I tried to simply set up a connection between two computers( a desktop and a notebook).
I used wired connections on both. Initially I could not see the shared files on the notebook, I then realized I a had a firewall setup with symantec. I disabled the firewall and I was then able to view the files. Yet I don't want to be without a firewall.

What is the safest thing to do in this situation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I've never used Symantec (would rather have a wart somewhere intimate) so I can’t step you through it precisely, however almost all firewalls will allow you to add IP addresses and ranges to the "trusted zone"

Let’s say your gateway is 10.0.0.1 then simply add 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.50 to the "trusted zone"
