I use FaceBook myself as there are a number of online communities whose members I know well which have set up groups there. Also, the simplicity of the interface is great, very well suited to purpose.

However, it is not something I am driven to visit every hour or even every day. Unlike certain other online communities such as DaniWeb or Cix (UK text based conferencing system of some 20 years standing, very similar to The Well in many regards) which have a much more compelling sense of belonging and interaction IMHO.

Depends almost entirely upon the company doing the hiring. Some might not give you a chance because of the personal beliefs of the boss/board or the nature of the business they are in, others might adopt a take as they find approach, others might be impressed by the drive of a candidate who has turned his life around and wants to make something of it...

Moderator positions are, indeed, given out on a combination basis of need and experience. First we identify a need, then we find someone with the right balance of enthusiasm and experience to best fulfil the position.

We do not ask people to volunteer to become moderators, we will approach them if and when the time is right.

With regard to the fact that we lost a handful of people some months back, that does not actually mean that we are desperate to find people to replace them. The existing moderator team is doing a splendid job, and where additional help is identified as being required then we will identify the right people to contact about stepping up...

OK, first things first: the only 100% secure computer is one that you never switch on and use. That doesn't mean you cannot aim for 99.9% though :)

Most up to date Internet security suites and anti-virus solutions do now include rootkit scanning in some form or other. All you really need to know about a rootkit, if you don't want to get lost in the technicality, is that one can be used to hide malicious software from the OS.

Getting someone's IP address is very easy indeed. Whether you want to keep yours secret at all costs depends upon how paranoid you are.

There are better firewalls out there than ZoneAlarm Free, for sure, but everyone will recommend something different. The truth of the matter is that provided you have the basic protection in place, and an Internet secuirty suite is good enough (I am Contributing Editor of PC Pro magazine in the UK, and our current recommended security suite is Norton 360 which performed well in our tests - I use it here on one of my Vista machines and have no problems with it), then good security boils down to what you do with your computer.

If you practise safe hex, do not link click on anything that arrives unsolicited in email, do not download dodgy free software, do not install porn movie viewers, do not fall for the too good to be true scams that plague the Internet, then you should stay …
