i've use NetObjects Fusion 4 (5 was a disaster) some, GoLive barely, started with HOTDog (like v 1 or 2), and a bit of HoTMeLPro - been crashin w/Dreamweaver 4 for the last month & LOVE it. i DEFINITELY wouldnt understate Flash - got a friend at work who can do some madd stuff with it, never mind whats on the world. basically i think a lot come down to what ur used to.... 8)

Pentium 83MHz - if memory serves me correctly thats an upgrade from an x486 chipset, which means ur runnin a 16bit bus. dependin on how much RAM ur runnin - & how its paired - u can at least run the Win95 gui, probably right on up to WinME if u shud care to, so i'm sure itll run a unix flavr on it w/no probs relating to cpu. 4 GB is plenty, the rest just might matter. sound like u got nothin to lose - amazin how much frustratin tech can teach ya! - & u can alwys f-disk (in Linux 2?), so pick a free distro if u dont have any reasons 4 a particular distro. me, i'm goin redhat sometime b4 the yr 2525 :!:

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

er, actually i DID hit it from my mac, bcuz if i'd a hit it from my pc i'd b doin the shorts thing... :-X

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

i hit it from my pc - otherwise i'd be cleaning my shorts right abt now!!! ;D

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

ROFLBMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

LOL! yeah, musta been that horrible mac - afterall the CD couldnt have been mislabled!!! ;) ;D

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

hmmm, well, i've worked w/a lot of tech ppl, so i'm not so sure about mac users not being technical... well, actually, if i understand ur post correctly, i'd have 2 say yes, prob most mac usrs rnt very tech oriented. basically the mac was marketed towards ppl who werent really nuts & bolts oriented, just wanted to find a bettr way of doing what they needd getting done, done. that marketing philos still carries over 2 2day - ull find most non-tech orients professional ppl (lawyers, doctors, literary types, etc) use macs, w/notable exceptions being those in mid-2-large corp envrions & those who 4 whatevr reason need a prog that is either only or best used on a pc.

Macs were always (& still r) better @ tasks that didnt/dont rely particularly on cpu intensive tasks as a measure of performance. for instance, db, spreadsheet, static-design and (like arch/engnrng draws w/no anim) word proc (pre Office2k in particular) tasks are really the forte of the pc - the cpu does by&large the majority of the work, with little taxation of peripheral devices. things like animation, audio, graphics & movie/video have - since the demise of the Amiga (w/its Fat Angus, Lazy Susan, etc.chips - real names, kid ya NOT!) - been the forte of the Mac. image refresh rates (not vid scan rates) have always been quicker. i'm not a mac techie (YET!) but it seems 2 me that the peripheral devices (vid, sound, tablet cards/devices) have 4 …

mac guru?! KEWL - well, let me check my Websters an check out what guru actually means.... in the mean time i'll post a reply on your "Buying a new Mac" thread... :-)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

i'm new here (nice place u have here btw Danni!), so i hope this isnt out of place, but i think Macs r pretty cool (cept theyre TOTAL hogs on RAM, whatsup w/that?!). just upgraded my iBook from 9.04 to 9.1 b4 i logged on & it was a breeze... mostly i use pc's but am starting to learn Dreaweaver and figured my iBook was the way to go. ok, that's my 2.5 cents, guess i'll dry up & blow away now! ;)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

just read all 14 reviews - i VERY much like ur style. seems to be honest (after all, i'm really NOT a mind reader) and definitely to the point! just about tripled my to-buy book list w/just 2 pages of surfing :D

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

yeah, i'm not 2 happy w/that thought, but i agree - i try to avoid MS prods 4 the most part. i figure if i'm going 2 work @ becoming proficient at a prog, and its oriented towards a particular platform then i should learn the platform as well 2 make sure i can ferret out prog & OS issues. means i need to delve into Win2K land b4 i go the SQL route. unless, of course, BG decides to port it to Linux! 8)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

hmmmmmpppffffffffffff!!!!!!! i was just searching for webhosting co's that offered Oracle as the db - man, i couldnt find *ANYTHING* under a Franklin month!!!! whats up with THAT!!!! >:( i might have to go the MySQL route instead, but i think i'd b *VERY* unhappy w/that choice. my aim is to gain SQL skills within a bonifide (ie, corporate) db environ, e-commerce oriented yet affordable thru a hosting co. @ a hundred bucks (or more!) a month i might as well look into setting up my own direct-access webserver...... :(

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

um, ok!!! ??? like THAT came out of left field!!! :D anyway heres the url u requested: [thread]126[/thread] ...& btw, i really NOT mad, but i sure wouldnt mind some insight! :)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

LOL!!! .....woops, forgot: i'm still not talkin 2 u 2 4 not answrin my C++ vs. Java ? earlier! :'(

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

why dont either of u edit out the url? ???

