i have a usb x-fi soundblaster, it was awesome, caused new vegas to crash so i took it out, and lost a great software for taking advantage of an awesome 5.1 sur sound...but someone proposed that i should look for a generic driver or software to run the creative labs external card, it was their software not the hardware that made the problem...i ended up at a website where programmers modify manufacturer's software and repost it for other people, it all seemed like i could be on to an awesome solution...or bigger problems? experiences? recommendations?....other than buy a new sound card ;) but i am almost ready to pass it on down to my dear ol' deaf dad but...its a kick ass card/software suite

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

by any chance did the files there get compressed for storage?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

This man...is genius...damn it. my friggin loyalty to that damn thing totally blinded me. I'll give it credit, the x-fi runs the surround sound awesome and software for fine tuning the music is really kick ass, but i only play with that like once a month for 15 minutes, then its back to games and uhhh...films that are exploratory into the human uhhh...subconsious? either way, THANKS A LOT! great idea but i do have a couple quick questions because i'm hoping you have some experience and recomendations for me here...i have a nice subwoffer, 5.1, amp, etc setup i actually won at work for performance, and i do like to play around with all the settings from time to time, in the future i'll build my own computer again but this time, if you were in my shoes would you a) get a pci? any advantages? b) when you go up from the $60 bucks i spent on this sound card, how much better can it really get?
one of the reasons it never occurred to me to use the build in sound card was that i always assumed it was like built in AC Delco stereos that used to come with GM autos.
any big advantages to using the built in one other than it can't fall out, it was probably cheap and it'll always be there?
funny thing is that both of them have always been 'enabled' and working at the same time and no …

I'll prob post this thread in a couple places because of all the things it is and what its capable of...anything for help right? anyhow, here is my problem. I finally got Fallout: New Vegas, works fine but not for long, as soon as i go to start a game, hit new, it starts to load it and goes to BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!! yes, haven't had that damn thing in forever. apparently this has been a problem. a file going by the name of ksaudfl.sys, has been one of the instigators in this and there is Paging in a Non-Paged Area, and we all agree that we just can't have that.

here is what i have hardware/software: Intel E8400 Core 2 Duo, 3.0Ghz, Windows XP 64-bit, 8GB RAM, Diamond Multimedia 1GB DDR2 card HD 4650, Soundblaster Pro X-fi 5.1 external(usb) surround sound. To date nothing has really challenged my hardware such that its bogging down and i'm irritated. it is all very well cooled. i have removed and re-installed every driver package i could get my hand on the for sound card. It wasn't very many, like 3 differnt versions since it came out. So far the only success i've had in actually getting to play the game was disabling the x-fi, and telling it i was using headphones. my motherboard, a asus p5q-e has a Realtek HD sound something in it also i just remembered....anyhow what the hell is going on? my sound card has never been …

i've got win xp 64bit and i've had no troubles but recently the activex that runs when you go to the ms update site disappeared. it used to work or be there. how could this have happened? and how can i fix it? i'm not sure if this is related but my system restore functions have disappeared off the menu too, i did install pc doc pro 5, since removed, and advanced sys care pro, did these take away that option from the menu? how can i get that back?

query: how much could i speed up my system if i partitioned the 500gb hard drive into two or three segments? worth it?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

yeah it is, i just sounded so forbidding i wanted to find out what it was and if it has any purpose at all.l

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

the casual user you speak of couldn't pass up a good deal and then decided to just make them all match to avoid problems. i was hoping the overkill would give me lightning fast bootups and shut downs along with the usual but that hasn't happened. it runs every program great and fast so i shouldn't complain. i don't know why it boots up slow i've cleared the start up list, i have no idea why it shuts down sooooo slow. i guess i'll leave the RAM settings alone unless you think the timing should be adjusted to the 5,5,5,15.

wait sorry, that last post is data from pc wizard 2009, a program by the same company. the cpuz data is the data in the first posting. the processor i have overclocks well from what i've read but i don't know if that would speed up everything either. maybe i have too much RAM, is 8GB a hinderance and not a help? should i buy 4x1 in a faster MHz for better performance?

i don't think this board is ddr3 compatible so i'm putting off buying a new one for a bit. hence my interest in overclocking my 800mhz, which aren't running near 800mhz. its at 1.8volts right now, but those numbers aren't the timing its at but timings i could use at different mhz?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

i've got 4x2GB Kingston 800MHz mems, and i'd like to kick them up a notch from what they're currently running at, 1066 possible? CUPID says they're running at the following:
DRAM 400mhz, command rate 2T, fsb:ram 5:6, with the timing at 6,6,6,18, 52 for latencies and delays. i'm using an asus p5qe, pentium dual core 3.0, 500gb hd, WIN XP 64bit.

