I work at an engineering company, which uses a special program to print with. The files sent to the printer are massive, taking up to 4 minutes each to compile and send. I have a ThinClient which I hate; probably the most worthless piece of equipment I've purchased in a long time. I am looking for new ways to allow users to print using the server's resources.

My Ultimate Goal: To allow users to connect to our server and utilize it's resources to submit documents to the printer. Restrictions should be in place if direct access to the server is needed.

I am assuming Terminal Services would be the best option for me. I only need one license, and it would be accessible from every computer in the building (generally only one or two people are utilizing the printer to where they would need these resources). With TS I could setup an account with restrictions and whatnot.

What benifits would Citrix have over Terminal Services, if any, taking into consideration the cost difference?

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice in implimenting security for an FTP server we will be hosting in house. What are the main problem areas?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

I am having the same issue on an XP box and have loaded .Net Framework 2.0 and even tried 3.0 and still get the error when installing GPMC that .Net framework is not loaded.

Try searching the microsoft site for .NET 1.1 and install it. My GPMC worked fine after I installed that.

I'm tinkering in the switch here at work and I was wondering if someone could explain jumbo-frame and storm-control? What situations would I need to enable either/both of these?

Hey everyone,

We originally had photoshop 5.0 I think, and then everyone used the upgrade disk to 7.

We're now wanting to take photoshop off all of the computers and install it on one. I have a remote desktop program that allows me to deploy command lines to multiple computers at the same time. Is there a command string I can use to do this?

Thanks in advance

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to logon to our Unix machine through FTP. I can ping the ip of the machine and when I connect through our FTP software I get a Connected to x.x.x.x, waiting for server response.

This didn't seem to be a problem until I joined the computers to our w2k3 domain.

Hey everyone,

I'm still trying to get DNS setup correctly. I decided to pretty much start from scratch and use Microsoft's article 5171. I'm using MyCompany.com as our Domain and I put that in for the DNS as well. All of the other AD folders show up in my Forward Lookup Zone, but not the _MSDCS. What does this do, and how do I get it to show up?

Thanks guys,

:cheesy:

What OS is the computer with the funky hookup running?

Try using a different port on the router. If that doesn't work, log into the router through your web panel and make sure you have the latest firmware installed for it.

Have you tried Linksys tech sup. yet? Probably faster response time.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

If you have a managed switch (which you're going to connect to the wap in order to get Internet to it, I'm assuming) you could just isolate the port on the switch from the other IP schemes.

If you don't have a bu-ku of settings, try holding in the reset button on the firewall for 30 seconds or so to restore the system defaults.... then try accessing it through the web panel

Most Dells come with a utility you can launch when the PC boots. Restart your PC and see if you see something about a diagnostics utility or something to that effect. If not try popping in the Dell cd that came with your pc and reboot again....

When you run it run all the scans and write down the error codes the scan gives you. Then you can call Dell and give them the error codes and they'll tell you exactly what the problem is and the best way to go about fixing it. If no error codes then...

What you might consider is that it's overheating. Make sure the vents are getting enough air.

Hey everyone,

I'm wanting to start a phpBB forum for our youth group but I have no clue how.

Hey guys,

I can't figure out how to apply GPOs without using gpmc. I'm running 64-bit w2k3 and they don't offer gpmc for 64bit. I've tried the security setting "Apply GPO" but no dice. Thanks in advance guys! :cheesy:

Hey guys,

when I logon to our W2k3 DC logon times sometimes take upward of 5 minutes. I'm pretty sure we don't have roaming profiles enabled as everything is blank in the Profile Property page. Even for the client computers to boot up it says applying network settings for around 5 minutes then another 5 minutes to logon. It doesn't act this slow with the administrator account though... Any clue?

I have tried pointing to the DNS ip on the DC. Same problem.

Thanks a bunch in advance! :cheesy:

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Do you have DNS running properly? Maybe check the settings of that....

Also try using the path instead of going through network palces and see if that connects (i.e., \\SERVER4\e\folder)

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

I can't install gpmc because it says some .NET framework is required....

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

:-|Well... heheh

The thing is, the program doesn't actually install (atleast I see no evidence of it, if it does). It's a simple .exe file but when double clicked the program pops up without any installation.

That's crazy about your server.... 16GB of RAM getting swamped. WoW

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Can't you just put a shortcut to the program on the users desktop? Just map the drive the progam is on and create the short cut - should work:!: You could put the program on its own partion or drive to restrict access to the rest of server!:cheesy:

Well we need to make sure the program opens on the server, not the thin client. How would I do that?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Hey guys,

I'm trying to setup a remote computer to logon through RD to our server to run a printing program (we did this, because the printer takes a while and we figure our server will do it faster).

I've set the group policy to allow log on through terminal services and i've setup the Domain controller policy to do the same. I can't figure out where to apply the group policy or to see if it is applied. I'm not sure if i even need to, because I set the policy for the particular user.

Anyways, I'm wanting to do this because I'm later going to setup VERY restrictive policies and let them logon to our server rather than paying $1500 for citrix.

Advance thank yous...... ;)

Microsoft's Cryptography Service is one of the more invisible and less widely-discussed services in Windows 2000 and XP. It is also one of the more important, as it provides a broad variety of services to Windows: encoding and decoding files stored in encrypted folders, for instance, or affirming that digital signatures are in fact valid.
The latter is actually one of the most important "silent" functions in Windows, since digital signatures are used to sign device drivers, applications and other Windows executables. A system patched with Windows XP Service Pack 2, for instance, is designed to warn the user if the system tries to run application without an appropriate signature. This could be an ActiveX control, an installer for a device driver or application, a Windows Update download or an encryption certificate.
If the Cryptography service is disabled, either manually or through a Group Policy operation, or its support files are damaged, a great variety of things can go wrong. Application installs may fail with a warning that the integrity of a file could not be verified or that it has not passed Windows Logo testing, that a digital signature could not be found, or that a package was not signed properly.

  1. If the problem is that new certificates cannot be added, the Trusted Publishers Lockdown policy may be in effect. This …

the site works find when we use a dns server with a name other than ourcompany.com

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

alrighty, thanks a bunch! I've been doing this on a turn-by-turn basis so far... working good. The only problem I've ran into is that now the GP i apply do not affect them.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

hmmm... I can't find that. PowerUsers isn't a built in group on the DC

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

Ok, so there's not a gp I can set domain wide to allow installation of programs? It has to be on the local machine?

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

We're having an issue here with installing new programs. I set everyone us with very limited changes to the default gp and applied it to the group. Noone can install programs now... The only policy change I set that I can think of that might have affected this is a couple pertaining to editing the registry. Are there specific policies to enable to allow installation of programs on their machines?

Also, has anyone found anything out about the GPMC not installing on our DC. It says something about .net must be installed but neither 2.0 or 1.1 work.

Duki 552 Nearly a Posting Virtuoso

btw.

i appreciate alllllll of your help... thanks a bunch!

I'm getting ready to leave work and here's what happened:

I was backing up my supervisor's Outlook data and after that finished the laptop became very slow. I tried to open AutoCad to determine if our licenses were still working because I had ran into an issue on the 3rd floor. The computer ended up locking up... so I reboot. Now all that comes up is System disk read error - press control+alt+del to restart
