A few practical, prioritized steps to try before buying a replacement board.

Short note: ’s warranty suggestion is the right first move if the machine is still covered. Because an audible electrical failure on plug‑in can mean the adapter or internal power stage has failed, do not use that charger again until you check it — a popped adapter can be a fire/electrical hazard. (techwalla.com)

Checklist (do these in order):

  • Visually inspect the brick and cable for burn marks, swelling or a smell of burning. If present, stop using the adapter.
  • Measure the adapter with a digital multimeter (DC volts): red probe to the center pin, black to the outer sleeve. The D610 family uses a ~19–20V adapter (90W/4.6A class); a correct reading here rules the brick in or out. If you see zero or a large deviation, the adapter is bad. (notebookparts.com)
  • Try a known‑good, compatible D610 adapter if you can borrow one. Test: AC only (battery removed), battery only (with AC disconnected), then AC + battery. If nothing powers up, perform a power drain (hard reset) per Dell instructions: remove AC and battery, hold the power button 20–30 seconds, then reconnect and test. (dell.com)

If the adapter checks out but the laptop still won’t power, the DC‑in stage or power regulation on the system board is the likely culprit. On the D610 the DC jack is soldered to the system board, so replacing the jack means removing the board or replacing the board — not usually a simple plug‑in part. The service manual and repair guides show system‑board removal and the jack location. (ifixit.com)

Practical next steps: if under warranty, contact Dell as suggested. If out of warranty, get a written quote from a local repair shop for either re‑soldering the jack or replacing the D610 (PP11L) system board; compare that to the cost of a used board. Above all, replace any adapter that “banged” before doing further testing — it may be the root fault. (dell.com)

Hi,
If your machine is under warranty it is best not to look too far. The sound of a "bang" and then it not working sounds like something has literally blown up. If under warranty, get it back to Dell, if not, I would suggest a small computer repair shop where you may get a free quote to repair.
