I think I might have unplugged the laptop while it was on (the battery is dead, so I always have to have it plugged in).

Now, every time I boot it and a window is open, the on-screen image is very small (about 2 inches by 4 inches and the rest of the screen is black). The resoltuion is very low and the menu options are truncated. I need to restore the original settings. Can someone help?

THANKS!

— abrupt loss of power can leave the graphics subsystem in a low-resolution/centered mode or corrupt the display driver/profile. The quickest way forward is to try recovery steps that distinguish software from hardware causes.

  • Power-cycle fully: shut down, unplug AC, remove the battery (if removable), hold the power button 20-30 seconds, then plug AC back in and boot.
  • Try safe boot / last-known-good: reboot and press F8 (before Windows starts). First try "Last Known Good Configuration"; if that fails, boot into "Safe Mode". If Safe Mode shows a normal full-screen desktop, the problem is almost certainly the display driver or Windows settings.
  • If you can use the keyboard to reach settings: press Windows+R, type desk.cpl and Enter to open Display Properties. Use Tab and the arrow keys to move to Settings and change the resolution to the panel's native value. If dialog boxes are truncated, press Alt+Space then X to maximize, or use Tab/Enter to select menu items.
  • In Safe Mode, open Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), uninstall the display adapter, reboot and let Windows reload the driver; then download the correct VAIO video driver for the exact model from Sony and install it.
  • If an external monitor via VGA/HDMI shows a correct, full-screen image while the internal panel still shows the small centered picture, suspect the LVDS cable, inverter, or panel hardware and consider service.

Back up important data before making driver changes. If the above does not restore normal display, the next step is professional diagnosis to avoid unnecessary parts replacement.

Anyone have any ideas? It still is in this weird small condensed screen image in super low resolution. I tried to restore the setting but the drop down menu is truncated so I'm missing the one I need.

Can anyone help me?????
