I think this happened due to their recent change of algorithm.

well this is not about algorithm google just slightly changed the theme gave it an elegant look better then previous one

Is true, the change is in the layer but I think that the algorithm is the same.

yes , google's look has changed. The background of upper strip (where link to orkut, images, maps, etc.) has become black.
