Hi, have you tried the suggestions in this thread yet?
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread7370.html

Also, before you fix anything with HJT, it should be in a permanent folder so it can save backups in case anything goes wrong. Like c:\hjt\hijackthis.exe
(Right now you're running it from a temp folder)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Before you fix anything with HJT, you need to put it in a permanent folder so that it can save backups in case something goes wrong. Right now you're running it from a temp folder. Put it in a folder like this -- C:\hjt\HijackThis.exe

Your Windows and Internet Explorer both need to updated as well. Before upgrading to SP2, review this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread10031.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Ad-aware unfortunately can not fix this particular infection. We will still need to see a hijackthis log and do a manual removal

Agreed; in his original post he had asked what was safe to delete from the Ad-Aware scan, so I was just responding to that.

At some point, Windows, Internet Explorer, and HiJackThis should all be updated.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You need Windows updates as well.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Thanks for sharing!

According to that link, the problem isn't supposed to exist with WinXP, have you tried the fix yet to see if it actually works for you?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I have some other advice. I'm afriad I can't verify if this is true, but I've heard from my lan friends that if you have fewer icons on your desktop and use a solid color instead of a wallpaper, you can get a bit of a speedup. Try turning down your resolution, and use 16bit color instead of 32bit.

I've heard this too, can anyone verify it?

As for the resolution, I think it's best to have it set as Optimized, or the highest setting your moniter will allow to avoid eye stess and headaches.

Canned lasagna for breakfast?

Hi Abe and welcome to Daniweb. At the top of this forum is a request to post all hijackthis logs in the Security forum.

First of all you need to update your hijackthis using either the Update feature within it or from here:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Close all browser windows, scan again, and post the new log in the Security forum.

I don't know if this will be relevent or not, but did this problem start shortly after upgrading to SP2?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hey Dave, you're in luck! There are programs to recover deleted files. This is a free one that I have used with great success:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

It is suppose to recover from media cards as well, but I haven't used it for that so I can't tell you whether it will work for that or not. But on your computer, it will recover them. Keep in mind, however, the more you use your computer, the less likely it will be that you will be able to retrieve the files/pictures uncorrupted. So do it as soon as possible. Also, the program will fit on a floppy disk if you can download it using another computer and then run it from the floppy.

Good luck!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi tinchi and welcome to Daniweb. You must not have noticed, but there is a notice at the top of this forum requesting that all hijackthis logs be posted in the Security forum.

When you go the Security forum, near the top you will see a Sticky thread about bridge.dll. Please read through that and take what steps you can.

After that, update your HJT using either the Update feature within it, or from here:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Close all browser windows and post the results of the new scan in the Security forum.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Sounds like your computer could use some help, maybe you can convince your dad to at least have a look at this site. Who knows, maybe he'll join!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

This problem isn't exactly the same as yours, but similar enough to have a look at it:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread10773.html

Maybe there will be something there that will help. Read Catweazle's article as well (the link is in his post at that thread).

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Check this thread and read Catwaezle's article (link to it in his post):

Happy it helped you echoman, hope it works for whiskeyjar as well.

DMR commented: Good job- thanks for helping out here! +3
dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Well, I can't do any of what you actually requested, but if no one sends you that information, you can try this:

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

It's a restoration program that is free and worked well for me. Keep in mind, the more you use your computer (at least the drive that information was on), the less likely you will be able to recover the files or, they may become corrupted.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

See if there's anything in this thread that helps:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread10621.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

mikusofthehills, first of all, you didn't post a complete log. Scan again (make sure you're using version 1.98.2), save the scan, then copy and post the whole thing.

Before you rescan, search for lsp fix in this forum and follow the steps described, this will start your healing process. Then rescan and post.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

svikik, start your own thread (don't post in this one). Describe the exact problem you are having. When you post a log, make sure it is version 1.98.2.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Billy, since this is a tutorial, you probably shouldn't have invited people to post problems here -- more ideas and suggestions, yes, but problems should all be in their own thread.

Vino80, all HJT logs are supposed to be posted in the Security forum. Update your hijackthis to version 1.98.2 using either the Update feature in your current hjt, or by downloading it from here:

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Also, put it in it's own permanent folder (don't run it from your desktop). After you've updated it and put it in it's own folder, close all open browser windows and scan again. Post the new log in the security forum.

By the way, run Ad-Aware, Spybot, and an anti-virus program before you scan with HJT.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi Robin, I believe you probably mean WinSocks and, as Deonna said, more information is needed in order for someone to assist you. Most likely you will be able to fix it yourself, or at least get a better idea of what's wrong so if you do need to take it to a shop, they won't have to spend as much time (and your money) diagnosing it. Besides explaining what it is or isn't doing, include your operating system (like Windows 98SE) and what brand of modem Comcast gave you.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

A new thread was started for some reason, here's the original:

Have you used the CD burner before? If so, you can use it to backup all your pictures, mail, favorites, and other data you have. If you're not sure how to use the burner, go to Start, click on Help and Support, and in the Search text box, just type in burn. You should find instructions there for using it. If you need more help, feel free to post again.

