Anyone use online backup??
Im starting to collect a rather large photo collect. Especially since I started taking pictures in RAW. Well I decided I should look into an online backup service or sorts. Dont want to lose all those memories. So what services does everyone use? I want something that offers some sort on local encryption before sending it, as to keep someone on the service end from getting a hold of my data.
I was thinking about setting up another old PC to host the printer. But I thought it was such a waste since thats all it will be doing. And there i need to really setup some sort of a backup plan that I have been putting off for a while. Thats why I thought a external HD would be good. Kill two birds with one stone. The Apple Time Capsule sparked my attention because we are thinking about replacing one of the laptops with a Mac book or a Mac Book Pro.
Alright so all of the computers in my house are all Laptops. Well the issue is when my main laptop is with me at work no one else can print with out unpluggin the USB cable from the back of my docking station. So its kind of a pain. Now I also want to get an external HD for backup. Now is are there any external hard drives out there that will let me plug in my printer so the other laptops can print when im gone?
I know the new Apple Time Capsule will do just this... but we don't have any Mac's that need to be backed up, so it might be useless to get it. But im willing to be convinced other wise. :)
Anyone have any suggestions?
Does anyone know of any plug-ins/add-ons or a way to do sub-tasks in Outlook 2007? I work on a lot of projects at work and need some way to keep them grouped together. For example:
Project 1
-Task1
-Task2
-Task3
Project2
-Task1
-Task2
-Task3
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
press alt+cntrl+del and end process what is using CPU
I tried that already. I killed all unnecessary services and it acted no different. It even acts that way when windows starts up for the first time.
Ok so I have an issue thats really starting to get annoying. When I try to open "My Computer" it freezes. Not the whole PC, just "My Computer" If I wait long enough it will eventually start working again. But thats usually takes anywhere from a min to 2 mins. Also when I right click on the start button or any item on the start menu it does the same thing.
Now if I click on "My Computer" and it freezes I am usually able to still keep on working in other applications as normal. I can also go to Start -> Run and get to my drives that way. So it just seems to be when I try to access My Computer or any item that is tied into that service.
Any help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance!
Ok so does anyone know of a GPO or a way that will restrict my users from saving UN and PW in IE? I run around 600 public facing machines that I lock down. Recently I found out that they can save their UN and PW in IE6. I will be deploying IE7 shortly so if you know how to prevent this from happening in that version too I would greatly appreciate it.
Also, does anyone know of a good IT forum that is more geared toward the enterprise field.
Thanks in advance!
Anyone????
So I deleted some files that are on a drive mapping of remote computer. Where do they get put? I looked in both recycle bins, and there is nothing. Anyone know?
Yeh....see your point! Its shaping up as a real tough nut to crack.
mmmmm...maybe suggest entering the bios and setting the boot order to CD drive manually, placing the disc in the drive before booting if you havent already tried!
Surely its not possible that the discs are all bad burns....slow the write speed right down to 2x? (or are you using a gen disc)
Maybe im just clutching at straws!!!
Hope you get to the bottom of this and i will watch this thread with interest.
Good Luck dude
Yup I have tried everything... I used a CD that I know worked. I just used it a day or two before on another PC. So its starting to point to the MOBO.. Damn!!!! Anyone else have any ideas?
Have you done all your scans and ruled out Malware as a possible cause?
I have run a full system scan for anti-virus and Malware.... found nothing.
Can you give any clues as to what caused these strange events to happen last Wednesday? Install any new software or add any new hardware :) or do anything out of the ordinary?
There is nothing that I can think of that would have caused any of this. In fact I went out of town for a few days and when I left it was working just fine.
Checked all of your IDE data ribbon and molex power connections to the drive just to make sure all is snug, especially your secondary channel connection to the mobo!
I pulled everything out of the box and reinstalled it making sure everything was good and tight. Oh and I forgot to mention before that I even took an extra DVD drive of mine and hooked it up, it returned the same result at the first 2 drives.
I dont know what else to try.
