From what they've been saying so far, Win7 will be drastically different from Win6 (Vista/2k8).

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Why dont MS release a workstation version of server 2008? its basically what vista should have been in the first place

Because it wouldn't make sense for business. You've heard how fanatical everyone is about upgrading to Vista, so saying "here, here's a 'new' OS that's somewhere between Vista and 2008, now pay up yet again" would just not work. The effort (see: money) put into that release wouldn't pay itself off.

Now, depending on how well Windows 7 goes, you might see something more along those lines...

I understand that, but how is that problem linked to daniweb - are you saying people should be penalised for posts that others disapprove of (even if they are perfectly harmless). had thought there was a Neg rep facility for that, although I see that facility can be abused.

The problem is the value placed on rep given by new - or at least relatively new - members. Reputation is defines as:

the estimation in which a person or thing is held, esp. by the community

The established community members should be the ones driving one's reputation. If you answer somebody's question, and it was a quick fix (but they obviously hadn't found the answer), that doesn't IMHO deserve any rep. It's when you do something that other members in the community acknowledge that you deserve reputation from those members.

The current situation has ended up where jbennet has tons of reputation for solving typically easy problems. I have nothing against him for that, and AFAIK he's not flaunting it much or begging for more; it's not his fault at all. The problem is in how the reputation system works. It is a nice thing for a newbie to leave you rep when you help them out. You feel appreciated. But when that counts towards your rep points, it skews the perception of how much of an expert you are (again, not saying jbennet isn't because he certainly knows more in certain fields than I do; I'm more referring …

Thanx Dani!

Layout wise, yes. In terms of content, no. And I very much like it that way, kthx.

There have never been plans to merge the two sites.

And may such plans never come to be... :P

Program files isnt where it used to be in vista, i dont think.

E.g in vista My Documents is no longer under /documents and settings , its now under /users , and if you try and go to /documents and settings , you get access denied. It exists only for compatibility with older prorams.

The 'My Documents' tree has been restructured (thankfully), but program files is still under "C:\Program Files" (on most systems).

Not positive, but it's probably a security feature to prevent tampering with anything in the program files directory.

If I were to make a list, it would largely be a subset of John's. That said, here's my list:
* Posting Games
* Lack of interesting content in the Geek's Lounge (I mean, I like the idea of an off-topic forum but this one largely borders on junk)
* Not being able to directly accept CC payments for sponsorship (I'll put up with paypal since I'm nice though :P)
* Tab size for posted code
* Narrow size of site content. One of the best parts of PFO is that the content fills the page (especially when posting code segments, since wrapping code is annoying).

Admittedly, I never knew the site had much embedded advertising until a while after I'd become a sponsor, so the advertising doesn't bother me at all. Yay for Adblock+.

IMO degrees lets the employers know that you are committed to higher education and are trainable. They want to get bang for their buck when they send you to their training folks. You don't ever want to mislead anyone especially an emplyer or you will be going no where fast.

While this may be true for someone starting a career, I'd argue that after a 20-year career in a specific field, the Bachelor's Degree should be a moot point, especially in a trade where one can feasibly make a start without requiring at least 4 years of university. That people that far into a career get passed over for something because of so trivial a reason infers to me that the employer has some issues.

That said, I believe that degrees in History or English (or possibly other liberal arts) are typically easier to acquire; then again, I have no idea if this still holds at an online institution. No idea as to a good online program either.

Yay for thread necromancy :P

If you want to know whether you are actually using your hard disk space as virtual memory or no, just look at the total memory usage -- its its greater than your physical RAM then yes you are using your virtual memory otherwise no.

This is not necessarily correct, as the OS could be aggressively swapping data into a pagefile. This would save time if the memory were later to be swapped out, so long as the page file is up to date.

Anyway, how do you remember such long and jumbled password? I use simple ones like ****** (only lowercase alphabets), and one can easily break it by a dictionary attack. How do you remember that password?

It's easy to remember some passwords if you have a good way to remember them by. Mine is typically 10 to 18 characters, including letters, numbers, and symbols. I just have a couple rules I tend to follow to make it easier to remember. ;)

I don't know about the connectors, but there is a chance that your TV will only output a lower quality image than the Blu-Ray player is sending. In the event that they're on the same page, you're probably set; otherwise, you might need to convert some cables.

Then again, I don't really know... :P

I totally agree with everyone, it is all eye candy but thats not a bad thing. The average user of pc today is mr and ms VANE and they dont give a s**t about usability, they like the bells and whistles.

True, at least at first. I tried that stuff on my laptop about a year, year and a half ago. It got really annoying, so I disabled almost all of the options. Looking back, I ended up quite similar to what Vista has, with some relatively minor differences.