AFTER you back up everything you wish to keep, read this for instructions on reinstalling XP:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread6632.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

You can download HiJackThis from here:
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/x-Download-5034.html

Save the log then post it in the Security forum. (Don't fix anything with it yet, just post the log)

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Is your computer working okay other then IE? Do you have a CD burner? Or a USB flash drive?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

If you have corrupt files, before you go through the trouble of reinstalling XP, try In-Place Upgrade, instructions are at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...1&Product=winxp

(You need to have the XP CD)

You can get a free virus online scan from trendmicro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

LOL  all three of us!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Hi. First of all you need to update hijackthis to version 1.98.2. Run hijackthis and go to Config\Misc Tools\Check for update on-line.

Scan again, with all browser windows closed, and post the new log please.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I have the same problem. Can I get a copy of the driver, PLEEEEASE

It is almost certain that Roaddog has a different video card then you, so whatever driver he used wouldn't work for you anyway. If you have your Windows CD, try getting the drivers from there like Roaddog did. If you can't do that, try Windows Update. If that doesn't work either, you need to open your computer (remember to protect your system against static damage) and get the name and model number from the video card and go to the manufacturers site for drivers. If the video is built-in (no video card), then you need to get the drivers for the motherboard.

Any more questions, please post in a new thread as this one has been marked as solved. Good luck!

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

There are two people posting questions in this thread, Whatever_b1188 and sprinter18, sprinter18 needs to start his own thread so this one can concentrate on Whatever.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

And/or a different cable.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution, you'll be lucky if you get it to boot even once, so be ready to backup as quickly as possible.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Restoration is mainly for restoring deleted files... I don't know if it will help you or not... read about it (and download it) here (it's free):

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Did you read the Sticky thread about bridge.dll at the top of this forum? You might want to have a look at that while you're waiting for someone to review your log.

Cargenius, to help keep yourself from being reinfected, use spywareblaster; it will install a list of known pests into your browsers Restricted Sites zone.

DMR, your link to Resources... didn't work for me -- is it just me or has the link gone bad?

To help keep yourself from being reinfected with something, use Spywareblaster; it will install a list on known "baddies" into your browser's Restricted Sites.

Go to this thread to click on the here links noted below:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread9820.html

Download LSPfix from here
On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. Check all instances of "lspak.dll" (and nothing else), and move them to the "Remove" pane. Then click Finish.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here & navigate to & delete the following if found:

c:\windows\system32\lspak.dll-file

Reboot normally.

You still have more to do, but someone else will have to help you with the rest. Post a new log after following the steps in this and the prior post.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

In your hjt log you can also delete all instances of red.clientapps.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Regarding your Ad-Aware log, everything it found in that list can be fixed:

Scan with Ad-Aware again; when it's finished, right-click on the screen and and choose the Select All Objects option, and then click on the Next button. Ad-Aware will now present you with a confirmation box asking whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. If you would like to do so, click on the OK button, otherwise press the Cancel button to go back to the selection screen. If you press the OK button, Ad-Aware will move all the selected items into quarantine.

Grinler has an excellent link to an Ad-Aware tutorial in his signature, check it out.

He told me he didn't go directly into my emails, but rather "intercepted" them. ??? How could he do that?

The only way he could do that that I'm aware of, is with your password -- which he probably got with the keystroke logger program you said you found. To prevent it, from another computer (not your home computer)change your password and don't write it down where it could be found by someone (on paper or on a computer). Don't use your home computer to log into your email account until you're sure the key logger is gone; go to the library, work, or wherever else.

Hope you can get this mess sorted out, sounds ugly.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

Damian, this won't fix all your problems, but it will get you started. (I found this information in this thread: http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread9820.html
compliments of Crunchie)

Download LSPfix from here
On the opening screen, click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. Check all instances of "lspak.dll" (and nothing else), and move them to the "Remove" pane. Then click Finish.

Then, update hijackthis to version 1.98.2: Run hijackthis & go to *Config\Misc Tools\Check for update on-line*. If the site is down, go here. Remove the old version by deleting the file manually. Unzip the new version into the hijackthis folder. Rescan with hijackthis & post the log.

The links that say here didn't copy for some reason, you'll need to go to the original thread to link to them.

YES! That's it! Exactly! Thanks Crunchie, glad someone can read my mind since I can't always seem to. I have a photographic memory, I just keep losing the film, lol.

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

PS- Under the comments section, whoever gave me a negative point left a childish remark saying, and I quote, "i dont like him"

I got some negative rep on 09-05-04 with this same remark, is someone just going around doing this to random people?

dlh6213 27 Posting Maven Team Colleague

I have the same problem. My antivirus used to pick it up. It is call trojan.bookmarker.gen. I have spybot but I will try the about:buster program. Hope this works because I can't downlaod my homework or anything because my explorer will constantly redirect.

Hercules, the trojan.bookmarker will probably be harder to get rid of. Do a search here for some ideas in other threads, then post your own hjt log in a new thread.

My bad, sorry. "Jest" was the wrong word to use, though my mind is blank as to what word I had intended; the best I can come up with is "jest" should have been more along the lines of "essence." I read your article Terry and thought it was well written and appropriate to this situation.
