After a reboot, I lost the ability to connect to the internet when I log onto Windows normally. It detects the right Network Card, and the latest drivers are installed. When attempting to install WinPoet (error 629 for Verizon), the install fails because there is no Ethernet card installed, although there is an onboard NIC card and it is installed in Device Manager.

If I boot up in Safe Mode with Networking, the internet works fine. This is a standard Dell Dimension 2400 connected directly to a D-Link router.

Any ideas?

Do you have viruses or spyware on your computer? It sounds like some process is restricting access to the network card. Try running a virus scan to make sure.
