Hey Catweazle...this computer was given to me and is five years old, and it came without a modem or a CD burner. I was going to wait until I rebuilt it and in the process add a CD/DVD burner. :o

Are you looking for an argument of just slumming?
I just finished downloading Adobe 7.0, which also included their photo ablbum 2.0 much to my surprise. What I'm about to ask may be a dumb question, but this download took two and a half hours and I just want to make sure I don't do something that I'm going to regret. After I finished the installation I was left with four icons, two for each part, one part of each of these is for installing, is there any reason not to delete these?
What kind of motherboard were you thinking of using with the Athlon, and what kind of budget did you have in mind for it?
If price is no object I would have to think about the AMD Athlon 64x2 4800+, it is exspensive... but check out this link.
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20050603/
On a tighter budget? How about a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe nVidia mothrboard, and a AMD Athlon 64FX-53 proccessor for $899.99
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1267930&CatId=1619
I have been researching for a rebuild of my own, and I have to admit that I have become biassed towad AMD Athlon proccessors, and either Asus, or MIS motherboards. The MAD Athlon has consistantly been the bigger bang for the buck. I wasn't able to find a mobo combo with the AMD64 4400 proccessor in the short time that I had to look.
If I have my information correct, you're living in a city with a population of 40,000, and Perth is just up the road. With cities of this size you should have scads of computer shops to find a used PSU, just make sure you get a guarantee that it's not DOA before you buy it. If you can get one for free, so much the better. I still say to stay with at least a 250W PSU.
I wouldn't advise having that PSU floating around inside, but Thong Ispector has good point about testing the mobo, just make sure the PSU is well isolated form any other components.
First of all, let me appologize...your 12V rail has a max. load of 13A.
I would not go with anything smaller than what you had in there, which was a 250W PSU.
Hey Kiel...no you don't have to go with the same PSU, as a mater of fact, it looks like your 12v rail's max was 8A, that's kind of puny. As for manufacturers, I'm biassed toward Antec, you can count on getting what's advertised with them. Some manufacturers will rate a PSU as say 350W only to find that this is a peak power level, not RMS. If you stick with a major manufacturer you shouldn't have any of these problems. The link below may help you. Good luck

Yo Catweazle...I tried googling that a couple of different ways and didn't find anything that specific, if you have a specific link handy, may I please have it? Thanks
Yeah...but think nine foot flyrod and Tarpan, and the few extra miles start to seem worth while.
Thanks Catweazle...looks like I'm staying with Firefox.
Hey Zachery...I guess that I'm as biassed against IE as you're for it. Firefox is a little slower to get started, but is faster than IE once it is going, and has the security benefit of being a standalone browser. Thanks anyway.
After some recent problems with Firefox I'm now looking at other browsers, and it seems that Avant is getting a lot more downlods at Download.com than Firefox. The total downloads as of 06/19/05 are:
Avant 98,394
Firefox 66,894
Opera 17,141
Until I googled browsers I hadn't heard of Avant, but that was just the tip of the iceberg, check out the link below. Does anyone have any thing to say about Avant, good or bad?
Hey Kaiking...it looks like you have two memory slots with a total capacity of 1GB of RAM. The other information you need is that it is 184-pin PC2100 DDR-266 DIMM
As to how much more do you need, I would add another 512MB. If both slots are full, that would mean that you have 128MB in each, so if you were to pull one and replace it with a 512MB module, this would give you 640MB which should speed things up. If you go to the link below you will find a Kingston, and a Corsair 512MB module for about $47 including shipping. I would suggest that you stick with one of these, or of equal qaulity.
There is another link you might want to check out, this one provides some good basics about memory, but also has how to information for installing your new RAM.
Hey Thong Ispector...I hope you don't think that I was giving any credence to his "diagnosis", I was just pointing out that he couldn't even get the basics of Ohm's law right, you had it right...it was a short.
I can't see any reason not to, just monitor your temps.
You mean that's a myth?
I hope what you learned is that there are people here who are willing to point you in the right direction, if not give you the occasional baggin! By the way, what is a restard?
Hey Kiel...I have to admit that I had not read the second page before I made my fisrt reply, I missed suRoot's diatribe. I personally belive this forum is for helping others and learning, while we may occasionally make fun of one another, I don't condone the type of personal abuse you received from suRoot. Having said this, you have to admit, some of this was pretty funny. As for suRoot, he wrote V=i/r, it should read V=IxR.
Good luck Kiel, dcc
Too much, lmao!
