I honestly think the sitemap ( in the case of dealing with Google ) is just another tool that they ( Google ) have put out there to drive people mad... There No1 in the world and it takes months for your site to get Indexed.. Then as said above " They dangle the carrot" with sitemaps..

Sitemap is for a website like an index is for a book. Is usually in XML and helps the crawlers to fully crawl your website. And each search engine has it's own sitemap requirement like google wants your sitemap to be in XML and named as 'sitemap.xml' whereas yahoo wants it to be plain text and should be named 'urllist.txt'
