As I said, I'm using an AMD Athlon XP as well, so it might be an AMD problem. In any case, the computer seems to be screwed up in other ways too ... as of yesterday I haven't even been able to get into Windows. I don't have the patience right now to deal with it (the tower is also making a grinding noise - possibly the fan, I don't know - which is scaring me when I even turn the machine on right now).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Let's get ourselves back on track here. This thread started as trying to figure out why oh why my computer keeps restarting, which it still is doing. In fact, I bought Wheel of Fortune 2003, and my computer restarts halfway through the first round every single time! I can't play the game!!

In any case, let me go over Donk's suggestions. I am not sure if ACPI is disabled in the BIOS, but I'll check in a lil bit. I know that I don't let WinXP go into hibernate or sleep mode, but the monitor DOES go off after an hour of being idle. (From what I recall, the video card drivers take care of this).

Yeap, AGP is set to 4x, which is what my card is.

I hate playing around with "msconfig" disabling services and proggies that load on startup, but I'll take it into consideration as a last resort.

Thank you very much!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Quite unfortunately, my laptop does. But it's a few years old already. 'Nuf said.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's a computer I built based on an AMD Athlon XP 1900+. Nothing in the system has changed except for the video card and a reformat (don't recall installing anything new or different although I might've), and it worked perfectly before the new card. Nope, no onboard video.

Right now it's constantly restarting itself, down to the point where it's barely functional. But I just bought a new processor and motherboard which are being delivered next week. So I'm not toooooo worried until I put the video card in the new "system" and see if it works. Only a week to go!

Hopefully it's not the card!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The maker is Asylum (weird brand). Nope, just this PC since I reformatted and installed the card.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nvidia won't help me either. I'm using some off brand manufacturer for the vcard. Nvidia is only driver-related. They'll just say to call the card manufacturer.

Aside from that, I'm still not perfectly sure that the video card is the problem at all. As I said, it started happening when I reformatted.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Doesn't just happen w/ DirectX. Happens all the time ... sometimes just when browsing the web! Happens more often when gaming though.

Yes, XP SP1. The latest version of DirectX. The latest GeForce drivers. :( I think I ran out of ideas ... it is the video card, isn't it? ugh

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

About 3 weeks ago I got a new video card, an Nvidia Geforce 4 ti, made by Asylum (basically an unknown brand). At the same time as I installed it, I reformatted my computer. This all happened less than a week after Nvidia released new DetonatorXP drivers.

So I reformatted. And I reinstalled WinXP. And I installed these new Nvidia drivers. And since then my computer has periodically been just restarting itself due to a "bugcheck". Sometimes this happens when I'm in DirectX applications, while other times it's when I'm multitasking a lot. I kept thinking it was the latest drivers and that they were buggy or something. I really didn't have time to play around or tweak because I was very very busy with school and other stuff.

I just downgraded to the standard windows Nvidia drivers, and still the same thing. Which is making me think that it's the actual card. It seems like it's a bit too late to try for a refund or exchange. Do you think it could be anything else? (e.g. maybe just a bad Windows intall? Other software conflicts? etc)

When I go into the Event Manager it says "the computer has rebooted from a bugcheck" but nothing more detailed. Any ideas?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Note: often used in the plural. Goodness gracious this is sorta getting rather dumb now.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ugh. You people all suck! Making fun of me! LOL  Note to the wise - pajamas are plural! I put on my pajamas ... not a pajama. ;) hehe

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

C++ and VB are two totally different animals. Do you want to get into the .NET archetecture? Hmm ... I'm not really a book person, I just look for a bunch of tutorials on the www. I go to www.cplusplus.com a lot but it's not really a beginner's site.

Pretty soon I'll be posting my intro to programming tutorials up here, so I'm sure those will be a help to you.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Just for Dan ... ;)

The 3D look is now optional. If you're a member, you can go into your profile and switch from the 3d look to the flat look.