My point was: this is cool, not this will change the world and the computer geeks ability to do more. My hope is that people will see the possbilties of Linux and to do that it first needs to appeal to mr. and ms Vane.

The possibilities I see with Linux are still short of it becoming common in the home. It's making good progress, but it's still a little ways from me presenting it to my parents as an alternative that I don't have to go visit them every couple days to show them how to do something or to undo something they've done.

I would feel so sorry for all the innovative folks at Yahoo.

I hear a lot of them left when the news came out...

Amongst investors Microsoft is considered a pretty stodgy corporation. The lack of innovation certainly is part of that impression.

Oh? Can you be specific about the lack of innovation? There's a lot of people who give Microsoft a lot of credit for being innovative about how their products work, more than coming up with new off-the-wall technologies...

>>If you go all the way to 4GB, remember to use 64-bit Vista
Before you buy it make sure you can get the drivers for it. I tried 64-bit XP for a few hours and removed it due to lack of video and other drivers. Maybe Vista resolves that problem, don't know.

I've had no issues so far, though my hardware is all from post-Vista release. I have an older computer at work that ran it fine (dual Opterons) till one of the CPU fans died. Overall, Vista x64 is a vast improvement over XP. I've not heard of many issues on Vista.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Ok, thanks for the advice. My laptop is an Alienware m5550 w/ 1 gb of ram, but it would be easy to max it out at 4 gb.

If you go all the way to 4GB, remember to use 64-bit Vista (makes upgrading from 32-bit XP not work though, I'm pretty sure). Otherwise you'll only get like 3.5GB of your memory :icon_wink:

I don't like what the last IE upgrade did to Windows.

It changed all of the icons in My Documents so they look like little documents, with the original icon shrunk down so tiny that you can't tell which icon is which. It also fixed things so you can't change the icons back.

Funny, I didn't think IE had anything to do with My Documents anymore...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

You should have received a disc with the computer that would have the appropriate restore functions; there may be a partition with another restore solution, but I've never actually used that so I don't know how it works.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I'm guessing part of the problem is that you're running some memory intensive programs. Most services take relatively little memory (see attached), except some take more if it's available (like the window manager, dwm.exe, for example). I'm pretty sure Macromedia Studio takes a good chunk and I'd guess the same for the other studio. Office is probably a little bit less but still uses a bit. Turning off some services may help, but pinching 4MB processes won't make much difference.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

the 169.254.x.y IP address means you're not getting an IP address from your DHCP server. You can try running ipconfig /renew to see if it renews and gets one properly. This doesn't always work though. Have you tried power cycling your router?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Somewhat hackish, but assuming you don't have a DHCP server at work, you could set your fallback to be your static configuration. At home, you'd get your dynamic IP, at work it would timeout and you'd use the static settings. Might that work?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Things might start to break (e.g. Windows logon service). Seriously, wait and see what the new RAM does.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

AFAICT, most of the services running take relatively little memory. Vista is pretty aggressive in it's use of memory though, so upgrading to 2GB should make a big difference.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

*Can someone tell me why they like VISTA over XP.

Aside from Vista making them more money (at this point, supporting XP would be costing more, since so few people are still buying it), Vista has been fairly dramatically redesigned internally. It is arguably the most secure consumer OS available today (for an interesting but in-depth read on the topic, see here). It also has much better x64 support, allowing users to better benefit from improved hardware architecture.

*How Vista SP1 will be better than the present version?

First, any SP will contain a roll-up of most updates released for that product; this saves a lot of time setting up a new machine. Vista SP1 will also have several performance tweaks/fixes and some changes to other new features (UAC I believe is one of these) that have been pain points for customers.

*Is there any way to get older programs to work with VISTA (ie. I still have MS Office 2000 and it's all I need) other than to run XP and VISTA?

Most 32-bit applications will work in Vista; the exceptions are likely caused by deprecated system calls. How can you tell if a program will work on Vista? Unfortunately, you need to install it and see if it runs. Vista has dropped support for 16-bit programs (which are quite old anyways, but they could run in XP and older OSs through emulation.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

what makes the quadro so expensive

Aside from coming with a min of 1GB (at least, it was the lowest I saw on nVidia's site), it has different hardware optimizations that make commercial uses much more efficient. Whether it's really worth paying 2x as much, I'm not sure, as the average consumer really will be fine with a GeForce card. Most games use a certain couple APIs (DirectX and OpenGL) so the hardware really only needs to support those operations quickly; for other applications, the Quadro probably has a much richer instruction set.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I like IE7 but it has major memory issues - if i have more than 40 tabs open , even with 3gb ram, it lags and crashes.

If you're feeling adventurous, you might try IE8b1 out. Of course, it's still a beta, but I heard they put a lot more effort into performance. b1 performs much better than IE7, and it's still not optimized (that doesn't happen till the final launch usually).
