Don't really hear much about PPC as much as email marketing. You may or may not take this as an indication of success, but the most popular strategy isn't always the best and most effective.

Just remember that Facebook is a social network. You should do your promotion in a social way e.g. engaging with people and building relationships, plus you yourself should be interested with what your page has. Don't spam also.

What have you been trying? It's possible that you're either trying the wrong methods or simply implementing the right strategy in a wrong way. If you can give more information people would be able to suggest a better strategy or plan of action for you.

Social media is a good way to advertise software and other products. You just have to generate enough buzz in order to get people talking about your product, either by giving them a sample or a "taste" of your product or through any other way that would picque interest.

SEO most probably, if only because it is one of the better choices when you are looking at long term benefits. There isn't relaly one option that's the best for everybody, though.

It's probably not a good idea calling people here IT geeks, I'm thinking. You do post some thought-provoking questions, though, and it would be interesting to see how people would answer them.

An interesting look into social media and its applications in marketing. Not sure if I agree on all of the concepts being discussed, but it's good to see things in a different perspective.
