Congratulations, Tekmaven, our newest Global Moderator. Tekmaven has been with us since the beginning and has done a great job! Kudos to both global moderators, Tekmaven and inscissor. Kudos should also go out to our other moderators, MAD_DOG and AlPhA !! :D

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I moved the Novell topic from the Networking category to the OS Tech Support section. Hopefully it'll fit in better here!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

One more reason I just thought of ... the board index was wayyyy toooo long and I hated having to scroll down to get to the Info Center - from all I've read about web design (and I may be wrong) the Index page is supposed to be short and sweet, and "portal out" (if that makes sense) to all the other pages and sections of the site.

BTW, this *IS* my humble attempt at recruiting you guys over to my side. 'Cuz if I can't, I just might have to go back to the old way of doing things! (It would be horrible if two of the main supporters of this board hated the layout)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm ... are me and Tekmaven the only two who are in love with it? (Well, actually I can't speak for him, although he did say he really liked it - but I actually like the portal style.) The colors definitely need to be played around with a bit though.

So far aeinstein and inscissor both - well - would prefer the old style, to say the least. What to do, what to do ... for now I think I really want to keep the portal style - if not for anything else other than I want to add other sections to the site and make a homepage with easy access to all of them. For example, it still needs some tweaking, but there's now a downloads section ;) (where you can download some old C++ code I've written for school, Java coming soon! In any case - all the code is academia-based)

In addition, there was always a calendar where people could post events and link them to threads in the forum, but no one seemed to se it. With the new monthly calendar block ovre to the left, perhaps more people will start taking advantage.

Another thing I like about the portal style is that from every page you can see recently updated topics and who's currently online. (I used to always rush back to the Info Center on the index page for that information.)

My next short-term goal is moving the Info Center …

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

New portal set up! This is a replacement for Tekmaven's post about the topic, which unfortunately got lost when we had a scare and I had to restore an older version of the database.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Woo hoo! I was able to restore a back-up of TechTalk Forums ... we lost a few messages though :o (sorry about that) The back-up was from early yesterday and we lost about 10 posts. Not too bad!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

ok ... got it! In that bash config thingie file (more specifically, the last line of .bash_profile) in my home directory ... I just typed /usr/games/fortune and it worked :)

My problem now is trying to figure out these really stupid, corny jokes. I *would* say they just went over my head, but everyone I ask doesn't have a clue what they mean either. Oh well!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I want to set up the ever popular fortune program to display a random fortune each time a user logs in. The program is installed, but which config file do I need to edit to get the program to automatically run after each successful login?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

heh - niiice ...
btw, if you're having a problem getting the forum to recognize a full link, surround it in

http://blah

This way the link doesn't break off before the URL ends

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nice to see you figured the problem out so quickly - kewl!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Ithink the official name is Windows.NET Server 2003...

So it's a 100% server OS, right? ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I heard it won't be called Windows .NET anymore? Now it's server 2003 or something?

In any case, just curious, is this a complete server operating system only? (e.g. upgrade from Win2K Advanced server, terminal server, etc) Not an upgrade to XP, right?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sorry I'm soooooo late with a reply ...... figure out the problem yet? Have you checked NVidia's site for the latest Detonator drivers.

Other than that ... check for NVidia-related patches for the games themselves

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

You say that it gives this problem under multiple environments? What do you mean by that? Has the system ever ran Linux? Win2000, WinXP, etc etc?

A lot of times problems with random restarts are either related to bad memory (RAM) or the video card drivers. (I've experienced this due to both).

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Dan, I'd wait until it becomes "official" - yes it's on the MS servers now, but it still isn't public yet

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

eh, it's not "official" yet ... I think I'm going to wait till it comes up on Windoze Update

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

BRB - gotta go upgrade my Win2k pc!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Okay, so this forum uses PHP with MySQL... I have access to PHPMyAdmin on a remote server. I have been making periodic back-ups (dumps of the tables) but I'm always afraid that when I need them most, they'll fail on me. There isn't by any chance an easier way to back-up an sql database in linux, right? I have ssh access.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm ... in answer to whether the site downloads faster now ... a lot of the lil images/logos were replaced by text links. Plus, Although the forum body is still nested within tables, their structures are a lot simpler than what I had before (with the left aligning and grey right hand side and all that). Dan's logo is ~30K though, but once your browser loads it on the index it's cached from there on in

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Sunday night I pulled an all-nighter (I didn't sleep *at all*) and I redid all of the categories. For example, in the tech support section I used to have Windows98, Windows 2k, WinXP, etc etc ... I condensed them all into just "Windows" ... in the programming section I combined the UNIX, perl, and shell script categories.

