Since already confirmed the display‑picture option and a repair install were tried, and reports the same symptom, the next things to rule out are client behaviour, a corrupted local cache, or something on the network (firewall/proxy/AV) preventing the client from downloading avatars or updating profile data.

Some Messenger 7.x/8.x builds only download a contact’s “user tile” when a conversation socket opens (or when the contact list is switched to “Show details”), so a blank icon in the list can be normal until a chat window is opened. This behaviour and related version differences were widely reported around the 7.5/8.0 era. (forums.whirlpool.net.au)

A common and fixable cause is a corrupted local cache. Messenger stores downloaded content in the per‑account AppData/Local Settings area (the ObjectStore/UserTile folder); files often appear with a .dt2 extension and can be renamed to .jpg to view them. Back up the Messenger folder, exit the client completely, then move/rename the account folder (examples below) so Messenger creates a fresh cache on next sign‑in:

  • XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<WindowsUser>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<accountID>\ObjectStore\UserTile
  • Vista/7+: C:\Users\<WindowsUser>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\<accountID>\ObjectStore\UserTile

After backing up, delete or move the UserTile files and sign in again — the client should re‑fetch pictures. Always show hidden files and back up before deleting. (avforums.com)

If clearing the cache doesn’t help, check for anything blocking HTTP/HTTPS requests (third‑party firewall, AV content‑filtering, or a proxy that requires authentication). Messenger contacts and user tiles are fetched from MSN/Windows Live endpoints (e.g. storage.msn.com / rad.msn.com), so a blocked connection or proxy auth failure can stop downloads; either add Messenger to the firewall/AV exception list or test briefly with those protections disabled. If the problem persists, test under a fresh Windows user profile to rule out a corrupt Windows profile, or try a different Messenger build. (forums.overclockers.com.au)

Go to Tools -- Options -- General -- Check "show display pictures from others" ...

i have done that and they still wont display..and now it never changes my personal message, even though i already have

Can you reinstall msn messenger .. I mean without uninstalling it, install it again n it'll do a repair install .. see if the problem is solved or not.

I have the same problem and done all of the above and nothing seems to work. People can see my picture, its not a real big problem really but it just annoys me when things dont work as they should.
