I have a Presario X1050, the laptop just froze on me all of a sudden, the screen went a little weird on me with waves going from one side to the other of the screen. I shut it down imm. but then it never started again. Now when I turn it on, the power light comes up, I hear the hard disk running for a second or two then everything comes to a still. Tried removing the battery and reattaching it ..didn't worked.

I would really appreciate any advice from you guys.

Thank you.

Good description, . The freeze plus wavy video, then a brief HDD spin and silence, points to an early POST failure on the mainboard. In this generation, that is often the GPU/chipset or power regulation around it. ’s hunch about the board is plausible. Also, the report from that flexing the palmrest area makes it start is a classic clue: board flex is temporarily restoring contact under a BGA chip (GPU/chipset). That is a symptom, not a fix.

Quick, safe triage you can do without special tools:

  • Disconnect AC and battery. Hold the power button for 30–60 seconds to discharge. Reconnect only AC and try again.
  • Reseat memory. If there are two SO-DIMMs, test one at a time and in each slot. Bad RAM or a bad slot will halt POST with exactly your symptoms.
  • Boot with drives and extras removed (HDD/SSD, optical, Wi‑Fi). You only need CPU, one RAM stick, and the display to reach BIOS. Note any beep or LED blink patterns.
  • Attach an external VGA monitor before power-on. If both internal and external are dead, it is almost certainly board-level. If external works, suspect the LCD cable/panel/inverter instead.
  • Inspect and clean the heatsink/fan. A clogged cooler can overheat the GPU/CPU quickly and cause immediate shutdowns. Verify the fan spins at power-up.

If palmrest pressure changes the behavior, you are likely facing a BGA solder issue. The only durable remedies are mainboard replacement or a professional reball; heat-gun/oven “reflows” are short-lived at best. Do not attempt anything involving water or a microwave (good call, ). For later posters like and with similar no‑display Compaq models, the same isolation steps apply. If repair cost exceeds the value of the machine, pull the drive and recover data with a USB adapter before doing anything else.

You should post this question as a new discussion rather than a comment to a 13 year old, long dead, thread. That way you are more likely to get your question answered. Not all those who might be able to help will see this otherwise... All the best.
