Today, the Entertainment Software Association released findings from two studies by Dr. Christopher Ferguson of Texas A&M University. In an interesting twist, Dr. Ferguson's findings suggest that not only are violent video games okay to give to children, they may actually be beneficial. Video games are often blamed for violent outbursts, as are movies, television and Catcher in the Rye. I lived in the same neighborhood as Columbine High School when the massacre took place. This particular tragedy was the first time I had heard video games being blamed for someone's behavior. Harris and Klebold reportedly liked playing Doom - …

Nintendo is sitting firmly at the top of the games console tree right now, having just been 'bigged up' by the release of the US sales figures for October which show the Wii on 803,000 and the DS on 491,000. Both well ahead of nearest rival, the Xbox 360 on 371,000. The old, original, Xbox quite unsurprisingly does not feature in the top six list. That said, the PlayStation 2 does, at the bottom, on 136,000. So why mention the Xbox at all then? Simply because the Xbox 360 has yet to manage to sell more units than the original …

First there was a year of hype surrounding Project Natal, but the reality that is Microsoft Kinect has been in my family home for a week now. Everyone from my 10 year old daughter to my retired mother-in-law have played with it, so what's the verdict? Is this the future of motion control gaming or just a flawed imitation of the Nintendo Wii? Let's start at the beginning with what Kinect is not: it's most certainly not a Wii, nor a PlayStation Move for that matter, as it takes a quite different and truly unique approach to the whole motion …

NVIDIA's CUDA parallel computer architecture is picking up steam and quickly becoming one of the de-facto solution for producing high-end video content. When time is money, companies such as Industrial Light & Magic, and Adobe, cannot always cram every feature or pixel into the finished product. Most consumers might not realize that production technology is a major player in the race for quality, but NVIDIA's Quadro and Tesla product lines, coupled with the CUDA architecture, will determine the future of video as we know it. Jon Peddie Research is a leading research firm for the multimedia industry and Mr. Peddie …

Hi, I am looking for the worlds most realistic open world racing game. My definition of realism is: 1: when youre going 200 miles an hour, and when you crash into a wall youre car is all smashed (need for speed has a huge problem with that). 2: Realistic driving physics, if you floor the throttle in the game, the car slides around and just doesnt start accelerating really fast. 3: Other stuff, youre car has a limited amount of gas, if you pop or loose a tire you can continue driving, and if you drive off of a cliff …

It's taken a while, but computing has finally gotten the green message. Many of the biggest IT vendors now ensure that they are being environmentally friendly in terms of the recyclablity of both components and packaging of the products they sell. But are you doing your bit once you get that kit home and plug it in? Perhaps more to the point, as well as wasting precious energy are you paying more than you need to when it comes to powering your tech? The chances are that, like most of us, you could do more to help the environment …

You might think that there's not much further for a high-end low budget home entertainment remote control unit to go than the One For All SmartControl that DaniWeb reviewed just over a year ago now. However, One For All does not seem to agree as it has just launched the SmartControl Motion in the UK in time for Xmas, complete with the iPhone inspired gesture controls which provide the difference as well as the 'motion' in the name of the device. Although the SmartControl Motion we have been playing with did not come with the Sony PS3 adapter that allowed …

I just built an HTPC using the Asus AT3IONT-I motherboard which has onboard CPU and GPU. The board is supposed to be HDMI ready, but I am getting no sound through HDMI to my TV. I know the HDMI cable and my TV settings are fine, because I can get sound using my laptop perfectly fine. All drivers are up to date, and I even flashed the BIOS. I have been into the audio settings in control panel and HDMI is set to default. When I run 'test' in audio device applet, the green bar moves up and down, which …

USING THE ACER ASPIRE 1410 LAPTOP AS AN HD MEDIA CENTER PC: A STEP-BY-STEP ILLUSTRATED TUTORIAL This tutorial is not intended to be a full review of the Acer Aspire 1410 ultraportable laptop PC. It assumes that you already familiar with the machine and are looking to learn how to exploit its full capabilities for use as an HD media center PC in your home theater. Keep in mind that the Aspire 1410 isn't the only laptop than can be used as a media center PC. While I feel the Aspire is the best choice for this purpose, the information …

My cousin wants me to repair her original fat XBox 360. It will play DVDs fine, but when trying to load a game just completely locks up. I've determined that the disk drive is failing, and that it is a Philips Lite-On DG-16D2S. I have an old busted 360 and, before researching, just tried swapping the drives; needless to say this didn't work. I've been reading up and found that there are 2 ways to replace a disc drive, getting the exact same model and replacing the new drive's circuit board with the old drive's, and by getting the Drive …

I recently bought a 3DTV (today, in fact. Just waiting for it to arrive early next week) and the only thing I need is an HDMI cable which can carry a 3D signal since my current one is only v1.3 which I believe cannot carry a 3D signal. I know that in terms of picture quality, there is little to no difference between the top of the range and bottom of the range so the main thing I'm looking for is the durability. The reason why I didn't buy an HDMI cable with the TV is because the cheapest one …

I and many others have found that when converting to and converting from FLAC format from/to WAV format there is a sound quality degradation even though file size remains the same and accurate rip comparisons in EAC show no differences. Performing these conversions on two different PC computers of differing OS (Windows 7 64 bit vs Vista 32 bit), differing RAM (4 vs 8 GB), and differing CPU's (2.66 GHz quad-core vs 3 GHz duo-core) indicated that the effect was present in both systems but smaller in the better computer, thus indicating processing power was one source of the problem. …
