It looks like I'm about to purchase a Asus K8V SE Deluxe motherboard to up grade my computer which has a 300watt power supply, and I'm tying to find out if that will be enough. Are there any other compatability issues that I should be aware of?
I do appreciate the help, I'm slowly but surely getting there. dcc

Nobody ever seems to have a direct answer for that question.
I have an Antec Sonata case that came with a 380 watt psu.I have an Asus P4c800-E deluxe mobo , 9800 pro ,3 case fans,2 hard drives , and 2 optical drives. I often wondered if the psu was suppling enough power.
This particular psu regulates its fan speed according to the heat it produces.Of course the more power being used , the hotter its gonna get.
Anyhow , your Asus motherboard should come with the program pcprobe.
With pcprobe i figured that if the voltages all stay within the norm and the psu fan is not running full blast , then things must be ok.
Good luck.

I found this too.

Adding a Second Drive:

1. Make sure your drive is detected by your SATA controller.

2. Start Windows XP.

3. Once Windows has fully booted up, access Disk Management by first clicking on the Start button.

4. Select Run.

5. In the text box type diskmgmt.msc and click OK

6. When Disk Management opens, a wizard may appear entitled: Initialize and Convert Disk Wizard.

Note: You must use this wizard to write a Signature to the drive otherwise, the drive will not work with Windows XP. If the wizard does not appear, you may need to manually complete this process following the steps below:

1. Right click on the name of the drive to be initialized. (Drives are numbered as follows: drive 0 being the boot drive and drive 1-3 are all other drives. For CDs, the first CD is CD 0 the second CD 1 and so forth.)

2. Choose Initialize from the menu that appears.

3. The next screen shows the drive you selected to initialize. Make sure the drive is checked and click Next.

4. You will have the option to convert the drive from basic to dynamic storage.
Leave this unchecked and click Next.

5. Click Finish

WD tend to include legacy bits in their drives (like the old molex power connector). Jumpers aren't necessary for SATA drives though, since there's only one per cable!

I got courious as to why they would put jumpers on if they weren't needed.I found this on the WD website.

Set the jumpers:

The drive has a jumper block located next to the ATA power connector. There is generally no need to change the default jumper setting in order to use the drive. The only use of this jumper block is to enable or disable power management for the drive. The drives ship in the default position with the shunt on pins 1-2 (disabled). Alternately, the jumper can be removed completely with the same result. Placing the shunt on pins 3-4 (enabled), designates that the drive will power-up in standby mode. For most users the default position should be used.

I aslo found this , I hope it helps you unionman.
I know you werent installing windows at the time. Thought maybe it was related somehow.

Problem:
The Windows setup process does not detect any hard drive when you try to install Windows 2000 or XP onto a Serial ATA hard drive.

Cause:
The Windows 2000 or XP CD does not currently contain the drivers for Serial ATA controllers.

Solution:
When starting the Windows installation process, watch the bottom of the screen for a prompt that asks you to press the …

WD Raptors

Before the os installs , it should ask you if you want to install raid drivers.
Raid drivers HAVE to be installed first , otherwise i assume the os will install on one drive.
I have Raid 0 on one of my computers. If i were you i wouldnt bother. The preformance gain is minimal and not worth the hastle.
After i bought and installed my 2 WD 36gig raptors Raid 0 , i found out that a single 74gig Raptor has a much faster seek time than my raid.

I have a better solution...

If your child will not give you the password, take away the computer.

There is NO justification for behavior like that...

Having a PC is not some guarantee in the constitution...

Lock him or her out and have them use the PC at the public library...

I second that idea.

I have already purchased an Aztech v92 extrernal Modem. It is working fine. I tried to take out the PCI Modem and tried different slots. It was of no use because XP loads the driver automatically and I am not able to point towards the correct driver. My driver file is Modem830.exe. Is there some way to point the hardware wizard to point to this file or make a CD like we have for our external modem(In this I point to a file D:WinXp) . Am I talking silly? Anyway, thanks for your reply.

Go to either the device manager or phone and modem options in the control panel. Find your pci modem, properties , choose to "update driver" ,install from specific location ,then browse to you Modem830.exe.
I believe you have to direct it right to the "XP" folder within the 830 exe.
As others have said...if its a WinLucent modem you might as well not waste your time.
WinLucent was takin over by Agere. When you run that 830 exe. it will rename your modem to Agere. It will not help at all .I tried everything then
finally just bought a differant brand as i mentioned earlier.
good luck.

I think one should go to manufacturer site for drivers.

In my case,I have upgraded from Windows 2000 professional to Windows XP. I have a agere Win build in modem(v90).My computer is Hp Pentium 3. I downloaded Modem830.exe from agere(Lucent win) site. Not able to connect to internet. Do I need some different drivers? From where? The only difference I see( not sure) that Agere Win modem is on COM3,while it was on COM 2 in Windows 2000.Needs help.

I had that same modem.Always had troubles with it from day one.My computer would restart just about every time i tried connecting to or when i was on the internet. After restarting the error report always came back as driver problems. Finally one day i got pissed off and went to walmart and got a differant brand name modem for $25 and have had no problems since.
The one i got is Broadxent V.92 it made by Creative.

I created shortcuts to the desktop for my optical drives D:cd-rw and E:dvd-rw , when i click on either of these shortcuts i get a message that says"The item D:/ E: that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved , so this short cut will no longer work properly"
I get this message with either shortcut.
I deleted the shortcuts and made new ones several times and still the same message.
The A: an C: drive shortcuts work ok.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening?
Win xp pro
Thanks in advance.
