Short diagnosis and quick checks: that exact message means vanBasco tried to open a MIDI output slot that Windows no longer reports (a device was removed, the driver changed, or the MIDI/Mixer mapping got corrupted). First things to try: close vanBasco, reboot Windows, power-cycle or replug any USB-MIDI devices, then re-open the player. These simple refreshes fix many "out of range" errors. (wiki.musink.net)

Change the output inside vanBasco next: open Setup (Alt+S or right‑click -> Setup), go to the MIDI section and pick a different Output Device (Microsoft GS Wavetable or any other listed synth). Installing a modern software synth such as CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth and selecting it as the output often resolves the mismatch and improves sound (load a GM SoundFont first). If vanBasco shows a device that no longer exists, pick another one or the newly installed VirtualMIDISynth. (midiprog.com)

If that fails, run a MIDI diagnostic and clean up stale drivers: use a MIDI utility (MIDI‑OX) to list active MIDI ports and test routing; check Device Manager under Sound/Video/Game Controllers; and (only if comfortable and after a registry backup) inspect HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32 for duplicate or obsolete midi* entries and remove them. Reinstall or update your soundcard/MIDI drivers if entries look wrong. These steps remove ghosted device IDs that trigger the error. (support.m-audio.com)

Notes on reinstalling and downloads: is right that reinstalling the player can fix missing DLLs, but avoid untrusted sites — vanBasco’s official site has been unreliable in recent years. Prefer reputable archives (Softpedia or Internet Archive) and scan any installer before running it. If troubleshooting steps above still fail, try a different MIDI/KAR player to confirm whether the issue is system-wide or vanBasco-specific. For : MIDI/KAR files are widely available from MIDI libraries and archives; prefer well‑known repositories and verify file formats (.mid/.kar) before use. (coolsoft.altervista.org)

I have been trying to find out what happened to the VanBasco site and as I found no information on the net, I got very involved as to finding the history of VanBasco - who started it and when and only found out that the possible founder and creator was David Brady. Nothing on him on the net, the site and download ability at that site, the midi search availability is gone - very mysterious asa no one knows anything. I cannot solve your problem, but would recommend that you download another 2.52 exe. or 2.53 edition ( which I found with difficulty as most sites are attached to ) and I downloaded them for further needs if I have them. I still search for info and again only found this site today.

Anything that you may know would be appreciated. I can send you the 2.52 exe or the 2.53 exe if you want them - if you use them, do not uninstall what you have as certain files will be erased - just execute over.
