I'm just curious, is it possible spybot caused this? If not, any idea what did?

... And backup the registry before making any changes with regedit.
If the drive has been completely wiped, you have no choice but to do a fresh install of WinXP -- unless I'm missing something here?
Need some basic info first, like what operating system, how much RAM, and CPU type. If you're using a Windows OS, you can right-click on the My Computer icon, and then click on Properties, to get this information. The CPU will probably be listed as x86 Family... or something like that. If you're using a different OS, you should be able to tell by watching the screen while it's booting up. Also include your hard drive size; to find this, double-click on the same My Computer icon, then right-click on the "C" drive, and then click on Properties. Your hard drive size will be shown as well as the amount of used and free space; post all that info.
I need help on how I install a second Hard Drive onto my PC, I know there is a way to install XP without having to reinstall the whole thing, I'm just not sure how.
Assuming you already have a hard drive with WinXP on it, and you just want to add another drive, you won't need to reinstall XP at all. If you're trying to do something else, please clarify. Here's a link with instructions on how to do it, complete with pictures!
http://www.infohq.com/Computer/adding-second-hard-drive-review.htm
A few things I'd like to mention (they may or may not be in the instructions):
1.) Backup your data before doing anything... just in case.
2.) Protect your computer from static eletricity by using a wrist strap or by touching a metal part of the case frequently while working in it.
3.) While you have the case open, clean it if it hasn't been done recently (vacuum and/or blow with canned air).
Good luck!
Something else that may help is to disable, or set to start manually, services that you don't need running all the time (usually things like ipod, itunes, quick time, etc.). To get there, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.
Also, update your HJT before you post another log.
This worked for me with the same problem; first go to:
http://www.resplendence.com/reglite
Download and install Registrar Lite, and then run the program. Copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs
and hit the "GO" tab. On the right side panel find the "Appinit_Dlls" value; double-click it (if you don't double-click, it won't work), and then copy and post the information that comes up in the "Value" field here in this thread for instructions on what to do next.
Thanks, just to clarify...I am not runnung Windows NT, but XP Pro....do I still follow the same steps? When I follow your steps as per the link you sent me, I see the culprip file in reglite as:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ms.dllI just want to be sure I delete the correct file and not something that is a system file.
Thanks......
I was running XP Home on the computer I had the problem with, but I don't think the OS really matters (as long as it's windows). After you delete the ms.dll, post a HJT log so the senior techs can review it and hopefully mark this thread as solved!
Has that person upgraded to SP2? That is one of the many problems with SP2, check out this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=884130&product=windowsxpsp2
If he hasn't done that, you need to wait to see if someone else can help because I don't know what else it could be.
This thread has some links that may interest you as well:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread9194.html
I don't know what the difference is, but I read that SP2 for XP Pro won't be available till later this month; SP2 for XP Home is available, but only if your computer is set up for auto updates.
This should have been put in the Security forum, but someone will move it there for you soon. In the meantime, do a search here for bookmarker.gen and start using some of the things suggested in those threads (like adaware, spybot, etc.).
Well I hate to say it but it is now back... I'm slowly drawing a blank, the file pointed to in the registry does not exist. A new dll gets created but I delete it in safe mode. hijackthis shows up some entries which i remove in safe mode, I then run, spybot, noadaware etc, cw shredder, about:buster, in safe mode, for each user, but then it comes back.QUOTE]
Reglite worked for me in fixing a similar problem, it will make the offending dll visible so it can then be deleted. Have a look at the last several posts in this thread for downloading and using it:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/showthread.php?t=8508&page=2&pp=15Good luck!
Go to the thread I gave you before and look towards the end for instructions on using reglite. It should make theses dll's visible so you can delete them.
Thanks, I guess I'll give that a try and see how it goes.
I've heard Opera has problems with java scripts, do you know if this is true or not?
Nothing there helped, all the Dependency services required are set to start automatically. The only thing I found in the search is that others that have the same problem after cleaning viruses; I just recently got rid of a trojan (with the help of the techs here). That is probably what caused it, but I need to know how to fix it now. Windows update doesn't give me anything new either.
Maybe ,if you haven't updated to the SP2 you could do that now , and that might fix it as the firewll in sp2 is new and better ,It also works outgoing now .
I tried Windows Update and it didn't give me sp2 as a choice, has it been released yet?
Thanks, I'll give that a try.
Why is Mozilla the best? Does anyone have any negative comments about Mozilla?
Does anyone know how I can at least enable my XP firewall?
Anyone know how I can enable my XP firewall?
Hey, can you put this on a "sticky thread" so it's easier for us newbies to find?
I've decided to stop using Internet Explorer as my primary browser. I would like to here any recommendations for another browser to use, both good & bad, negative & positive. The only other one I've used is Netscape so that is my first choice unless someone has a better option or knows of some reasons not to use it.
Thanks!