long and the short of it? where or how do i determine the the latencies without jacking up the timing and given EXCELLENT cooling, but not water, is 1066 okay with these boards?

any help, hints, pointers, clues are greatly appreciated. thanks, and yes, i'm ordering faster ddr2 now and for valentine's day i'm selling and going ddr3

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

in the BIOS setup, given this: i have 8gb ram, asus p5qe, 500gb hd, 3.0 pentium dual core, do i leave the memory hole enabled and the remapping on? or are there advantages to changing any of that?

i have win xp 64bit edition and i'm trying to flush the dns manually and i'm getting the error message:

just so i could use all the RAM i bought i upgraded to win xp 64bit about six months ago and i haven't used IE 64 bit or tried to until about two weeks ago? whats the difference between the two and is it worth them writing code for it? why can't it be my default browser? should i go back to not even knowing its there?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

thanks alot for both links, i'm gonna work with both

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

i did some scratching around and i guess it hasn't been fixed yet. someone wrote up a description of how to fix it and then further down the page, posted a link to his file, where he has fixed it. i tried doing it the way he describes and in the and i thought it looked like the line he was referring to has been fixed in the most recent version. either way i did what he said and it still was giving me the same message about not having win xp 64 bit. so i just downloaded his version and installed it. here is the page he devoted to this problem

http://skunkwerks.wordpress.com/2008/04/13/getting-itunes-to-work-with-windows-xp-x64/

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

thanks but yeah, i've tried that. i've tried a couple approaches and neither have worked. i've always uninstalled completely inbetween installations and i have no existing copy of this program on my computer, anyway, my two approaches:

1 win xp 32-bit edition: it tells me i'd be better off with the win xp 64 bit edition but it does let me continue for a while before it bugs out and says there was an error and nothing was changed on my system.

2 win xp 64 bit edidtion: it tells me i need win xp 64 edition to install this version.

i suppose fixing that last error could make way for the program to properly install. but i don't know where itunes is getting the idea i don't have win xp 64

i'm hoping there is someone out there with win xp 64 BIT VERSION who had to overcome some problems to get iTUNES on their compter. two things to note. i downloaded it and it told me it needs a 64 bit version of win xp. that's what i'm on, but i'm on the student teacher version. then another time it just froze up installing. i tried installing the 32 bit verions but there were problems there. HELP, i haven't found anything on there page yert. thanks a bunch
chris

I've been getting update errors now for a while and i can't seem to fix it with my copy of the software. Every time I go to the page to scan for updates, I click on it and it comes back with this message:
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

So i've been working on it for a bit. I have WIN XP 64x by the way. I've done many of the solutions I've been coming across when i do a search on google, i've even completely formatted and reinstalled the program, which is new, and the student version by the way. Nothing has worked yet. Unfortunately, these updates which were all something we could go without anyway, seem to be getting more important. Anyhow, anything would help as this point, so many thanks in adance.

when i was experimenting with the last computer i had, some combinations of RAM chips adding to 4MB or more slowed the windows xp. have you checked in your settings the size of your paging file? or the virtual memories settings and that you hadnt some of the other option activated. how often is it setting restore points and have you emptied that file? sorry man just throwing out some of the million things i've run into. you didn't set the hard drive to run quietly or anything correct?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

yeah, before i decided to overclock it i had read in several locations that this particular CPU could get overclocked to 3.6 without really having to do anything special, that was going to be my humble goal, seeing as it would be my first time, i thought i would risk little. after a few tries and a forgiving asus motherboard, which simply didn't work and told you it was going to default because you did it wrong, i got it overclocked. i noticed the different, unforunately it jacked up some programs and i reversed it. but i do appreciate everyone's input and their wise advise, i've avoided doing such a thing for years, this just happened to seem finally safe. positive rep points for all. have a good weekend. case closed

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

i'm going to overclock my Intel Core Duo 3.0, apparently you can get it to 3.6 without breaking a sweat. i already have five fans running and its well ventilated but i need some settings for the BIOS, the motherboard is a ASUS P5Q-E, i'm running windows XP Pro, SP3, 3MB RAM, evidently any more is useless so i now have all the slots and all the cards for 8MB RAM but i can't use it. But i would like some parameters for the bios cpu settings. any suggestions would be awesome, thanks