No posts have been lost ... I just condensed. I never got rid of the links categories? What probably happened was you just caught the site in the middle of the upgrade when everything was still all screwed around.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

btw ...

THANK YOU INSCISSOR FOR OUR NEW LOGO!! ;D

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Duhhh we have a new look :P (Hard not to notice hehe)
It's 5am as I'm writing this and I haven't slept yet, so I'm going to try and make this brief.

tell me whatcha all think (comments, questions, opinions, etc) - trying to make some changes to the board, I ended up having to redo half of the database by hand (for the past two hours). Needless to say, NOT FUN! But all should be good now.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

After being up all night ...

Not only do we have a new look, but the entire site is condensed. There are now fewer topics, which should make it easier to decide where to post. Let me know ...

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It works now?! No clue what I did ... but I'm back to having the problem w/ NEAT (redhat's network admin tool not working) => it seems to be one or the other *sigh*

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmmm ... thanks for the suggestions. To be perfectly honest, I honestly sincerely think the problem is a combo of an uncommon gigabit network card and RedHat 7.3 (VMWare claims only up to 7.2 is supported, but it has always compiled and ran on 7.3 with no problems). In other words, not something on my end that's going wrong.

The problem started happening, originally, when I got my gigabit nic. (In fact, I remember VMWare working. Then I turned off the PC, swapped nics, turned the PC back on, and VMWare began to hate me.) Then I reformatted, and it actually worked ... but it was an ultra bad install and I royally screwed it up within minutes, and reformatted again, and it didn't work! I really think it was just a fluke that it worked.

Oh well. :/

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

ATTN: VMWare users!! Please help me! ...

(sorry this post is so long, I tried to be very thorough)

I have a WindowsXP computer with two nic cards. One of them is connected to a cable modem and another to a hub. Also connected to the hub are a linux box and a Windows98 laptop.

This linux box is a P4 with a linksys gigabit network card (10/100/1000mbps) and RedHat 7.3. The internet works perfectly and samba is set up so the linux box is a full participant in Network Neighborhood (can see both Windows pcs).

... I have a VMWare emulator installed on this linux box running Windows 2000.

When my virtual machine uses NAT networking, I can browse the internet, etc. When I browse Network Neighborhood, the Win2k machine is the only machine showing up on the network.

When my virtual machine uses bridged networking, I can browse Network Neighborhood with no problems. Network Neighborhood shows the Win2k machine, the RedHat machine, the WinXP machine, and the Win98 machine. However, there is a problem sending/receiving data packets over the Internet.

Communication between the virtual machine and the host linux box works perfectly (e.g. when I ftp to the linux box or browse files via Network Neighborhood). However, connection to any of the other computers OR to any part of the internet doesn't work so great - my upload speed is perfect, but my download speed is at a whopping 0.6kbps !! …

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nope ........ that's not it. Having this problem without VMWare even installed !! Must be something else causing it ... it started happening right after I ran up2date (RedHat's .rpm upgrade utility to upgrade already installed packages to newer versions)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Goodness gracious! Now I was able to get VMWare to work the right way (the networking works) but I started having this NEAT problem over again! I assume it's a problem with VMWare and Redhat's network configuration? Argh. Anyone with any ideas?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

hehe thanx aeinstein ...
yup, talking to myself looks like the best way to go!
(although reformatting really sucks ... it was actually over this "neat" thing that I reformatted and unfortunately got VMWare's network to stop working)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Problem solved! => I reformatted (heh, it's my answer to everything)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I've narrowed it down to this ...

NEAT is installed as an RPM. When I verify the package files, there are 60 discrepencies/errors. I uninstall the package, I reinstall the package. All is now good.

The sec I run the program though, it crashes! And then I go and verify the files again, and those 60 errors come back.

Also... once I get this problem, the only way to get out is to hard reboot. The system becomes unresponsive ... not even Ctrl+Alt+Del works!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I just looked it up ...

redhat-network-config = NEtwork Admin Tool for RedHat Linux

My problem now is figuring out whether my network config files are screwed up and this NEAT program is having a problem reading/interpreting them ... or whether the NEAT program is corrupted itself, etc ...

