reported the “System Error” when switching verification to SMS. Echoing and , transient outages do happen, but the verification flow has changed since the old Places era: Google now automatically chooses which methods are available for each profile (video recording, live video call, phone/SMS, email, or mail) and you can’t force a particular method. For the official overview, see Google’s verification guidance. ()

Practical checklist to try next (do these in order):

  • Sign in with the Google account that already owns or manages the profile. If you’re acting for the owner, ask them to add you as an owner/manager via People & access before trying to verify. ()
  • Confirm the business phone is a direct line that can receive calls/SMS (IVR systems won’t receive codes). ()
  • Double-check the address: include suite/unit or set the map pin if there’s no street number; use the exact postal format used by the carrier. ()
  • If you request a postcard, wait (most codes arrive within 14 days), do not request another code or edit name/address/category while waiting, and enter the 5-digit code within 30 days. ()
  • If the UI shows “System Error,” try a different browser or device, an incognito window, or the Business Profile mobile app — errors often stem from session/account problems.

If problems persist (no verification options, repeated system errors): use the Help → Contact us flow in Google Business Profile to open a support case and ask for escalation or live/video verification. Prepare photos/signage and proof-of-management (or be ready to capture the required video) before the call. ()

Quick cautions: never share your verification code (Google won’t ask for it) and avoid repeated postcard reorders — those can prolong verification. If you still get blocked after doing the above, open a support case and attach screenshots and the steps you’ve already tried. ()

There's no way for you to change the verification method? Has the address of the business changed from the one previously set by the owner? The same phone number?

The fact that it is a System Error leads me to believe the problem is on their end, not yours. Have you been just trying tonight or over a period of a day or so.

I hate this about Google ... All their products are self serve and their customer support is terrible, and it's even worse to get in touch with anybody.

Please take some penitence, don’t does a regular submission. About address, verification is a lengthy process, sometime due to improper address the pin not dispatches a particular destination. I suggest you that wait for today and try SMS or Phone call verification option later.

Around the period this thread was posted there was a major problem on Google Places related to the verification process. It was fixed a few days later.

However, if anyone keeps having problems with the verification and does not receive the postcard, here is the official troubleshooter you could use to notify Google about the problem:

I hope sometime it will take time. You can check the Google ad words guide may be it will help you.

Hi,
Even I heard that, there are some changes done in the Google places. Try it now and see if you are getting access or not.
