I have tried to unistall both XP and aol

Waiit, lemme clarify real fast. You tried to uninstall both AOL and XP? By uninstalling XP did you mean you tried to reformatt?

Have you tried accessing the internet on that computer with another browser besides AOL (IE, Firefox, etc)? If not, try this.

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I think the best thing to assume right now is spyware.

Post a new thread in the Virus forum along with a HJT log.

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Alrite, several things.

First, which OS are ya running?

Secondly, specifically which 'scanner' are ya using?

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Agreed. I'd reccomend Firefox for one.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to start a thread in the Virus forum, along with a HJT log, to have it checked for spyware.

Someone there will help ya.

Thanks.

Here's a basic set of instructions for configuring and running CCleaner. Below it will be the canned message.

Begin by downloading CCleaner, and specifically choosing the most recent version.

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
  3. Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
  4. After the new window appears select the "View" tab.
  5. Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders".
  6. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders".
  7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types".
  8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files".
  9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button and shutdown My Computer.
  10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now, install the program. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it):

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies
C:\Windows\Prefetch

After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and inside this, be sure your open to the 'Windows' tab. Inside, check the box …

Hmm, I hate when that happens :) I broke one of my keys on my laptop last month, and I'm too lazy to replace, so....

But ya, try the link that BilllyCasper posted if ya want further assistance.

Thanks.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh alrite :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Moved into correct forum :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I think the real question is whether its a new keyboard or not. If it's new, it might still be covered under warranty.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh alrite, cool by me. Do ya want all of them in there, or just the generalized fixes?

For example, should I just post the basics (ie adaware, ewido, ccleaner, etc)

or do ya want me to post the specialized fixes too (Wareout fix, vundo fix, haxdoor fix, etc)?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

I dunno if this idea has been brought up already, but whaddya guys think about a forum for canned messages?

This sorta came to my attention that we don't have one after I was lookin for somewhere to post the Ewido canned...

Please bear with me on my forum etiquette as this is the first forum of which I am a member.

Heh no worries, you'll get the hang of it in like, an hour.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh jeez.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh, now if that was ME, I'd apply for those handicap signs that allow ya to park closer....

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Please only use the fixes in this thread if you know what you are doing, if you get stuck during the fix please make a new topic here asking for help.

Here's how to configure the new Ewido to correctly scan and fix. Also, here's the new canned for anybody that wants it:

Please download and install ewido anti-spyware tool

Close all other Applications
Select language click OK
Click I Agree
Click next
Click Install
Click Finish
Wait.
Ewido will open main screen automatically.
Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.

This in very important to get updates

When updating has finished, Close Ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

Restart your computer.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see this site: HERE

You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work

Make sure to close …

Heh ya guys are sorta outnumbered (guys:girls ratio)...

Heh :)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Ahhh, thats what it was.

It was another forum I was at where the avatars still arn't back. I think they said it was some security issue.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh jeez....

Well I wish ya good luck in its development.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Might he be talking about how the avatars left us for a bit?

Who knows?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Wow, I didn't know that!

I take it you're a big bowler? Although I'm not a big fan of it, the rest of my family's pretty good.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Can anyone else confirm

I load on Firefox, and it doesn't take that that long, although it can get annoying after awhile when the connection slows down. But that's not too often. But ya, to answer your question, it does seem like the ads slow the page load alittle bit.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Whaa?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

{same post as in youre other thread}

as i know pc's have problems all the time

Err..it sorta depends on the user/how he treats his computer. Take my machine for example--I rarely ever have problems with it.

is it possible and is it cheap like what it costs to upgrade a PC, like memory or hard drive,

Again, it depends. If you're able to install the upgrades yourself, then you can find parts pretty cheaply.

also need a lot and i mean a lot of them. at least 10 ports.

Jeez, never seen 10 USB ports before. ever. ;)

But ya, of course I'm biased. I'm a Windows guy (although owning a Powerbook along with my array of Dells). I guess if you're main focus will be media (music, vids, etc), you might just wanna consider a Mac, cause thats about the only thing theyre good with ;)

Well outta curiosity (and I dunno whether this is taking place or not), has anybody looked into physical advertisement (ie handing out fliars or something along those lines, in a major city)?

I guess this would be easier considering Dani lives in NY...

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Hmmm, cell phone technologies...I don't think we have much here.

Sorry

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Ya, I can't lie, I havn't played many video games in awhile. But when I do, it's always on a PC or PS2, never anythin else

Generally, its America's Army I play on the pc.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh, I'm not much much of a net radio guy, so it's generally my big ole iTunes open.

However, with that said, an awsome site for finding music is Pandora.

Well, instead of describing it, I'll just let ya check it out.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Not bad guys.

DMR- ya a big fan of hiking?

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Right, but everybody here's trying to do the exact opposite ;)

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh I like it.

Plus, I'm not the one to talk...there's a vast array of tests online that are the exact same ones in the classroom....all easily acessable thanks to Google :cheesy:

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Of course there is the Daniweb blog which you have been contributing to a lot, and I really like your articles too.

Agreed.

I guess I don't have one because I don't got much meaning in the writing I do have. Therefore, having one would be a waste of server space :(

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Heh well Google's just another story.

They started out as the, you kno, 3 guys with a gigantic company. Now, theyre slowly turning into the real, gigantic company that's no longer on the user's side.

I dunno, this in itself is another thread topic...

*thinking how I'm too lazy to start a new thread*

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

OO ya, don't get me wrong. I'm not someone to bash MS. Personally, I agree with ya, that I hope it stays around.

But personally, I think it'll die a slow death among seperate companies.

'Stein 150 Lapsed Skeptic Team Colleague

Fiine, I give in heh.

No closeups or anythin though, just from my latest trip to Alaska.

Specifically, Mt. Healy (in Denali National Park):

Heck, even though many people hate Gates 'cause of Microsoft's problems, you have to ask yourself something.

Where the heck would we be if Gates wasn't here?

And plus, the philantropy (sp?) of his Foundation doesn't hurt his image one bit. I, personally, applaud him. He's definitely not in the breed of the Kennedys or the Rockefellers, who (again, personal opinion) horde their money.

And yes, I definitely agree with ya Davey:

I have a funny feeling that he will be remembered as the richest man in the world who gave most of his riches back to it. If his third world plans come to fruition, then Gates will deserve to go down in the history books as one of the good guys.

Couldn't say it better myself :)