Any ideas? I can't see what's going on in the background when I run NEAT b/c the sec I do, it freezes on me.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Please help me!! I'm so frustrated. I know I have been a bit absent from techtalk lately but I've been super ultra busy ... one of my latest endeavors is working with Linux.

I have a Red Hat 7.3 system set up right now which works perfectly except for one thing (which just started happening out of no where, don't know how or why).

Everytime I go into XWindows and try to run "neat" (a graphical proggie for configuring a network), the window appears, freezes, and takes down all of linux networking with it! The same exact thing happens when I run redhat-config-network (which appears to be the same program?)

Any advice would be ultra helpful!
Thanx

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey Dan ... this one is for u:

ya know the binary blanket I have from thinkGeek.com? Well I just took a looksie the other day and saw they have a matching binary pillow! I think I'm going to get it!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

And to think I'm probably the only gal on the block with a ThinkGeek.com #!/usr/bin/girl t-shirt!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

To change? You mean to overclock? Ususally overclocking lets you get maybe 133MHz more out of your processor, but nothing is going to turn a PII into a PIII.

On the other hand ... if you mean is it possible to swap out processors in a computer. Well, that depends on the motherboard specs. PII motherboards are different than PIII motherboards - CPUs can't be swapped out.

It might be possible to swap a 366 celeron with a 500 celeron. Again, check the motherboard specs ...

Is this what you're asking?
I'm confused.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Whew ... I've never heard that one before. First of all, compatibility mode is for software that's already been installed (for running it). It looks like you've got some sorta other problem lurking if your computer can't read your cd-rom drive. Is it all cdroms it can't read or only older ones or ...

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nice new feature is that you can see a listing of all never answered posts (so they don't get buried as "easily") Also ... all posts you haven't seen yet since last visit :)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

It's been months. I take that as a no.

BTW ... Just so that you can be all happy that you've waited months and finally gotten a reply to this post only to find a nonsense comment ... here's a nice smilie face to cheer ya up! :P

Now don't you feel just so much better?
Well, you should, if for no other reason than TechTalk is finally in Dan-style!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

"kool beans" ... it's not a Dani-like thing to say

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

:!: did i just say that :?:

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

kool beans

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

See ... overall, I really like it. But the problem is that virtually all of the colors it uses aren't on the standard web palette. Just bringing the color depth on my machine from 32bit to 16bit wrecked it a lot. And I can understand where a lot of peeps are coming from when they say it doesn't display right on the schools machines, etc. (For example, instead of the tables having a 3D look, they all just look black, with the font a dark grey).

What I was thinking about was a very similar look/style with a white background instead. I don't know how it would work or be implemented but it's just a thought.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Tek told me that he's not too crazy about it ... he said the foreground/background colors are too close to each other making it hard to read. Someone else told me that it reminds him of a warez site. :!:

Any comments on this?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hey, peeps! It's been a few days and I was just wondering what ya'll think of the new layout. There's an ultra nice templating system behind it all, making it really simple to change just about anything. So please, if you have any comments, things you might think would be simpler, etc etc, please let me know! In the meantime I'll be here working on refining the HTML code (a few more hours left!)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Obviously ............ we have a whole new design here! Like it? Yes, no, maybe so? This time around there's complete customization ... so any feature you want, I'll definitely look into asap! I took everyone's opinion and decided to put the main forum index back onto the main page (it seems that was missed a lot). Any other ideas, please let me know!! :P

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Aaargh - damn svchost.exe

PPL say it's Microsoft's spyware at it's best ...
anyone with any *helpful* suggestions?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Back to your original idea, Dan, do you think Microsoft's version of java will catch on? it's just the jre they're implementing, right?

I probably sound like a moron about now but it **is** the "jre", right? Isn't that the environment thingie that java uses so that it can be cross-platform?

Damn these acronyms! (although linux is a lot worse when it comes to *that*)

btw ... did u know that PCMCIA (as in those laptop pcmcia cards) stands for People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms ?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Doesn't anyone wanna add Mac OS to the list?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Hmm ... inscissor, you are on AIM 24/7? I don't see ya on now ;)
