i just got a new mic (headset) for my computer (i use windows vista) and i can hear fine out of them but it does not detect my voice. i have searched on many forums and it says about all the settings and i have checked all them over and over again. i then thought the mic may be faulty so i tried a different one and exactly the same problem. can anyone help?

I had a similar problem. I have onboard sound - meaning the audio is on the motherboard (pretty typical these days).

To solve my problem, I went to: Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Settings.

In there I adjusted the Speakers to Desktop Speakers and it started working. Apparently, having it configured for 5.x Surround disabled the mic port (for inbound).

Maybe something similar is going on for you?