Hey guys...I did download the Adobe reader 7.0 and hope this solves some of the problems.
KcOarf, yes I had tried mutiple times without success. I know of at least five readers from another site that had no poblems with the download.
Thong Ispector, I don't know enough about "MIME" other than supporting multi-internet functions, I will have to read some more about it. I was given a link from another site that provides some interesting information about Firefox, check it out.
No problem...actually, I sent you a pm stating that if it wasn't harmful that I could live with it, and that it wasn't worth spending your time on it.
As far as the LAN connection on the motherboard, I'm not following your inference, but being a novice when it comes to computers, it doesn't take much to leave me in dust.
Thanks Catweazle...looks like l will be doing another download on the snailophone line. Operating on the premise that there are no dumb questions, is there any reason to keep the 6.0 version after I download the 7.0?
Catweazle...I solved the problem.
Control Panel
Network and Dial-up connection
Disabled Local Area Connection
No more popup, and no complications!
Hey guys...thanks for the response.
Yes I do have Java enabled.
I will try allowing popups in the exceptional case.
I have Adobe 6.0, wasn't even aware that a 7.0 was out!
In the Outlook Express, the pricacy level can be adjusted to accept or block cookies, with the OE being part of the integral system, does this mean that it controls the privacy levels when using othe browsers?
Purely as a point of curiostiy, what browser are you using?
Maybe a failure... but not a short. When to potentials (+ and - volatges) make accidetal contact, that's a short. By the way, what happened when you unpluged the unit?
I recently switched to Firefox as my browser and like it very much, but I'm having problems downloading from some sites. I had tried on several occasions to download an owners manual from the Samsung USA site only to have it stall every time. I went back to OE and had no problem with the download. If I understand this correctly, there are going to be some sites where i'm going to need "plug ins", are these provided at the site, or is there a download for them as well?
Unplug it for about two minutes and see what happens.
Thanks Dogtree, ain't it the truth! I did the ping and trace test out of Run, no problems, I think it's fair to say it's the ISP. Unfortunately, this is a small company that closes its doors and turns on the answering machine at midnight. They have been great for tech support, well informed and willing to help out, and I don't think the company has anymore than ten employees. I started out with my first computer this last November, so that has been helpful for me. Thanks again, dcc
Hi Dogtree...that's what I figured, my ISP is telling me that it wasn't their fault and that I should go to start, then run and do a trace rt. I'm thinking new ISP if I have to go start.
Thanks, dcc
I was browsing ebay last night, and at one point I found that I couldn't do anything without getting the response that I had timed out. After closing Firefox, I tried to check my mail and received an error message telling me that I was unable to connect to the server, I then went off line and tried to reconnect but was unable to. I gave it a fifteen minute break and tried to connect with my ISP once again, and this time was able to. Would these problems be symptomantic of my ISPs server being down, or is there something else that I should be looking at?
My OS is windows 2000 Pro, and I use Firefox for my browser, and OE for my mail.
I do appreciate your time, dcc
Thanks Belama...I appreciate the link and the advise, I'll have to put some thought into modifying my case.
Kosmoe...I have similar feelings for anyone who would take the time to rebuild a Rochester, and understanding the amount off compressed air needed to blow one out after boiling it out, I can understand how a small can of air doesn't go very far by comparison.
Thanks for the advice and entertainment, dcc
Actually, I did that first, and was told to disable my AVG av, I couldn't see doing this and go on line unprotected so I went on in search of an other answer, as it turns out they were referring to the email scan portion of the AVG. I disabled it and so far every thing is working fine, but then again every thing that was going wrong last night disappeared this morning before I did anything! I'm still leaning towards an exorcisim.
Actually, using PVC fittings I made a reducer that will take a 5/8" ( 1/2"ISD) tube, and the other end slips on the vacume like any other attachment, works fine for short durations, it's hard on the motor. You mentioned using filters on your computer, are there systems available that can be modified to meet different case needs? Do these filter systems impede the air flow?
I've been having some problems with my Outlook Express, it started with receiving mail, but now I can't send mail. Every time I try to send an email I get the following message:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'omited@cwnet.com'. Subject 'omited', Account: 'mail.cwnet.com', Server: 'mail.cwnet.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relay not permitted', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
(The omitons are mine in the above text). This happens with any address now. Can someone please help me with this? I can get around this by using Thunderbird, but it sure would be nice to figure out what in blazes is happening to the OE. Thanks...dcc
Thanks for the response guys. I 'll forgo the brush, but you made me think of something that I had not before, I have a fan on my CPU, do I really need to dismantle this to clean it, or can I get away with vacuming it out?