Just a note ... the same html templates are being used for both. The ONLY thing that changes is the .css file that you're using.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The more professional look is what I was aiming for. However, in the process I think I might've turned the site a bit stale and boring. I'm trying to spruce it up with a few touches of flash. Any ideas?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Here at TechTalk, seems we're going through different styles and overhauls like water. I just can't seem to find one I'm happy with!

The last 3d grey one was very flashy and very stylish ... but a bit too cluttered for my taste. Plus, it sorta did resemble a warez site!

I'm trying for a more professional look here. Who knows whether it'll last, but I'm definitely happy with it so far! Yes, I know it's bland ... but not for long. Eventually wanna add a bit of flash animation to it. Maybe spice it up a bit.

Hofstra, for one, uses Novell for the computers in their business department. Their computer science, math, and engineering departments are Sun-based (running Solaris, a UNIX variant).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm just sad that Sun's stock keeps going down. I bought a few shares awhile back.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I read about this once awhile ago, but it was in a Linux magazine, so basically comparing different server technologies from the open source standpoint. So that, alone, is biased. doh

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I don't want to agree with Jimmy, but I do to an extent. Novell seems (from my point of view, anyway) that it used to be a lot more popular than it is today. I don't hear very much about it anymore. Big corporations use it, but for the most part, people needing a server find Unix or Windows 2K to be more convenient.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

What was confusing me, going back a few years ago, is that my data structures programming professor didn't even mention templates. Another professor, however, was making everyone use them right off the bat just for the simple HELLO WORLD application.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

YES! Thank you so much ;)
A big help

Do you know if this applies to straight C also?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nope :( I'm still clueless. I haven't had a need for them so it sorta wandered to the back of my mind. But it would still be great if someone could just fill me in a bit.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Any luck finding them?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So are you gonna? I need to put the C++ tutorials I wrote on this site.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You might find this a bit silly, but could someone please explain to me how to do C++ templates? I know they're very simple ... I just never learned them nor ever had a teacher who taught them or even made mention of them.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

aww hehe

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

As in my signature, CSCGAL stands for Computer SCience gal. I just finished my junior year at Hofstra University for a B.S. in Computer Science and a minor in BCIS (Business Computer Info Systems)

BTW thank you for the compliment!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Attached is a small C++ program I wrote for an Algorithms and Data Structures class (CSC120 at Hofstra University).

It takes grocery items from a text file and puts them into a hash table. The user can add, delete, and edit items in the hash table. Upon exiting the program, the text file is updated.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Is that sorta like that thingie you use at work? How the different majors can have homepages under Hofstra U?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Very cool - I just spent the last few mins browsing the site.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm ... when did *I* start learning HTML? Back in the day ... in 9th grade when I got my first dog I made an AOL page all about her with information about the breed. The site just expanded into daniweb.com, which was my first real experience at any sorta web site creation thingie (I don't even think it deserves to be called web design or web dev).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Very cool Jimmy ... know where you're gonna work? Something in the computer field?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ooooh... thanky! Even though it's technically not my birthday anymore. But very kewl anywayz ... turned 20 "yesterday"! (the 11th)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey peeps! Me and Dan are doing a group project on "Corporate Training" for a multimedia class we're in. Dan didn't come to class today :P when the rest of the group here assigned out individual topics to research. My topic is "latest technologies"

Can anyone help out? What are some latest technologies which might be incorporated in the business world to train their employees ...

how about that laser pen, handheld mouse for powerpoint presentations ... any other ideas??

BTW ... Dan, if you happen to read this before the next time you come to class, I volunteered you to design the graphics for the website and the two of us are going to focus on the web design.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Whew! My first day on a road to recovery. Even with pain killers, it's my first day that I am actually able to sorta concentrate!! Golly gee whiz am I happy! hehe Definitely a day well-deserving of being marked in the calendar!!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ok my turn !!!

My sophomore year of college I decided to get customized plates for my car. And I was hangin' out in the CSC lounge trying to think of something, and Vinnie and someone else (forget who) were naming random stuff and were like "Hey, how 'bout CSCGAL" as a complete joke and I was like "I like it!"

