Hey,

I got a gmail account lately and tried to log in on msn messenger and it doesn't work. Many of my friends did it but it doesn't work with me. Does anyone know what is the problem?

thx in advance,

Mat

Short practical note: was on the right track — the original problem was that MSN/Passport requires a Microsoft sign-in, and you can register a Microsoft account using an existing Gmail address rather than a Hotmail/Outlook address. That Microsoft account is a separate identity, so the password and verification are handled by Microsoft (not Gmail). (learn.microsoft.com)

If someone registers but still can’t sign in (examples from the thread like ), the usual causes are: the Microsoft account wasn’t verified (check spam for the confirmation code), the account is temporarily blocked by Microsoft security, or the wrong sign‑in alias/password is being used. First verify you can sign in to your Microsoft account on the web — that confirms the account and password work before trying an IM client. If verification codes don’t arrive or sign‑in is blocked, follow Microsoft’s sign‑in helper and verification troubleshooting guidance. (support.microsoft.com)

For the “works on my PC but not others” case raised by , try these quick checks: clear any saved Messenger credentials on the other PC and re-enter the full Microsoft email address; disable any firewall/proxy that might block the client; and make sure you’re using a supported (or updated) client — older clients sometimes behave inconsistently when aliases or primary sign‑in names change. If you changed the Passport/alias (as did) older Messenger clients could treat that as a different identity; modern Microsoft accounts support aliases and changing a primary alias is handled differently today. (support.microsoft.com)

One final point for anyone landing here years later: MSN/Windows Live Messenger is legacy — Microsoft migrated Messenger sign‑ins into Skype back in 2013 — so for current use manage credentials on your Microsoft Account and use current clients/services rather than chasing old Messenger behavior. I think if you are using a Hotmail address you automatically get registered with a Passport account (which is necessary for using MSN Messenger), but if you use an email address which isn't from MS (such as Gmail) you have to register for a Passport account manually. I might be horribly wrong about that, but take a look here and see if it helps at all:

Or try and see if there is anything relavent in their help section.

Good luck.

You were right, it worked !!! :D

No problem ;)

1. Go to

2. Click on the "Register for your free .NET passport today!" thing on the top right.

3. Fill in the form, using your Gmail address for the email address box. I think you need to use your Gmail password, too.

4. I think that about does it! You should now be able to sign into MSN Messenger using your Gmail account.

Yea i think i have a similar problem... i can log into msn messenger with my gmail account on my own pc which i registered for a .net passport on, but i cant log in using any other pc... does this have something to do with the .net passport thing?? Any help is greatly appreciated as i am always wanting to use messenger on other pc's, thanx!!

since i changed the email address of my .net passport, msn messenger won't show who of my contacts are online anymore... my friends have to re-add my address again and again to their msn contacts!

do you know a solution to that problem or should i quit msn?

Um do you know how to change your password because I changed it on gmail but it won't change on my MSN... :S

You need to change it here:

log in then click Settings, then under Account security select Password