Hi guys...it's time to do a little spring cleaning to the insides of my computer, and my question is about using presurized air to blow off the boards. A friend of mine who worked building PCBs for a major corp. tells me that I run the risk of creating static electricity by using presurized air to blow off the boards, and if I'm going to do it , that I should use ionized air. When I tell him that I'm not only going to use presurized air, but will also use a natural bristol brush to help, he looks at me like I've lost my senses. Is he paranoid, or should I rethink this?
Ok...I called my ISP tech, and he walked me through setting up my account again...this makes three times in the past five months...I received the test mail he sent, and there were no error messages. I haven't made any changes to the settings in the Outlook Express, so how's this happening? Is this a problem with my ISP, or do I have some weird sortware problem, or what? I would greatly appreciate any help with this.
I recently switched to AVG as my av, and shortly after started having poblems receiving email. Once in a while when I went to check my mail, the AVG email scan would pop up, and after scanning the mail it would indicate that I had an item followed by the usual mail annoucement tone, but I would find nothing in the inbox. I checked to see if the av had absconded it, but the virus valt was empty. Today when I went to check my mail it did the same thing, except this time it was followed by an error message with error: 0X800420CD, not having time to fool with it at the time I tried again later, and this time I immediately got the following message.
Unable to logon to the server using Secure Password Authentication. Account: 'mail.cwnet.com', Server: 'mail.cwnet.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Unknown command "AUTH"', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC18
I had wanted to try Thundrbird anyway, so I downloaded it to see if it would solve my problem, it didn't have the error message, but initially it would show that I had one unread message in the scan, but it would show no unread messages after that. I went to my ISP to make sure that there were messages being sent, and was able to read the messges there. I next tried sending a message to myself only to have the same results.
…
I recently switched from Panda av to AVG, and when I go to Outlook Express for to check my email, the AVG pop up in the corner shows that it's scanning my mail. If I have mail it shows the number of items and I get the usual tone indicating that I have mail. Every now and again it shows that there is an item and I get the tone, but there is no mail. I've checked to see if the av has held it, but find nothing, this has happened five or six times now, and I'm just curious about what's going on here. Is this something that is particular of AVG, or what? Nothing shows up when scan with spyware, spybot, spywared doctor, is it just a set of hidden settings? ( sorry, if you go to the following link and click on humor and scroll down to Microsoft bashing, you will find the hidden settings) http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/6271/
Is this just a glitch that happens, or should I be looking for something?
I don't know where you live, so I don't know about prices and availability in you location, but usually I would say it's cheaper to buy new memory, opposed to buying a new computer, I'm guessing that this was your last question. If you go to the link below you will find the page has Memory Search in the upper left corner, it that box you will find three choices just to the right of the "find" button, click on Memory Type. This page has the Memory Configurator, in the box below scroll down untill you see DDR PC2100 and click on it and then click on find. This page reads Search Results, in the box below click on 184-pin DIMM, and then find. Now you have a list of 266MHz DDR PC2100 CL2 DIMM modules, stay with the nonECC and you should be good to go. http://www.kingston.com/
Realizing that all people are not created equal, it's obvious that there are going to be individuals who have problems reading and asimilating technical information, but if you don't fall into this catagory, and can follow written instructions, perhaps building your own rig is a good choice. If you reaserch your compents for compatibility, and their specific applications, this will reduce the possibility of any potential problems. If you do build your own, the suggestion to stay away form generic hardware is sage advice.
Your motherboard is a Jetway P4MFU533
Your motherboard has two memory slots, and a capacity of 2GB.
The type of memory you have is PC2100 DDR SDRAM.
If you go to most any major memory manufacturer like Kingston or Cosair, and use this information, they will be able to provide you with a compatible module for you board.
It would help to know the make and model/and or your motherboard, but this link should provide you with a place to start.
The site that I suggested does address that aspect of compatibility also, but once you decide on the manufacturer, go to their home site, they normally list several ways to communicate with them, look for a toll free phone number. They usually have good tech support, and from my experience they have been more than willing to make sure you get the proper module(s).
If you go to this site, scroll down the left side, and you will find instalation instructions. This site also address other compatibility issues.
Will one of these http://www.atruereview.com/arcticcooler/index.php
fit a 9800 SE ?
Ok...I'll bite, what is a 9800 SE?
