Symptoms like skipping one or more folders when pressing Explorer's Back button are most often caused by either a flaky pointing device (button bounce / double-clicks) or a touchpad gesture/driver that is sending extra Back commands. Hardware was already suggested by and , and 's history dropdown is a useful workaround for jumping to a specific prior folder but does not address the root cause.
Troubleshooting checklist (in order of effort):
When the problem is driver/software related, updating or reinstalling the touchpad/mouse driver from Gateway's support site usually fixes it. When it is hardware (worn switch or faulty touchpad), replacement of the mouse or service/repair of the touchpad will stop the skipping.

I used to have a mouse with a sticky button which would click more than once. Does it happen with anything else?
