I have a .txt file and it contains a word and it's meaning. The word and the meaning are separated by a tab. I am noticing different tab sizes for the words i.e. the no. of white spaces separating the word and the meaning are not same for every entry. I checked the file on a hex editor and it shows 09H for the tab but yet the sizes of the tabs for the entries are different. I am working on Windows 7. I searched on the net but couldn't find anything related to this problem.

The tab key measures spaces along a line, from the beginning of the [any] line. Mine in notepad.exe is equivalent to 8 spaces; thus:
-a tab- 12345... the "1" would be one tab position along the line. In this browser, on this site, a tab is equivalent to 4 spaces, but the tab action is way ropey on this site.
