Short summary: the popups come from in‑text/ad tooltips and the scripts that power them. found the forum-level switch and confirmed that turning off client‑side scripting removes the tooltips; also pointed out the blunt option of disabling JavaScript entirely. Those approaches work, but they either remove useful site features or are overbroad. A better long‑term approach is selective blocking so the forum still functions while the ad/tooltips are stopped.

A practical, low‑risk method for Firefox is a script‑control add‑on (for example NoScript). Configure it to block third‑party scripts by default, then allow the forum domain and any other trusted domains you need. That prevents the in‑text tooltip scripts from running without breaking dynamic features you rely on. Use temporary/one‑session permissions when a feature needs JavaScript.

If you prefer an easier, non‑technical fix, a content blocker with an element picker (for example uBlock Origin) will hide the tooltip overlay. When the popup appears, open the element picker, click the tooltip, and create a cosmetic rule scoped to the forum. That removes the visual nuisance without touching scripting permissions. Reader mode or keyboard scrolling (PageUp/PageDown or Space) are simple workarounds that avoid hover triggers while you skim.

Notes and cautions: blocking ad scripts improves privacy and load times but can break widgets (rich editors, file uploads, threaded menus). If something stops working, revoke or relax the rule temporarily. Combining the forum’s built‑in toggle (the quickest fix noted in this thread) with a blocker that targets only the offending elements gives the cleanest result with the least collateral damage.

just wanted to add I'm using FireFox, latest version ,.I don't use IE

There is always a way. Or two....
1] don't mouse-over them - they are pretty obvious to see. Usually.
2]because they use javascript, disable that in your browser. But you might miss it.
That is about it. Try not to use your pointer as a reading aid, books n newspapers don't have em.... if the mouse-over is very brief they should not respond.

Hello, there are just so many on a page, and i guess i use my mouse wheel a lot to scroll through posts speed reading ..I'm trying the disable java to see if i need it for more important stuff.thanks .oh and i rarely read books and newspapers

Hiya, caperjack.... yeah, they can be a pest, I will admit, especially if you're using the copy function. Amazing how often the selection you want ends on one of those critters.
I use FF also, look under tools, options, content tab, javascript check box [not java...], but you knew where it was, didn't you?... too late, I posted already.
Newspapers are a conspiracy to get us interested in stuff that normally would not bother us - this is a big world, they try desperately to make it like it 's all just down the road a bit. I just cannot get involved in a bus falling off a cliff in Nicaragua....
Books? there is another world in books....

This forum should be easy.
control panel > edit option > disable intellitext

For other you may need to disable javascript. But that may have bad affect on navigation.

Found it!

In the Control Panel, edit your options and tick Disable IntelliTXT.

Et voila.
