think it should be made for children, thus short plots with a simple story, with some goofy slaptic and corny phrases... what a mess.

I like Anime because it's the complete opposite of American cartoons. The stories are actually better; they're more involved. One thing I love is character development. A character learns throughout the entire series and looks back on what he's learned. Also, many deal with real life issues. Not everything is about little monsters that shoot out fire. That's just the story. There are also no restrictions. Just because its like a cartoon (I even hate relating that word to Anime) it doesn't have to be PG. It does whatever it needs to do to get it's point across, whether is showing blood or scenes that portray sex, just like a R rated movie. I have to add that most of best movies I've seen have NOT been rated G or PG13. The art is another thing all together.

Most of the time, the artwork is a lot better. I think many of you can agree on that. The music is also better I think. Most series have their own soundtrack with usually more than one soundtrack (Initial D has over 8 soundtrack CDs I think).

Just …

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Great I got the theme song stuck in my head. http://members.fortunecity.com/toontracker/grimm.html

Lyrics:

Hey come along and join the fun,
It's the time for fairy tales.
Magical kingdoms in the South.
Come along, come along.

Meet friendly elves and witches too
in a world of fairy tales.
Enchanted castles wait for you,
come along, come along.
To where life is a fantasy
and every story ends so happily. (giggling)

This is the place where dreams come true.
A world of fairy tales for you.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Yeah it was good. I still prefer original Japanese anime through, undubbed. When I was little I used to watch Thundercats, Voltron, Noozles, Adventures of the Little Koala, Grim's Fairy Tales - all good series. Sucks that there's very few Anime fans out there.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Haha. Yeah, those were the "Marmalade Boy" episodes. Really good series. Nice love story... but I don't know if you like that or not... most girls prefer that stuff. Still my favorite series of all time has got to be "Initial D." It's a racing series. The CG racing scenes are just outstanding. The music also adds more excitement. What I like also is that use real brand cars, not fictitious.

Here's some info:
http://www.tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?propertycode=ITD&categorycode=VAN&page=introduction

Here's a trailer of it:
http://www.tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?propertycode=ITD&categorycode=VAN&page=trailers

And I just saw the trailer. If you're REALLY going to get into this series, I recommend you watching the original Japanese subtitled version. What I hate is when they "Americanize" it - which means "chopping off it's balls." (They've done it in the past, with popular series such as Speed Racer, Dragon Ball Z - they were more serious series, but because America toned it down, it made it seem for kiddies.) The original series is uncut of course, but their voices are better, and the music is better. I have all the original episodes, if you'd like to watch them, let me know.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

I'm curious if anyone here likes Anime. If so, what are your favorite series?

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Yeap. It appears to be. I did a few searches and it appears to have the same items/info as Amazon.com.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

In the section "Latest IT News" I mentioned that Amazon.com has opened up a web service where applications can query the service(information about goods), and the service spits back an XML file of whatever they queried. So you can have a form on your web site where the user can search for an item from Amazon.com. After the user submits, you can program your script to query an XML file from the Amazon Web Service according to the values submitted by the form. To get a better understanding, I suggest checking out:

http://www.macromedia.com/desdev/mx/coldfusion/articles/wsamazon.html

Jeff Houser explains it very well.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

What, you're now advertising for Microsoft? =)

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Pretty good. She gave me an A for the semester. My final report turned out to be 70 pages. It was a lot of work, but I can't complain. I learned a lot, especially about XML and Web services.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Sounds like a good idea. The overall idea of having a list of links in its own section sounds good, but I don't know how many people would bother with it... at this point anyways. A lot of the forums I visit that implement this don't have many links in it. Just my two cents.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

I think it's going to be hard for people to use. So many times in a post you want to put up links and it's much easier to just put in a post as you're giving some other story or just writing about it.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

I'm currently working on a project using Java Server Pages, XML and Oracle. I've worked with Java in the past, but have not worked with JavaServer Pages (currently still learning). It doesn't seem that bad, just tedious work - more code to initiate DB connections, and other processes compared to the other popular web languages (Perl, PHP, ColdFusion, ASP, etc.) If you have worked with JSP, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Here are some good web sites I visit for resources:

What happened to Lucy? I haven't seen her lately. I hope she got run over by a truck.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

You better take that back Paul. Guys are not allowed to use words such as "cute", "adorable" and phrases such as "kool beans."

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

Why did you even bother? The post wasn't THAT important. :D

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

By the way, the above message "guest" is me. Not a global mod anymore so I can't change it.

samaru 145 a.k.a inscissor Team Colleague

I hear that. That E-Commerce class is killing me. I went in there expecting programming... and now we have to do all this business research. Apparently, the programming part comes in the next follow-up course, "Advanced E-commerce" which was what I originally wanted to take. Doh.
