If the goal is just to play Halo titles on a modern PC with the least fuss, the supported route today is Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC) on PC. MCC brings Halo 2 (Anniversary) and Halo 3 to Windows with current multiplayer and patching; it is the recommended, stable path for most players and modders. See the MCC Steam page for current system requirements and platform details: Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Steam.
If the goal is to use the original Halo 2 (the older PC build) specifically for classic mods, expect extra work. Community fixes and guides historically existed to get that build running on unsupported Windows versions, but they can be fragile and depend on deprecated services and DRM. Practical options: run the original build on a native Vista install (or a VM with GPU passthrough if you know how), keep clean backups of installers and saved games, and follow active community threads for patches rather than relying on unofficial binaries. Note that Anniversary-era assets and MCC use different file formats, so classic mods often need conversion or separate tooling.
For background on the franchise and collection releases, see the Halo 2 / MCC summaries: Halo 2 (Wikipedia) and Halo: The Master Chief Collection (Halo Waypoint). Always use legal copies and backup files before attempting community patches.

Halo 2 was released for Vista only (and XBox 360 of course).
I've heard some people got it to work on XP, but never tried to find out how. Couldn't care less about the entire genre of first person shooters, but I'm sure you could find out how if you put in some effort.
Halo 3 isn't available for PC AFAIK :)
