It's not the users for whom I feel sorry. Yes, they'll have to learn a bit more about how they're going to interact with - sorry, use - their computers when multitouch comes into significant amounts of hardware with Windows 7.0, but if it's as easy and intuitive as some of the phones on the market then that's not going to be the problem.
Multitouch is coming - it says so here - and for anyone with something like the HP Touchsmart I looked at a couple of years ago for the Guardian it' actually been here for a while.
This is the thing, though. It's effectively already here and hardly anyone has noticed. The manufacturers are saying it's going to be great for (for example) a kitchen PC; well frankly I'm not sure.
Let's think for a moment. It's been out there for a couple of years even before the credit crunch and hardly anyone cares. Yes, it'll improve but nobody has bitten yet and I don't see any reason to assume they would, even if it weren't for the credit crunch.
And the real problem is that the credit crunch - or recession, or whatever we're calling it this month - is very much a thing that's out there. It's hurting a lot of people, you don't need me to tell you that.
It's not a great time to be launching a new technology, in other words. Nobody has the money to buy into it at the moment and they didn't put their hands in their pockets when they did. I could be wrong of course, but I don't think multitouch has a massive future.
