Thong Ispector...thanks for the web site info, I know how to use Ohms law...I just couldn't find the wattage figures to calculate my power requirements. This site gives accurate figures with a comfortable fudge margin.

I was looking at processors at eBay, and found a bundle including a Asus A8V motherboard with a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939 processor, the add stated that it was a 2.2GHz, but when I went to Tiger Direct to price the two items, their specs show it as being 2.0GHz and didn't list one at 2.2GHz. Am I missing something here?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I agree...read, read, read. Know the product, and I reiterate...make sure there is a gurantee agaist DOAs. I wouldn't even look an item that lists as either "incomplete", or "as is", most of these are not returnable and don't work! If you go to eBay and look at the transaction ratings, you can start to get an idea of the kind of complaints that buyers have. This in turn should help arm you with the information to make a safe and enjoyable puchase. One last suggestion, when you go to pay, use Pay Pal, they act as a third party and have some distict advantages if there is a problem.
Happy hunting. dcc

There are a couple of other things to watch for, make sure there is a guarantee against DOA, read everything in the description, never buy as is, and basically hope that you don't get raptus regaliter!

I thoght so. I'm doing a rebuild because my processor is a Slot A.
I'm going with a AMD Athlon 64 3400+, and a Asus K8V board. I will check out the two suggest sites, thanks.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I know that slot A processors aren't in production, and I have been told that socket A processors are also out of production, is this true?

I pulled the cover and my power supply is a Antec PP-303X300W, does that help? dcc

It looks like I'm about to purchase a Asus K8V SE Deluxe motherboard to up grade my computer which has a 300watt power supply, and I'm tying to find out if that will be enough. Are there any other compatability issues that I should be aware of?
I do appreciate the help, I'm slowly but surely getting there. dcc

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I'm begining to be less concerned about spending another $150. and buying a Asus K8V Deluxe with an AMD Athlon 64 3400+ bundle, than looking at the possible head aches I've read about making the Abit KV7-V and the Atlon XP2900+ run properly. Is this significant enough of an improvement to warrent spending the extra dough? I'm a little tight, but could manage this if it's worth it perfomance wise. The price for this bundle is $299. with a $100. rebate, and about $16. shipping. And of course this bundle doesn't come with any memory, so there's another $45. for a good 512MB stick. One last question, will my 300watt power supply support the Asus board.
Thanks for the help guys...dcc

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Thanks, I'm basically going to be using this for burning DVDs, email, and the occasional picture. How far up the food chain should I go, and what is the difference? By the way, I made an error in my prvious statement, the memory is not Crucial, it's Ultra.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

As advised, I went to Tiger Direct and looked at mobo bundles and found what looks like a good deal. The board is an Abit KV7-V Via Socket A ATX, with a AMD Athlon XP 2900+ processor, and a Crucial 512MB PC32000 DDR module. It's priced at $199.00 with a $70.00 rebate, this looks like a good deal, but the reviews for the board were very mixed, and I couldn't find any information on the Athlon. I would really appreciate some input, is this deal too good to be true? dcc

Thanks again Catweazle, good idea, I was using Google and I will try another location.

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Catweazle..in response to your suggestion..I live in the Northern California foothills, and I don't have a bench mark as yet to place a reasonable price on this prodject, but I would guess between $200. - $300.
belama..Newegg is another with good prices and a good rep., I was hoping for something more specific. I am a novice, and I don't want to build a monster, I just want to be able to run a CAD program and burn some DVDs.
Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it. dcc

I went to download a free media player of whom we won't mention (winamp) and received a message telling me that I either had a corrutped installer, or a problem with my hard drive. I had tried to down load to my C drive the first time, so I tried the download a second time trying to use the D drive, with the same results. The previous evening I downloaded a Microsoft product without any problems, any ideas what might be happening? dcc

I have a Microstar K7-Pro (MS6195) mother board in the computer that was given to me, and I had two goals in mind: 1st was to increase my RAM to 768MB, and 2nd was to install a DVD burner. I've found three new sticks of Kingston PC 100 for $120.00, that's not bad. The bad news is that with my current proccessor (AMD K86) it could take over four hours to burn a two hour movie, as I understand it. So rather than spend money on what I'm being told is now a relic, I'm now looking into replacing the mainboard with a bare bones system. What's the best bang for the buck...bearing in mind that I'm finacially challenged. dcc

I sent a 1.88 MB ASF stream to a friend of mine, and he gets 17 seconds into playing it and it stops. He's XP, and I downloaded MP10 and Service Pac 2 for him thinking this would solve his problem, it didn't. He can send this to some else and they can play it, so it's not a corrupted file. It had been suggested to me that the video codec might be too old to play an ASF, this dosen't sound right, he has a Dell Dimension 2400 that's just over a year old, this is five years newer than mine and I don't have any problem playing it....I'm using Media Player 9. Short of an exorcisim, does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have been trying to gather the info to puchase more memory which will be compatible with my mother board. I have a Microstar K7 Pro mother board, and as I understand it, I need to stay with the following specs.
PC100, 168-Pin SDRAM, configuration of 32x8, DIMM type: unbuffered, CAS Latency=2, low density, single sided, and non ECC. I previously posted a question regarding my finding PC133 in my computer after reading in the manual that it was PC100, and now know that PC133 will work, now I want to know if the above listed specs are set in stone. I would appreciate any and all help, new kid on the block. :?:

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

I have a Microstar K7 Pro (MS6195) main board that has 196MB of RAM, and I want to increase it to it's max cap of 768MB. My owners manual list the memory as being 168-pin unbuffered DIMM, which supports a 3.3v PC100 SDRAM. I pulled one of the modules out to see what kind of specifics I could find, and found out that the module was PC133. The computer works, so this must not be a problem, but it sure confuses me. I'm looking for three sticks of 256MB.....can some one tell me specifically what will work? I'm unfamiliar with manufacturers and could use some advice in that area also. And last of all, how does a PC133 work in a system that supports a PC133?

What is over clocking and how is it done?

dcc 88 Posting Virtuoso

Thanks, that's what I was expecting, too bad- it makes upgrading memory expensive. I will check out the the site you suggested. By the way, the tech rep at microstar couldn't find this answer, scary. Thanks, dcc

I am running windows ME, on a computer i think is a hp (label is gone) that we got from wal-mart in 1999. Now your prolly saying screw the RAM get a new computer. Enless I am wrong an RAM is cheaper. Anyways i know my way around the software yadda yadda on the comp, hardware i know very lil. I am not sure how much RAM i have, so i would like to know how to find out. I also want to upgrade it if it is below 1gig, (which it prolly is) question is, do i need to buy 1gig of RAM? or if i already have 512 RAM can i just buy another 512 to get my gig? And is there anything i may have left out here? like certian brand, kind or type? I know this question is a long one but i would appreciate any help offered. ty

Try going to Start, scroll up to Programs, go to Accessories, then System Info, click on System Summary. This should give you enough info to determine what's up. Happy hunting, dcc
