Several replies in this thread touched the right points — , , and all flagged overlap between the ideas — but the mix of answers left practical gaps. The clearest way to think about it is as two complementary disciplines: one focuses on making social content and profiles work harder without direct ad spend; the other organizes paid, earned and owned activity to hit measurable marketing goals. Below is a concise, action-focused separation and a short checklist for applying both.

SMO (Social Media Optimization) is the owned-content side: the practical work that makes posts and pages easier to find, share and convert. Typical SMO tasks include optimizing profile bios and link placement, formatting posts and thumbnails for each network, adding Open Graph/Twitter Card metadata to site pages so shares render correctly, building simple share CTAs, and creating repeatable content templates that encourage resharing. Track organic referral traffic, share/reshare rate, engagement per post and amplification rate as primary SMO signals.

SMM (Social Media Marketing) is the wider marketing practice that uses social channels (owned, earned and paid) to reach objectives. It covers paid campaigns, audience segmentation and targeting, creative and landing‑page testing, influencer/partner programs and social commerce. SMM’s focus is scalable reach and conversion: measure reach/impressions, CTR, CPC, CPA, ROAS and downstream LTV for social cohorts.

Practical checklist and cautions: start with the objective (awareness, leads, sales), then allocate effort — invest SMO to lower acquisition cost and improve conversion once traffic arrives; use SMM to scale and test winning creative. Implement UTM tagging so social activity ties to analytics and conversions. As warned, social profiles can sometimes outrank sites — prevent unwanted outcomes by linking social bios to canonical landing pages and keeping the main site authoritative. Avoid buying followers and chasing vanity metrics; align social activity with site SEO and conversion funnels so both SMO and SMM reinforce business outcomes.

Although wikipedia gives them both very similar definitions they are slightly different and as trends and strategies change those definitions will continue to change. In way they are both just buzz words being used by alot of Companies to show that they are knowledgeable in the social media niche of online marketing.

Social Media Optimization for me is more about optimizing a social media page about a website, brand, company, etc. to maximize their exposure both organically through followers, shared content, and in the eyes of search engines. The latter being sometimes a concern if my Company isn't involved in the marketing strategies of the website itself as we have had Clients Social Media sites outrank their own website in the SERPs. The goal with SMO is really to drive as much traffic to the conversion point as possible.

Social Media Marketing for me is two fold; the first is working with Clients to develop and effectively manage PPC advertising programs on the social media channel(s) that are most likely to have the highest ROI for that Client. The second part of SMM for me is actually convincing social media users that the product, service, Company, etc. is actually being presented to them through a reliable/trustworthy source and not directly from the Company. Basically taking a bandwagon approach to try and generate new leads, or in layman terms: if all my friends are doing this, then maybe I should be too! Which then equals more leads = more conversions.

Davey Winder just made an excellent post about a week ago on how he sees Social Media Optimization; its worth a good read and I'm sure by using google you could find a ton of other resources to help guide you:
