Hmmm ...
I'm still running Win98 on my laptop. I should really format the thing and put RedHat or some other linux distro on there. It does good w/ linux (no compatibility/hardware problems of any sort - which is pretty good for a y2k vaio)

Yes, just lovely ::)
Ahh, gotcha ;D
This isn't exactly a warez site, so you really should visit somewhere else. Be my guest and contact the ppl here who provide email addresses/screenames who might be able to help you, but we don't tolerate talking warez on here.
Sorry, but you're on your own for this one
I'm confused. What do you mean by "fix it" ?? Are you trying to reinstall it? I'm confused ... I can help you if you give more info as to what you would like to do.
grokster? Is that a file sharing program like Napster or Morpheus? I'm not sure ...
As far as using FTP, use an ftp program such as WS_FTP or, my favorite, SmartFTP (http://www.smartftp.com)
File sharing programs don't use standard FTP server/clients to transfer ... they use their proprietary ports ...
Just remember peeps, don't spam! ;D It's bad netiquette to post on other boards just with a link/advertisement to TechTalk, unless it's a specific free-4-all or link board.
We wanna promote this site, but the legit way!
(btw, this isn't aimed at you, aeinstein - you've already got the right idea - just telling peeps in general)
BTW ... the thread you are talking about is on the TechTalk Comments board.
Great minds think alike! I've already been doing that over at the forums at www.computing.net. I've been responding to a fair number of posts, and I sign each one of my responses:
TechTalk Forums
http://www.techtalkforums.com
The problem with that is it is awfully time consuming. And not only that, but computing.net doesn't hyperlink URLs typed in ... so it would actually require someone to copy/paste the URL into their browser's address bar (something very few people would be willing to do after they have already received a sufficient response to their inquiry).
I am plodding on, though! Still posting on computing.net! ... plod, plod, plod ...
I was talking to inscissor about promoting the other day, and he came to a conclusion that I definitely agree with. He showed techtalk to a bunch of ppl who work with him in web dev, and they weren't interested because they thought we don't have a big enough programming community to make us worth their time.
We were talking about it for a bit and decided it's perfectly understandable and we see where they're coming from - but that leaves us in a lose-lose situation. It's like we need techies for techies to come. But techies won't come unless there are techies here already.
Does anyone have any ideas about how I can further promote the site?
hahaha coooooool thank you !!!! (really i mean that !!)
Hmm ... no posts lately? I have been working my ass off everyday trying to promote this site, but to no avail. We've been getting a fair share of visitors, but no one seems to want to post or register >:( How frustrating!
I would expect most people who visit forums do so just to read posts instead of posting, but I was hoping for a better turn-out.
Maybe if everyone could just tell two people about us ... and then those two people could tell two other people ...
I'm desperate here, peeps!
Okay, back into the AddWeb Deluxe Edition website promoter!
And a reply ...
Just testing something on the board ...
Feel free to ignore ...
Well, this is no longer a problem ... the site has been redone to stretch the full width of whatever size window you happen to be using.
Gosh 2 out of 2 ppl so far at 800x600 ... and I thought that resolution was passee :D
;D hehe ;D
One more thing ... from experience, 1024x768 isn't too bad on a 15" monitor ;D
It might look a bit small at first, but give it a chance for a week and it'll be real tough to go back! You wouldn't believe how much more room you gain.
Nope! It won't be! I actually had a reason for stretching it this much ...
If you visited the Members Listing page ... with all those columns listing everyone's emails and websites and such, the smallest I was able to get the table was a lil bit over 800px! When all the rest of the pages had a width of 750px, the whole site was stretched when you viewed the members listing. Therefore, I made everything 850px so that one particular page isn't abnormally stretched.
A second reason, also. It's a lot easier to view the timestamps for the message index and board index (that extra 100px prevents the wraparound)
Thanks, raw! I'm glad to see that the site isn't too horrible for 800x600 peeps - makes me feel a bit better ;D
I streeeetched this site so that the main table holding everything is 850px wide instead of 750px. That means that it doesn't work at 800x600 resolutions anymore!
Is this bad? :'( Or better? ;D What resolution are you using?
hahaha sorry aeinstein - but I clicked on inscissor's link and saw it said Westbury and it was just too easy ;)
if any1 doesnt mind traveling to Garden City, LI, NY
:D Microcenter is in Westbury ;D
From what I've found, Microcenter is the cheapest for hardware (out of Best Buy, CompUSA, etc.) Their prices are usually comparable to what you can get the stuff for on the 'net.
Microcenter really sucks for software (never a good selection and everything they do have it always out of date) - but they're great for books and also for certain hardware. So far I've bought my printer, monitor, and even laptop from them.
As for Linux software - they're fantastic!! I got a bunch of Linux games from them for $2-4 each. When I went online to look them up, anywhere I went online sold them for $20-$30!
So... how's your new ram? Make a big difference?
