Quick update and context (years after the thread): StumbleUpon no longer operates — its service was discontinued and users were encouraged to move to Mix — so the old “toolbar” workflow mentioned by is obsolete (StumbleUpon history). Reddit remains a viable source of targeted traffic, but success depends on community fit and presentation more than sheer volume of submissions.

Before submitting: make the landing page you plan to share ready for social traffic. That means a clear, single-purpose URL (don’t submit the generic homepage unless it’s the best entry), fast load time, mobile-friendly layout, and good social preview metadata so the link displays cleanly on Reddit, Mix and other aggregators. Include Open Graph and Twitter Card tags and a large share image (1200x630px recommended). Example meta tags:

<meta property="og:title" content="Strong article title" />
<meta property="og:description" content="Short, benefit-focused summary" />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://yourdomain.com/images/share.jpg" />
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />

On where and how to post: pick the most relevant subreddit or Mix collection, read that community’s rules carefully (some subreddits ban promotional links), and craft the submission title to match reader intent. As said, value is everything — helpful, specific content gets votes and comments. Track referral performance with UTM tags such as ?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=bookmark so you can see real impact in Analytics.

Troubleshooting and best practices: if a post is removed, check the moderator message or automoderator logs and adjust (different subreddit, add context, or choose a non-link post format). Avoid reposting the same link repeatedly or buying votes — that risks bans. Build a small, genuine activity history before heavy promotion. For platform rules and submission help see Reddit’s official help pages (Reddit Help) and for social metadata details see platform sharing docs (Facebook Sharing Best Practices).

In reddit.com on the right hand side you will find a link "Submit a link" using that you can sumbit your links. In StumbleUpon.com the easiest way to submit is register and download their tool bar. Open any link in the browser and just click the stumbleupon icon it will automatically be submitted. You can also try this site http://www.makemylink.com and submit your favorite links.

Nope, just go ahead and do it. I do that always, nearly daily.

Also make sure the site you recommend/add to the social bookmarking site provides value to the visitors so the site can get voted and it will receive higher visibility and ultimately, visitors and higher conversion rate!
