Thunderbird PST Import plugin is a open source utility to import selected folders from a .pst file under both Windows and Linux. This just might be the thing you'd be looking for.

Heard of "rugged machines" like the ones they use in the US forces. That's something you would be looking for (I mean a hard drive of that sort) so that even if it falls, it's just ready for a fight back. Do you copy , soldier ?

You need administrator rights. You can try doing it on safe mode as you will easily get admin rights then.

Purchasing a new one is the best option as everyone here claims. But just in case you still love your old one and want to stay with it , you better try boot time hard drive partition tools.