I just noticed yesterday that my Windows XP Firewall is no longer enabled. It always has been so I don't know when, or how, it got disabled. When I go to Network Connections -- Properties -- Advanced, the Internet Connection Firewall is unchecked; when I try to check it, I get an error message as soon as I click OK:
"An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependancy service or group failed to start."
I tried using the Wizard, which set it to be enabled, but then it's not.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?
Try this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/showthread.php?t=8508
It took awhile, but finally got it cleared up! Follow the steps I did, including posting HJT logs because you may have more problems than you are aware of.
Post your complete log in your original thread (instead of starting a new one).
I wish to un-install XP Pro. How do I do this?
Start a new thread; ask this question under your own thread, not someone else's, you'll get a much better response.
Well, I think I found out why it doesn't work, but I don't know how to fix it. The problem seems to be on the host computer (which is running Windows XP). I go to Network Connections -- Properties (for the NIC that connects to the net) -- Advanced. Here, the Internet Connection Firewall and Internet Connection Sharing boxes are both unchecked; when I try to check either of them (or both), I get an error message as soon as I click OK:
An error occurred while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled. The dependancy service or group failed to start.
I tried using the Wizard, which set both of these to be enabled, but then they're not.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to fix it?
i did post the value.. that was what the value was... what am i suppose to do with it?
Oops, sorry, my mistake. I thought you were just saying you looked for it there, not that that was the actual value. I actually thought Crunchie would get back to you on this, but since he hasn't I've copied the instructions he gave me and put them below. The only thing I changed is your dll file name. This fix worked for me, so hopefully it will for you as well:
-Run reglite : type--
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs into the address bar, or expand the same key.
-Rename the Folder Windows
to NotWindows (highlighted as a purple folder in the left hand pane of reglite).
-Click "AppInit_DLLs" again and clear the data value:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hlpmidb.dll <- delete this line , click 'Apply' and 'ok' to set.
-Then, rename the NotWindows folder back to its original name, Windows
-Restart computer
Now check the system32 folder, the culprit dll (hlpmidb.dll) should now be visible.
If it is, delete it. If all goes well, your problem should be gone!
25.000,what the heck did you delete !!
"I" didn't delete it, it was either another user (though I doubt it), the trojan itself, or the process of removing the trojan; I don't think these last two are very likely either, but something/someone did in fact delete it.
Like I mentioned before, this is my backup drive. I had most of the things I wanted to keep in this folder: pictures, emails, documents, presentations, etc.
The good news is, I can get the majority of it back; it will just take some time restoring them one-by-one.
In the readme file ,that comes with the download ,there is a email address for tech support ,ash the builder if there is a way to select all or more of the file ,maybe even ash them to update it to do so !
Good idea, I'll do that.
I said before that I had several hundred files, well actually there are nearly 25,000 according to Restorer. About 20% of these are NPROTECT. If that's the case, shouldn't I have been able to restore these with Norton somehow?
Okay, I used the Restoration program and it looks like I'll be able to get back just about everything that was missing. A couple of things have been corrupted -- probably from using that drive a bit.
The only thing I don't like about the program is that I can only recover one file at a time, which is very tedious and time consuming as I had literally hundreds of files there. But it's better then losing them!
If you are sure it was deleted, yes, you can recover it. Even if it was deleted by a trojan, there is still a chance of recovery. Files are not completely deleted until they are written over, and even then, if you try hard enough, you can restore the deleted object. I suggest this program to restore it: Restorer. When looking at the file names, remember that some files are renamed when deleted/moved to the recycle bin (Dc*.filetype, etc...).
Thanks Senter, I used the Restoration program and it looks like I'll be able to get back just about everything. A couple of things have been corrupted -- probably from using that drive a bit.
The only thing I don't like is that I can only recover one file at a time, is there a way to select multiple files for recovery? The one-at-a-time is working, but very tedious and time consuming as I had literally hundreds of files there. This was my backup drive, luckily only one folder was deleted. Guess I'd better start backing up on two drives or burning a lot of CD's.
There are programs out there that are supposed to do this. I haven't tried any yet so I can't make any recommendations. I'm looking for a reputable one myself. A couple I'm aware of are:
Restoration -- Free
Search & Recover -- About $40
If you try one and it actually works, let me know! I'll do the same.
sounds like it could be overheating.
Try taking the side off the pc to play. You might want to place a large fan to blow nice cool air into the case too.If that works then you need to see about improving your case cooling.
As Dave said, it could be overheating; if you haven't done so recently, remove the cover and vacuum and/or blow (with canned air) the fans, CPU & heat sink, and power supply. Be sure to ground yourself (either with a strap or by touching the case) to prevent damage via static electricity.
Hey all!
I have a WinXP computer that I am using as the host for ICS (internet connection sharing); I also have a Win98 computer that I am trying to access the internet with through the XP computer.
I used the XP wizard and made a floppy for the 98. I can see all the shared files from one computer to the other so I know they are connected, but I can't access the internet from the 98 machine.