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

This is a post that I have very little time to make but would like to put my 2 cents in on for this thread. 1st off - i definitely 2nd the KUDOs to inscissors on the post - nicely done. but, 2ndly, as a good techie should ;) i need to voice my differing opinion :!: the following is a very rough sketch of what i want to say, and i'll polish it w/some edits over the next coupla days.

html
css
javascript
cgi via pearl
php4

Dreamweaver
Flash
Access/ColdFusion/Domino/Oracle/other web-centric db (record-locking or distributed-replication, as needed)
Photoshop
Illustrator

c/c++
java
jsp
asp
xml

acrobat
gif/jpeg solution
mov/mpeg solution
avi/mp3 solution
compression solution

dhtml
ssi
vrml
wml
j2me

hmmmmm, but which order? & this is just s/w oriented - w/much more out thre, nver mind things like ssl & vpn, & i completely ignored bilateral communciations techs like emails & chats... so much to know, so much to learn, so much to show, so much to earn!

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

ok, so this isnt exactly Java related, but.... u might find the following link interesting should u decide to delve into VRML a bit more (actually, of course, that all depends upon ur jumping off point a@ this time): http://wdvl.internet.com/Authoring/VRML/

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

LOL, mustnt forget the T-shirt!!! ;D

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

well considering how long it takes a really nicely done Flashy site takes to load from 56k vs broadband, i think that an equally well done VRML site would have comparable download times - as such having VRML amongst 1s bag-o-tricks might just give a competive edge in landing a piece of work given the right circumstances. 4 now it may well be dead, but if its still relatively easy to view through a browser(plugin) then for me i think its still a worthwhile tek to learn - but theres just soooo many minutes in a day...

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

unfortunately i havent played w/VRML for over a year - think i used to use COSMO viewer or some such; personally i think VRML was about 10+yrs ahead of its time - from what little futzin around w/it i did it seemed like its most suited to broadband connections - something that was exactly a catchphrase of the late eighties/early 90's!!!! i'm still looking forward to getting into it - but its about the 15th or 20th item on my list of technologies to pickup, so.......

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

u r THE MAN!!! very kewl sites - thanx!!! ;D

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

can this be integrated into VRML worlds or are they 2 different animals? ???

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

actually i think working on a tut is pretty kewl as well - we're putting 2gether a CCNA tut @work - mostly flash: VERY KEWL! - thats aimed at getting us all cert'd after 8 weeks (3.75hrs/wk training); i'm 1 of 2 editors on the proj & its a lot of fun! 8)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

did yall ever finish the tutorial? sounds interesting...

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

didnt read the whole thing but i thing u did a really nice job on it - even if u did write it, as u implied, as if u were pulling out ur own tooth! ;D 8)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

dont 4get DOS's ftp...

here's a www reference...
http://html.tucows.com/webmaster/tut/dosftp.html

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

no, Long Island,NY; the URL will prob give u all the info u need, but basically we use it to remote access pc's to help troubleshoot configs; the caller needs to have connectivity & we have'm download an applet we send'm; i'm considering getting the personal ed 4 myself, but thats like number 8 or 9 on my list of things 2do...

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

if ur still interested in a browser based remote access tool try checking out www.expertcity.com - we use it @work & its pretty kewl 8)

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Thank you. I'm a bit concerned about eye-strain so it looks like I might just be leaning more towards an LCD at this point. Thanks again.

aeinstein 79 Team Member - aka kaynine Team Colleague

Hey Alpha, how's that LCD doing? I'm in the market for a new viewscreen quite made a decision as to the CRT v. LCD scenarios. A large LCD would fit quite nicely on my desk but a comparably sized+ CRT would fit much better in my bank acct. Also, any difference in eye-strain? TIA
