how to set up a small client server network

hi,

how do i set up a small client server network at home? i.e:
1 server
1 client

this is for test purposes only and for me to learn how client server networks and AD DS works.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

i know this sounds like a big task but i'd like to know the basics of what i need.