I've done this before without problem so I don't know what I'm doing wrong this time. The two computers are connected via a crossover cable (two NIC's in the XP, one for internet and one to hook up to another computer) and my internet connection is cable.
Hope someone can help!
One more suggestion, make sure your IE patches are up to date using Windows Update, especially if you reinstall it.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\hlpmidb.dll and i looked for it under that.. and i searched the entire computer for that file.. but it didnt find it
Did you follow Crunchies instructions?
You need to download and install Registrar Lite. Then run it, and copy and paste this line into reglite's address bar:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs
Hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, Double Click (you have to double-click to get the info), then copy and post the information in the 'Value' field.
This fix worked for me, hopefully it will for you too. Apparently this dll is not visible until you run reglite -- this will make it visible so it can then be deleted. Crunchie will give you the rest of the instructions after you post the info in the Value field of reglite. Good luck!
Friday morning I had a folder on one of my drives partitions; Monday morning, the entire folder is missing. I've searched all the drives for some of the things in the folder in case it somehow got moved, but searches turned up nothing. All I can think is that somehow it got deleted. As far as I can tell, it's the only thing missing, and there are other folders on that same partition that are still there and open normally. I even used Safe Mode and looked in other users files to see if it got moved into one of them, but again, no luck.
There is a program called Search & Recover that sells for around $40. I'm wondering if I need a program like this or if there's another way to recover this missing folder? Does anyone know if this program actually works, or of another one that will?
Thanks for any help!
BTW, I don't think it matters, but I finally got rid of a nasty trojan Friday evening; is there any possibility at all that could have anything to do with the missing folder?
Hi,
Will anybody help me troubleshoot my winxp pc please? Its shutting down itself for few seconds without any error messages at all n it on itself and keeps the same routine time and again. But now i cant even on it, seems to have no power. Please Help.
Dear Lady, there are many possible causes for this behavior; here are a few things you can try to see if there is any improvement:
You may have a bad power supply -- test it if you know how or, if you have another one around you could put in just to check it out, you could do that, then run it and see what happens.
It could be overheating -- take the cover off and vacuum and/or blow off (with canned air) as much dirt as you can, especailly from the fans, power supply, and CPU/heatsink. Run it again and see what happens.
Have you tried running it in Safe Mode? If not, try that and see how it works. If it seems to run okay, then it is probably a software issue.
Bad RAM (memory) can also cause random shutdowns. It can be tested if the previous suggestions don't help.
Viruses and the like are also known to cause random shutdowns and/or restarts on occasion. If you can keep your computer running long enough, look through the posts in the Security section for ways to detect and remove this junk.
After …
Thank you for having the faith to stay & go the distance :) .
Marking this as solved. Anyone else with the same problem, please start your own thread. Thank you.
I don't think it was as much faith as determination! :) Still clean! Thanks again!
That looks good :) . The fix was created a while ago to combat about:blank. Since then there has been updated fixes, FindnFix being one that works (but cannot be used without permission). Thought it was worth giving the old fix a try.
Glad that it worked out for you. So, I can mark this thread as solved, you think?
Yes, I think you can mark this one as solved! Thank you so much for all your time and effort!
Glad that that worked to make the file visible :) . Time will now tell if you are clear. Does Norton still give you the warning?
I would also post another hijackthis log after a reboot in case there are more entries created by the hijacker.Update hijackthis to version 1.98.1. Run hijackthis & go to *Config\Misc Tools\Check for update on-line*. Remove 1.97 from the folder it is in & replace it with 1.98.1.
Well, been using the computer pretty much non-stop all day (all users) and no warnings! I think you finally got it! Thanks!! Here's the new, updated, hjt log:

You should probably install (or update) HiJackThis and post your own log in a new thread. I think my problem has been solved so there's hope!
-Run reglite : type--
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs
into the address bar, or expand the same key.-Rename the Folder Windows
to NotWindows highlighted as a purple folder
in the left hand pane of reglite.-Click "AppInit_DLLs" again and clear the data value:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ctlek.dll <- delete this line , (the name may have changed since you played with it)
'Apply' and 'ok' to set.-Rename the NotWindows folder back to its
original name Windows-Restart computer
Check in the system32 folder if the culprit dll is visible.
If it is, delete it.
I'd like to know how you knew, or even suspected, this might work?
Before doing anything else, I went to the system32 folder to try to find it and it wasn't there. That's the same thing that keeps happening with Norton, it says the .dll file is there, but it isn't. The Folder Options are set to Show hidden files and the file extensions (in case you were going to ask).
I went ahead and renamed the folder and deleted that line. Then changed the folder name back to Windows and rebooted. I ran reglite again and the AppInit value was still clear. I went into the system32 folder and, low and behold, ctlek.dll was there now! I deleted it. Is my problem supposed to be fixed now?
Ok, never mind, I got it. I forgot to double-click it. It's still there, I'll work on it now.
