We do not delete postings unless they break the rules here. Deleting your postings would leave holes in threads, and leave many making non sense, this would be unfair on other members who might be able to get some help to their own problems from the answers contained within those threads.

Please PM me if you wish to talk about this any more.

all deleted, user infracted for spamming and posting piracy keys, and banned

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Yes, to clarify:

Giving reputation is a personal thing, and the management will not step in and say 'you should not have neg repped that person' for that very reason.

Abiding by the rules is a site-wide requirement, so if you are rude and offensive in your blog or even in a reputation comment then you will be warned and/or infracted and you could end up banned if you do not heed those warnings.

Who do you think? :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Bizarre. I went to the symantec website, filled in the support email form, and got a response within 2 hours. That response was the usual scripted nonsense, and it took another 24 hours for them to reply to my rather scalding explanation of why the advice was as much use as a one legged man at butt kicking party. I gave up after the second email turned out to be as much use as the first, uninstalled and reinstalled the app (Norton 360) and all worked find from then on. It was a problem with LiveUpdate which had got itself in a right old mess.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Have you tried going down the tech support route, which is free via email and in my experience here quick to respond (although also in my experience here about as useful as a chocolate teapot.)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

C'mon guys, cool down - let's just have a virtual handshake and a beer and start again, marking this one down to misunderstanding...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Welcome to DaniWeb.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Indeed. Otherwise if 197,421 members said nothing and one said they wanted every message to start with Dear Doctor, this message would have started with Dear Doctor. :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I don't wanna risk losing my job just by watching a stupid video.

You know, that is one of the most sensible contributions to the entire thread so far :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

...and got curious answers :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

One shoebox, 3 elastic bands and a copy of Windows 95.

Dani works miracles under the circumstances!

As for the PMs, will someone please explain why a "friendly PM" works any better than giving a link to the code tags sticky? Maybe it's going to have a minimal impact, but it certainly isn't going to stop the steady flow of newbies that post untagged code.

Because it provides a personal touch, a connection with a real person, that a link does not.

Because it shows that we have noticed the poster, that they are not being ignored.

Because it shows that we are more than automatons, that we are a community and that we care.

For starters :)

It won't stop that steady flow, I agree. But then I don't think that anything will for all the reasons that Dani has so eloquently related already. But it does allow us to make a connection to the membership beyond just answering or ignoring a question. Isn't that what being a community is all about?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I agree 100% about not wanting to scare away newbies, hence the concept of sending a polite PM suggesting they look at the code tags as this will increase the chances of them getting help.

Of course, if AD and the other mods are happy with correcting the missing code tags - then it really isn't an issue at all :)

iamthwee commented: Spot on! +12
happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The carrot and stick approach would seem to be the only one with any chance of working under the circumstances.

Maybe a polite PM to the offending poster pointing them towards using code tags and informing them they are unlikely to get any help unless people can read their code easily.

The Rash repbot reputation was reversed yesterday. :)

Doh! Can I blame the timezone difference? No, didn't think so :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

The Rash repbot reputation will be reversed as soon as Dani works out the best way of doing so.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I feel sorry for dani who is striving to keep this site (her lively-hood) professional. Didn't think about that before he had his fun.

Thank you for injecting something sensible into this. Quite so...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Let us not stray too far down the already well trodden path towards asking for help to break the law, otherwise I might just have to lock this thread for once and for all...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

It is in the Web Design section, here in fact.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Odd. All is fine here in FF 2.0.0.3

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Done.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I admit defeat, they are both the same aren't they and perhaps we only need the one - be that tongue sticking outing or eye winking.

;)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I which case I would suggest that the OP either lives with it or finds a different scripting solution.

Was the copyright notice issue not made clear in the terms and conditions of use prior to purchase?

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

S'OK, nobody is saying you started anything. All I am saying is that everyone needs to stop it, and stop it now.

As for the smilies situation, the reason it is in the list twice is that someone might want to use it for either poking their tongue out or winking, which are different things. The same graphical representation fulfills both though, if you see what I mean.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Let's stop the looming flame war folks, there is no need and I have my big infraction stick at the ready to hit anyone who gets in the way with.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

It is officially known as the 'I have just eaten a lemon' smiley and is multi-purpose :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Bizarre. Which browser is this in? Working fine here in FF2

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

MidiMagic is right you know, it does toggle the FireFox spoil chicken on and off...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

FWIW, and although it may often not seem that way, we appreciate your feedback. Of course, we often do not agree with it, but debate is always healthy.

As for the games situation, this will be resolved very shortly now as Dani and I have pretty much come to an agreement based upon all the discussion here and in other forums, as well as privately between the two of us.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Also note that there is no compulsion to post as a member of DaniWeb, lots of members use us to get the help they need by reading the posts of others.

While it would be nice if more people contributed by posting, it would be quite wrong to punish those who do not.

Plus, there is an argument in favor of it being better for people with nothing to add, well, to add nothing...

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Let's keep it pleasant guys, before the infraction stick comes out.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

16,674 songs at present. I have a huge CD collection because I am very old.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Welcome Don.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Hey Wolfy, you are back! Good to see you, and yes using that advanced reply button soon becomes second nature to be honest.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

It would make sense, if to prevent the 'me too' posts apart from anything else. Of course, being a gobby type I have never encountered such a thing :)

mattyd commented: ALWAYS very helpful and efficient :) +2
happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

It's a new one on me, but having said that Dani is in the process of tweaking a lot of the back-end code at the moment so it might be something thrown up by that.

Over to Dani on this one methinks.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Indeed. Hence my original fishing response to try and get a clearer picture of intent in this case.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

S'OK, you weren't in the doghouse to start with. It was just a mere nudge to ensure the thread didn't develop any further in that direction :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

I was fishing to give the guy a chance to explain what he was after and either dig a hole in which to bury himself or build a picture of something other than illegal activity.

There have been times when people use the term 'hacking' to mean something other than the expected - I've had people talk to me about mashups and refer to them as hacks, and indeed there's a whole series of O'Reilly books with a 'hacks' imprint.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Ahem. I would rather the conversation did not go down the road of social engineering hints and tips.

We really don't want to encourage the wanabee hacker, and there is a 'keep it legal' rule here remember.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Does a custom made wax seal for my hand-written letters, featuring a rather nice monogram, count as a tech toy?

Retro-tech?

Nah, thought not :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Depends what you mean by hack, and what it is you are actually trying to do.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Didn't think it was in particularly bad taste, but then I didn't think it was particularly funny either :)

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Donny Darko remains one of my favourite films, it has to be said.

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

Re-read your post before and after submitting and make corrections immediately instead of waiting till later.

What he said!

happygeek 2,411 Most Valuable Poster Team Colleague Featured Poster

how do you become a mod?
there should be like tryouts, id be interested

A serious response, if I may:

There are mod tryouts, they are called 'all your postings since you joined up' and are ever ongoing.

We actually do keep an eye on members who are helpful, knowledgeable, hard working, friendly, stick to the rules yada yada yada. When someone catches our eye in a forum or category that is not already over subscribed with mods, we pounce with an invite following the in-house debate for suitability.

Obviously it is important for existing mods to discuss such things as we work very much as a team and the new mod has to be able to fit in.

Hope that answers the question.

Oh, and we are keeping an eye on you! :)