So last Wed I noticed that my PC was acting really weird. A few quick examples, I couldnt remote into it and it was running really really slow. Well I went to reinstall XP and it wont boot from CD. It gives me the "Press any key to boot from CD" So its seeing that there is a bootable CD in the drive. But when I press any key it freezes right away. There are two CD drives on that IDE channel and it does the same thing in the other drive. I also tried three different XP cd's, including one that I just burned. So I resorted to using my set of XP boot disc's. It runs thru the disc's just fine, but when they get done I get an error saying that it cant find an XP cd in the drive. I cant figure out whats going on.
Anyone have any suggestions? I really hope my secondary IDE channel isnt toast.
Opps... sorry about that guys and gals. Again any help you can offer would be great. Thanks!!
So I just signed up with a new ISP that is giving me 8 static IP's. Well I want to put my server on one of them. The server will be an FTP and will host pictures for MySpace and forums. What I want to know is what exactly do I need to protect my server, what software or hardward should I get? The server has been behind my NAT, so im not sure what todo about it being in the open. Any help would be greatly apprecieated. Thanks!!
Is there anything out there that will sit on my desktop so I can monitor CPU, memory temp in real time. I have tried bginfo from sysinternals, the way it looks is exactly what I am looking for, but it does not monitor temp.
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/BgInfo.html
Does anyone know of anything else that work?
Thanks
If the site you host the pictures on has a secure encryption strategy there shouldn't be a problem about safety...
How would I find out if it does or not? I dont see anything on their website... www.cirtexhosting.com
So what else can I do to protect my pictures?
Anyone?
So I have a personal website that I want to be able to put pics on. Vacations and family photos, ect. The only reason I want to do this is so friends and family can view the pictures.
So my question is how safe is it to put pictures like that on the web where anyone can get to them?
I have been looking and cant seem to find what im looking for. I want to be able to go to my website and view a calendar with my appointments and important dates. I have see a few calendars, but none with the feature I am looking for. I want to be able to update it with my home computer. It doesnt have to be a constant thing, if it updates once a day I would be happy with that. Anyone know of anything? It would be great if I would work with Outlook too, but ill try anything.
I have a jump drive that I am wanting to put private files on. Like my MS Money Backup and a file that stores passwords. Whats the best way of doing this? All I want to be able todo is encrypt the files that are in a specific folder on my USB jumpdrive.
I have tried TrueCrypt and its a pain beacuse of the way it creates virtual drives and having to mount and un-mount the drive everytime you want to get to the files. Anyone have any suggestions on what to use?
Ok so I have a FTP server running on Windows 2003. Well I want to make a folder where my users can drop files in. But that is the only folder that I want them to be able to drop files in.
In IIS if i give the FTP site write access it will let me drop what I want where I want. If I take away the write access but give my users write access to that folder it wont let them write to the upload folder. Anyone have any ideas how to make it so only one folder in my FTP site has write access?
Ok so I rebuilt my FTP server this weekend and im having a little problem this time. As far as I can see I set it up the same way I did last time. But I can only FTP in with WS FTP. I cant get in with anyother program and IE. I cant even get in locally: ftp://localhost/
Anyone have any suggestions?
Anyone have any suggestions?
So I was hoping to get some suggestions on what software to use to monitor my server. The server hosts a FTP and a small website. What I want todo is setup my second monitor on my server to have the app up all the time. Is there something that will tell me whos connected, from where and whats is my upload and download rate? Maybe even something what will tell me what file is being transfered?
I thought about that too... I did a little test and tried opening the file from another a friends computer and it wouldnt work. But if i tried to copy to to my friends computer it asked me if i wanted to remove the encryption, i said yes, and I could read everything just as if it was never encrypted.
Im having a hard time trying to keep track of all my passwords. I dont want to use just one becuse its not safe. I was thinking about using a program to keep track, one that will go on my jump drive. But I want to know what all the IT masters are doing?
I have one idea which i tried and it was very successful...actually i didn't wanted the same old presentation...the power point one....every one did that...so i made posters of each of my slide and stick it on the walls of my class...then moved to each poster and explained it....and that was little different....and it worked..i got extra marks for that
That would be a cool idea. But my teacher said we must use powerpoint because he wants to be able to take home a copy of the slides for grading. Thanks for your idea though.
