The DVD drive (Pioneer DVR-K14VAS drive) on my Sony Vaio laptop has recently developed a weird problem - it only reads DVDs and CDs bought from a store - like movies or music CDs.

It does not read any of the CDs or DVDs that I have burnt over the years - windows pops up a message that the disc is empty. I can check using an external drive that the disc is not damaged. In particular it does not boot from the recovery CD.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Edit: Windows XP Home is the OS.

Hi,
The first thing I would try is to clean the drive with a DVD cleaning disk and see how that goes. It sounds like the drive is either dirty or on it's way out.