OK well sorry but I can't take this one on account of I've never heard of Java3D. I'm a C++ programmer who's only taken a few glimpses at Java.
I'm pretty sure inscissor answered your original question in his first reply. No? Back to inscissor ...
You do know, of course, that as global moderator you can easily move misplaced threads, inscissor *hint hint*
Currently, only news from the Random Announcement Board can be posted on the calendar. Create a new topic in that forum as usual, and then check off a date next to the calendar option.
If anyone sees a need, I'll set it up so that other forums can post to the calendar too, but for right now I don't see a point.
Also ... If you noticed the poll on the index page ... it will always change to reflect the last poll created.
BTW ...... to see the calendar click on "Calendar" at the top there! :D
We've got a new calendar integrated with our forum!! Lemme know what you think, etc. The colors still need to be changed a bit, and some other stuff still needs to be added, but ... well ... it's a start!
I'm just sooooo not an ATI person. I used to have a Rage 128 and then a Radeon. When I realized that there weren't any good linux drivers for the Radeon I switched to Nvidia and never went back.
After hours and hours of work, it looks like all of the back-end code behind TechTalk is just about completely finished! All of the code has been optimized and (hopefully) I tried realllllly hard to make sure all the HTML code has been optimized.
All I need is a lil bit of help from you. For the next lil bit of time, just keep an eye out for things that don't look or work right (e.g. something is not centered that looks like it should be, tables are misaligned, functions don't function :D etc etc)
Also .... let me know what you think of this style. The good, the bad, the ugly. Would things be able to function better if moved around, etc. (E.g. suppose you want to create a poll but are confused how to do so - maybe I can make creating polls more intuitive)
etc etc etc
Other than that, it looks pretty much good to go!
A jumpbox is the lil JavaScript drop down menu with a listing of all the pages and a GO button. It's on the bottom right of most of the pages of the forum.
I just noticed the darn JavaScript jumpbox doesn't work on all of the pages! The code is the exact same for all of 'em ... I dunno what its problem is. I'm studying chemistry and computer architecture for 2 midterms right now ... but as soon as I get a chance I'll investigate. My thinking is maybe I have incorrectly nested forms. Who knows! Weird ...
1cplusplusstreet doesn't look like a tutorial of any sorts, but it does seem like a nice place to visit when you've got a C++ project due in an hour which you didn't start yet! 8)
Yeah, a little late. :) Of course let's not forget good ol' SparkNotes:
http://www.sparknotes.com/cs/.dir/
Darn do I love that site!
I know, I know I'm realllllly late with a reply ... but nice site. Coulda used this for Kamberova's CSC120 class last semester. http://www.cplusplus.com is good too
Goodness gracious ... must you really? After I spent all that time making a new section just for links? ;) In any case I already live at cplusplus.com as it is :P
Catcha latah

ooooooooh do I HATE slapstick humor! I'm going to run away from this thread now  8)
Bruce Almighty was really good :) I just saw it recently too. I used to absolutely hate Jim Carrey when he did all that stuff like Ace Ventura but ever since The Truman Show I have loved him.
Yeap, Dan, ya never crawl out of the programming section do ya. Ooooh I remember Logo - my first language (well, before BASIC). When I was like 4 years old I would make those pretty line drawings in Logo with a lil sheet next to my computer with a list of available commands to type in and what they did. :) If lets say I wanted to make a line go right, I'd scroll down my list to find "make line go right x amount" and then I'd think of a number, and then type the command in!
But is it just me, or did that lil critter never really look a lot like a turtle?
Hmm ... the only 3D programs I've ever used have been Amorphium, Bryce, and Poser. I don't think any of them are specifically targeted towards any Macromedia software however.
I live in Dreamweaver (and Photoshop, but that's besides the point) but when it comes to anything else by Macromedia, I'm clueless.
Inscissor is, however, attempting to get me involved in Flash this summer and for the most part it's working. Kudos for inscissor (in doing the impossible).
Inscissor may actually be able to help you ... send him a private message if you wish to get his attention because he rarely takes a look at anything outside the Programming boards. 8)
aeinstein, you forgot the http:// part of the URL so the system didn't parse it as a link. i fixed it for ya ;D
Very kewl ;D Nope, I don't waste any time, especially on a boring Sunday night/Monday morning *L*
I'll take a look at the links in the morning ... ;D
This board formally dedicated to aeinstein :)
Is this what you had wanted? ??? I'm still confused! ;D
Oh how honored! TechTalk the homepage on your mac! I guess I didn't think ahead in creating a links board :( so I guess the coffee house is the best place ...
Of course, people are posting links all over. Incidently, do you think I should create a new links category? Suggest away.
P.S. I'm still sorta a lil confused as to your original post. You have a perl-related link you want to post ... or am I backwards?
knalb is right, basically ISP's are trying to crack down on people running ftp servers/web servers
nope, that's definitely not normal - I open my browser and it says Hey, TechTalkGal ... I don't have to do anything.