So I got CSCGAL plates for my car and everyone laughed at me from then on. Seriously ... the plates came first. Then I decided to start using "cscgal" for everything on the 'net.

Then when I originally set up TechTalk Forums I had my handle set to "cscgal" ... and Dan was like "hey, can't you be more creative?" So I changed it to "TechTalkGal" as a joke.

Just recently switched back to cscgal - hey, it's meee!

This topic took a real weird turn to a debate about RedHat 8, so I split it off into a separate topic entitled "RedHat 8"

[thread]378[/thread]

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

No prob ... I was almost positive they were gone for good anyways. It's a similar scenerio to lets say you use Network Neighborhood to delete files off a remote pc. They are permanently deleted - not in either recycle bin. It was the same thing only the remote pc was a Linux box.

Oh well.

In any case ... I'm just havin' a good ol' time playing around with RedHat 8. Quick question though ... does anyone know why KPackage doesn't come with KDE for RedHat 8? It's included with all previous versions?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey kaynine, thanx for the reply ... but (unfortunately) I couldnt find the answer anywhere :( . I ended up reformatting the Linux box last night anyway (so it doesn't even matter anymore).

First thing's first ... those files weren't ultra important b/c they were ... how should I say ... warez ;)

The box was running RedHat 7.3 and I figured I might as well upgrade to Redhat 8 ... so I did an upgrade. But a lot of the underlying structure changed, and it screwed a lot of proggies I already had installed up. So I figured I'd do a nice clean install with RedHat 8.

(I know, I know ... Linux is supposed to last, but, eh ... oh well!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I was just moving some stuff around on my Windows XP machine. So that I wouldn't run out of room moving between partitions, I moved a bunch of stuff to a Samba share on my Linux machine (via My Network Places in WinXP).

I had thought I had moved the files back and deleted them off the Linux box via My Network Places. But -- oops! -- I hadn't finished moving them. Therefore, I lost half my files.

Now my question ... does Linux by any chance put these files in a trash folder or something, or are they gone forever?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

open Microsoft Outlook
go to tools menu on the top and click on Options
go to the "Other" tab
at the bottom, disable check for "Enable Instant Messaging in Microsoft Outlook"

not sure how to do it in Outlook Express
personally I think it's cool that O.E. integrates with both MSN and AIM
must have been a part of their agreement w/ the justice dep't

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

This started happening to me again, but this time for a different reason. Outlook likes to integrate itself with Windows Messenger. But I use MSN Messenger so I completely disabled Windows Messenger. So Outlook spends forever trying to look for it. You gotta go into preferences and turn off the integration with your MSN Contacts. That did the trick for me, anyhow!

BTW I like Outlook Express better than Outlook too! I think the design and layout are nicer. But maybe that's just me!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I figured it out ... I just needed to go to Windows Update and download the latest release of the .NET Framework - all works now :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I just reformatted my computer (Win XP Pro). Everything runs smoothly except Outlook XP or Outlook Express. Everytime I open either one, it takes a solid two minutes for the splash screen to go away for the rest of the proggie to open. Every other program works perfectly fine (e.g. Word XP, etc etc)

As I said, it's a fresh install. Any ideas?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's 4:30 am and why oh why am I still awake ?!
In any case ... I also have to fix up the chat thingie on the index page ... it incorrectly prints out the usernames of the peeps currently in the room.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Doing work now ... but hopefully tomorrow I'll get around to fixing the Jumpbox so it actually works (for a change) on all the pages!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

nevah mind ... got it all figured out :P

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey, peeps ...

Any comp sci ppl out there in internet land?

I'm trying to do my CSC110 homework but because of my car accident I wasn't in class for the last 2 lectures. I was wondering of someone might be able to give me a hand with minterms, maxterms, and canonical sums and products.

Anyone know this stuff?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ok peeps! The polls have been fixed! For the last few days I didn't realize that no one could vote on any of the polls. I looked over the code and forgot to close my </form> tag. Oopsies!
