When I power on my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pa) the screen turns grey and after a couple of seconds vertical lines of random color start to appear all over the screen. They change their color constantly. External monitor works just fine (through VGA connection).

I disassembled the laptop and checked the data cable that connects LCD and motherboard. I checked every single wire in the cable (rungup with my multimeter) and the cable is absolutely fine (I made a simple pinout schematics). Cable has a sticker: PTT50 LCD CABLE ONE, P/N: 22-12-023-70, CNJS: 2008 (some chinese? characters).

  • Verify when the stripes appear (during POST/BIOS vs only after OS loads). If they show before any driver/OS activity, the problem is in the display assembly (cable, T-CON, or panel), not the GPU.
  • Do a hinge/“wiggle” test while the machine is on and displaying the stripes. If the pattern changes when you move the lid, suspect the LVDS/eDP cable or its strain area near the hinge. Static continuity can miss hairline breaks; flexing often reveals them.
  • Power down, remove battery/AC and carefully reseat both ends of the display cable (motherboard and the flat-ribbon at the LCD). Inspect for bent pins, corrosion, torn shielding, or damaged tape behind the hinge — common failure points.
  • Inspect the LCD’s T-CON board (small PCB at the panel edge) for burned components or loose ribbon connectors. Vertical, color-changing stripes are frequently T-CON or panel column-driver failures; horizontal bands or intermittent issues are more often cable/connector related.
  • Replace the LVDS/eDP cable first (cheapest and most likely fix if wiggle testing alters the artifact). If a replacement cable doesn’t help, the T-CON or the panel itself is the next candidate.

Safety note: always unplug AC and remove the battery before probing connectors; if the panel uses CCFL backlight, avoid touching the inverter and cabling. If you’re not comfortable with disassembly, a local repair shop can test a spare cable/panel quickly.

The problem seems like hardware related. You need to take a hardware check up for the Laptop.
