Since the silence began after a repair, 's suggestion to involve the shop is sensible. Post-repair audio failures are often hardware-related (a speaker connector left loose, a muted/disabled audio device in firmware, or a damaged speaker/amplifier) rather than a simple volume or driver setting. A short set of noninvasive checks will usually reveal whether the fault is software/configuration or a hardware/connection issue.

Quick, safe checks to run now:

  • Check Device Manager for the sound category: missing devices or yellow icons point to driver/recognition problems; an uninstall + reinstall using the laptop maker's support drivers is preferable to a generic driver.
  • Verify Services: open Services (run services.msc) and confirm the Windows Audio service is running and set to Automatic.
  • Confirm the default playback device and mute/state in the OS volume controls; run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag) and use the Sound tab to test output.
  • Try known-good headphones or external USB speakers. Insert and remove the headphone plug several times to clear a stuck detection switch.
  • Boot from a live Linux USB/CD to test audio outside the installed OS — working sound in a live environment points to drivers/OS settings; silence there usually means a physical issue.

Start -> Run:

services.msc
dxdiag

When the quick checks find nothing, the most likely causes after a repair are a disconnected or mis-seated speaker cable, a damaged speaker or amplifier, or audio disabled in firmware. The repair facility should verify internal speaker connections and perform a hardware test before charging for further work. Avoid opening the chassis while under warranty or an active repair agreement; if out of warranty, a documented diagnostic from the shop (or a reputable technician) will help determine whether parts replacement or reconnection is required.

Have you discussed the problem with the folks who repaired it?
