When I try to view my pictures I just get a photo silouette of mountains and water in my thumbnails. I have to click on each photo thumbnail to see what the photo actually is. Can anyone tell me how to change this to show my actual photo thumbnails?

I don't have Vista but this works in Windows7. Go to the Control Panel, look for Folder Options, click on the View tab. Under Advanced Settings if there is a check in the box before the line Always Show Icons, never Thumbnails, remove it.
