Brief expert note: there are two separate things to troubleshoot — (A) why setup never asked for a product key, and (B) why the fresh XP install shows missing/corrupt DLLs. both symptoms can be related (preconfigured install media) or they can be independent (bad media/hardware or malware). read and try the short plan below, then post back the exact missing DLL names, the laptop make/model, and whether you used a manufacturer recovery disc or a standard retail XP CD (as requested).

Why setup might skip the key

  • Many XP install images support unattended installs. an unattended file on the media (for XP this is typically an i386\winnt.sif or other unattended file) can contain a ProductKey= entry and so setup will never prompt. factory recovery images from the laptop maker are also often preconfigured and will not ask for a key. inspect the installation media on another PC and search for winnt.sif or $OEM$ folders; if you find an unattended file you can confirm the ProductKey line there.

Common causes of post‑install DLL errors and how to check

  • Corrupt or scratched installation media, a failing optical drive, or a bad burn can install damaged files. bad RAM or bad sectors on the hard disk will also produce corrupted system files. malware that infected the source image or the drive can do the same. quick diagnostic steps: try the install media on a different machine or borrow a known‑good retail XP disc; run a full disk check and the system file checker from the recovery environment.

Useful commands and quick checks

chkdsk c: /r
sfc /scannow (run inside the installed XP, needs CD)

Also boot a memtest (memtest86) for at least one full pass and run the HDD vendor’s SMART/diagnostic tool.

Suggested action plan (in order)

  1. Back up personal files.
  2. Verify the CD on another PC or try a different known‑good XP CD.
  3. If the media is confirmed good, run memtest and HDD diagnostics.
  4. If hardware is OK, do a clean retail install (or factory restore from vendor media), then install drivers and run sfc /scannow.
If problems persist, report exact DLL names and any setup log lines you can copy so helpers here (and @ankitbiz, @caperjack, @Automatically) can give targeted next steps.

I use original windows that was with my laptop when I bought it.

The number is not necessary in many cases.
Is the computer working?

ok, so did you go to mycomputer and check to see if it was legit ,if its legit don't worry about it not asking for the key

Hi My computer is working but in some softwares like cade havw peroblem and so I installed before and asked me about the serial why now dont ask me?

Hi Zahra,

Im confused. Did you get rid of your problem with the dll errors? Did your windows XP install from a clean and formatted partition? You will continue to have these problems because I believe even though you have tried installing several times all you are doing is overwriting the old windows system files and you wont have to put in your serial because the current install already has this information.

When you install from the cd, you will be prompted to reformat your partition. instead of just clicking and saying yes reformat with ntfs/ quick format etc. Please delete that partition, I believe you need to hit D, then L to confirm. then you have the option to create a new fresh partition from the hard disk space. Let us know what happens.
