Need to insure that a port is open for an online course. Not sure if allowing a port to be open is the same as port forwarding. Hoping there is an informed WRV200 owner that can guide me. I have been to the routers interface but still not sure which interface page is appropriate

Is the required port outbound or inbound?
If the request is to ensure outbound port TCP# is open, then you should be ok as long as you don't have any outbound restrictions configured.
If the request is for an inbound port #, then that's different. It's also a little out of the ordinary. Can you post the exact request? Lets see what it is they need exactly.