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

i've been meaning to turn off the hibernating function...how can i do that? as far as the ramdisk and loading oft used files, i'm not familiar with the process, but i'm intrigued, would you mind telling a little more? as far as why i would care about the memory thing it would just be a disappointment....especially considering i already bought the memory like an idiot. my old motherboard, which isn't that old, responded to every additional bit of RAM i put in it, but that could be just because i went from 1GB to 2GB and then to 4GB and at those ranges the amounts are significant

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

i just got a new top of the line asus motherboad, okay not top of the line but pretty close, anyhow, i still have win xp pro, and the asus instructions said that 3MB or less was optimal RAM size. DAMN!!! I have 4 slots for dual channel memory and i have pletty of 2gb chips, does any excess RAM cause it to slow down or can i still glean some RAM over 3GB with larger chips?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

thanks, yeah, i did have to go in and make the adjustment in the registry, i guess it is not uncommon for win xp to not recognize the L2 cache in your processor. Your help is most appreciated and as always i'll make sure i add to your rep, in a good way of course. thanks

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

what's the trick to making sure you utilize all your RAM and your L2 cache, are there settings or parameters i need to set to allow for that?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

thanks alot

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

okay, so 70G for the OS/logical partition, and then take a piece for what i'll need and leave some behind for later?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

are the processors in my USB network adapter card useful at all? do they help out the CPU in any way or not really?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

I'm formatting and setting up the partitions in a 500GB harddrive. Its not really going to be partitioned but I believe I need to leave a certain amount for the logical part of the harddrive? what sizes are best to use in this case? i'll be running windows xp pro on it.

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

fear not, they are gone. i was just asking a follow up question so i could learn a little more, ya know, something i could apply to any future problems.

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

thanks alot, appreciate the help. out of curiousity how does that allow me to delete them?

any personal experience with this sort of situation? i'm leaning, unless i read otherwise with taking the two 1gbs and leaving a 2gb in the other machine. thanks alot for the help by the way. one last question? should the thermal gel be easy to see, or just know its there?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

can someone just give me a quick overview on the defragmenting freespace? in defraggler there is an option to leave fragmentation in free space? what does that mean, the fragmented files you leave behind will just be written over

okay, so my new motherboard has 4 slots. I have both 2GB and 1GB chips, 3 2GB and 1GB to use up. Will it matter which slots they go in?

Actually, I believe I'm looking at dual channel, two slots. Given that, Can I leave one channel empty and have that cause less problems than one channel be 1GB and the other 2GB

I will be keeping a steady eye on the temp but i won't get a temp gauge. I live in Arizona and its summer, sorry for stating the obvious and you HAVE to keep air moving around these babies or, under gaming and certain circumstances you will fry 'em. IF you overclocked it, which i won't do. BUT, i do belive that no overclocking it and letting it run hot, dooms you to an earlier replacement. I think if you work the hell out of em in a hot room, its performance goes down faster and it hits the curb sooner

I had no idea they called this glorified vasoline thermal compound....hmmm, i wonder if it a C5 or C6, anyway..i thought here or in another post i picked up that the thermal compounds couold have serious differences, brand to brand, in their ablity to conduct heat. Are there any brands to avoid for sure, and any you're almost always safe with? other than artic fox? like the one i'm holding right now, about to put on my CPU...dynex? is it bad?

Hi, I just replaced my 2.4 Ghz Intel Celeron CPU with a P4 Prescott at 3.2 ghz like 2 hours ago. It idles at like 48 degrees Celsius. I played half-life 2 for a bit and it went up to like 60-62. I didn't put any thermal crap on it. I have a new fan that says it supports up to 3.6 Ghz. Is this normal for my CPU, or if not what should I do?

The fan is a Thermaltake TR-M12 for socket 478

thanks a lot for the help. i'll do all that and cross my fingers. two follow up questions? in doing research i've heard the following may help and are they true? any of them independently that is : 1) disable hyperthreading in bios 2) turning off the graphics accelerator in windows. on a separate note is the video controller in my system something that the graphics card takes over? should i disable it, uninstall it or just leave it be and keep the drivers in it up to date?

cbusen 36 Junior Poster in Training

I'm having a bear of a time installing the Sparkle graphics 9400gt pci in my PCI slot, i have no pcie slot( :( bigtime ). If i've read everything correctly, i need to uninstall everything existing, video drivers, video adapters, and all the related items and so on...and then install all the software. is that correct? keeping in mind i have an integrated video card and the computer will use that unless it detects something in the pci slot. do i need to uninstall the intel video controllers also? i'm really hoping that i did it wrong before and it isn't as slow as it tested out to be. any help or advice would be most appreciated. thanks. ps i've had no luck running fallout 3 and someother much less demanding games like civilization 4.

again thanks for anything