Anone have any ideas on topics?
Anyone have any good ideas for a presentaion in IT? I need todo one for my class in a few weeks and cant seem to come up with any good original ideas. You think it wouldnt be hard to come up with an idea, but cant seem to. It can be on anything related to the IT field and a topic that I can get a 8 min powerpoint presentation out of. Anyone have any ideas?
anyone?
I was wandering if there was a way to use veritas 10.0 to backup data thats on my server to a hard drive thats on my desktop? I can only seem to get it to allow me to make a backup to a local hard drive.
Well, itunes i good. Ephpod is ok. Just google em'.
I have used iTunes and I dont like the way it tries to organize music. For example if i have a sound track cd or any cd that has more then one artist, it puts each artist in it own folder. That makes the folder structure really messy.
I just wanted to bring this topic back up again since I didnt get any replys before. Anyone have any ideas. Oh and I have iPod that I would like to be able to use.
I need a little help trying to setup a backup process. I cant seem to figure out the best way todo it. I was hoping if I explained my setup you might be able to give me ideas.
Ok here it is:
PC1) Win XP w/ 2 160 SATA drives. 1 drive is for the OS, the other is being used for nothing right now. This PC is also my gaming computer.
PC2) Win 2003 w/ a 40 gig OS drive and 2 80g IDE drives in a Raid 0. This is my server.
Laptop) Win XP w/ a 100g HD. This is my main computer that i use for Outlook and everyday use.
Is there anyone who has a similar setup that might be able to explain how they back their data up? I just cant seem to find a way with out it taking 8 hours. I have no problem switching drives around. The only thing is that PC1 is the only computer that SATA connections. Any one have any ideas?
Ok so I am having a little trouble with my Outlook Address book. If im in a new message and try to add a contact to send the message to it tells me that my address list can’t be displayed. But if I click on contacts I can see all of my contacts.
I can’t seem to figure this out. Any ideas?
Bump!!! Anyone have any ideas?
Opps sorry... ill move it.
So im trying to find some sort of a program that I can use on my laptop, I have outlook and love it but I have a problem syncing my laptop and desktop PST file. They keep on over writing each other. So I thought maybe I would find a real nice program that will sync up with my outlook PST on my desktop. It only needs to sync the contacts and calendar. Anyone got any suggestions?
I cant change ports on the NAT. A company that my apt complex hired controls eveything as far as networking past the walls.
I am planning on setting up a ftp server for personal use on a second computer that has Win XP on it. What is the best and most secure way of setting up a FTP server? Like i siad before it is just for personal use. No more than 1 connection at a time.
You could try Hamachi. I haven't had a chance to set it up myself yet, but it gets good reviews .
That is awesome. I have a few questions for someone that has used the program before.
I created a network and it gve me a ipaddress at the top. Now if i want can i ftp into that ip to get to my home ftp server?
Do i need the software on every computer that i am going to be connecting from?
Does that ip address change? I would like to setup a dyndns, something like me.homeip.net(not my real dyndns. Is this possible?
I have a very larg collection of mp3's that i want to get organized and properly tagged. What software do you audiophiles use to keep things running smoothly and clean?
I use VNC to connect to Windows and Linux desktops from Windows and Linux Desktops all the time.
You will need to have VNC installed at both ends, VNC is free and you can get it from here:
http://www.realvnc.com/download.htmlYou need to run VNC (app mode) before you go out, and you should set a password.
then from the remote end open VNCviewer and type the IP address (this is obviously not going to work to well if you have a dynamic IP address.)
VNC is a little slow over the internet, but it does the job just fine, like i said, I use it all the time, and I connect to machines that are behind firewalls, routers, DSL modems, they all work just fine.
SE
I dont think a VNC will work. I am behind a nat. So that means there is on ipaddress coming into the apt complex and it splits off into local 192 address. So i can type the address but that will only get me as far as the nat. Is there anything else i can try. Would something like pc anywhere work? I just dont want to have to pay for it really.
Oh and if you didnt notice i changed my username. Found one that i like alot better.
