A concise troubleshooting path for the HP DV6 situation reported by , building on the suggestion to post visible error messages () and the BIOS check idea (). Because this is the third drive put into the same laptop, separate hardware faults (cable, connector, SATA controller) from software/boot issues before buying another disk.

Try these checks in order:

  • Power-reset the machine: remove battery and AC, hold power 15 seconds, reconnect AC and try to boot.
  • Enter BIOS/UEFI: confirm the drive is listed and that the boot order points to it. If not listed, suspect a hardware fault.
  • Reseat the drive and inspect the connector for bent pins, debris, or damage. Laptop SATA connectors can fail.
  • Test the drive on another PC with a USB-SATA adapter or put a known-good drive in the laptop to see if it boots. This isolates the drive vs. the laptop.
  • Boot from a Windows install or Linux live USB to see if the OS on the disk is reachable and to copy important files off the disk first.

If the disk is detected but Windows will not start, run startup repair and these commands from Repair -> Command Prompt (Windows recovery media):

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd
chkdsk C: /f /r

Run SMART/diagnostics on the drive before replacing it. If multiple drives fail in the same laptop, consider motherboard/SATA power issues or heat/voltage problems and get a qualified technician to inspect the logic board. For replacements, use the correct 2.5" SATA form factor (thickness matters) or an SSD upgrade; obtain parts from HP parts/resellers or reputable vendors. Back up any recoverable data before running repairs.
