Symptoms reported by (poor resolution and a big drop in Windows Experience Index) are classic signs Windows is using the generic Microsoft Basic Display Adapter instead of the card-specific driver. Confirm what Device Manager lists under Display adapters — if it shows the generic adapter, the manufacturer driver needs to be installed. Microsoft Basic Display Adapter explanation.

Recommended ordered checklist (follow these steps before assuming the card is dead):

  • Confirm the exact Windows edition and bitness (32 vs 64‑bit) and download the matching AMD package for the Radeon HD 7770 from AMD’s official support page.

  • Install or update motherboard/chipset drivers first so PCIe enumeration is correct.

  • Remove any partial/old drivers completely (use Display Driver Uninstaller in Safe Mode or AMD’s cleanup tools), reboot, then run the AMD installer offline (disconnect network so Windows Update does not reapply a generic driver). Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

  • If the AMD installer reports “no adapters detected” or an Error 173, that usually means Windows/installer cannot see the GPU (not just a driver mismatch). Community threads on this error show it often means the card isn’t enumerating or is missing required support files. Error 173 / “hardware not found” examples.

  • Check the hardware: confirm the card is seated in a PCIe x16 slot, the auxiliary power is connected (many HD 7770 boards require 1×6‑pin), reseat, try another PCIe slot or PC, and set BIOS primary display to PEG/PCIe if present. Radeon HD 7770 specs (6‑pin).

Final notes: was right to ask about Windows and chipset drivers; ’s driver-tools suggestion is noted, but prefer official AMD downloads and a clean uninstall/reinstall (DDU or AMD cleanup) over third‑party updaters. If the card never appears on any system after the hardware checks, failure/return is likely.
