Google Webmaster Tools, Yahoo! Site Explorer ... As they said :)

Create good content that people will want to link to. Commit yourself to writing at least one new article per day. Each day, post a link to that new article on Twitter, Facebook, etc. You'll never run out of URLs to submit.

A "consolidated list of URLs" is not going to help you because it is very important that each backlink is targeted to your site/page, and contains the same keywords you are trying to reach. A completely untargeted PR7 link does just about nothing, except for set off red flags with Google.

I wonder how many people are actually searching for that obscure term. Weird find though, indeed.

The links point to the domain names of sites that, at some point, have linked to your profile. Search engine results don't count, so Google's homepage is included, for example, because at some point or another, someone probably visited a page in Google's cache and then clicked through from that page to your profile.

The best link building campaign is to constantly come up with unique, good, fresh content that people will naturally want to link to. Yes, it is time consuming. But it can also be very rewarding in the long run.

1) Unfortunately I am unable to reproduce this error. However, changes WERE made to the registration code earlier today, so I am not entirely convinced that it was a one-time glitch.

2) The login form uses CSS to be hidden by default. JavaScript is used to change the CSS attribute to visible. However, the actual html code is always present on the page with the div ID of 'loginform'. Alternatively, the default behaviour is to use a cookie so you shouldn't have to log into the site each time you visit.

3) This is done on purpose, to entice people to SAY what they may want to say, and then being required to register after they've already typed it all out. The fact that there is a signup form, but no login form, on the resulting page is a known bug that will be fixed in the near future. Sorry about that!!

You can, by subscribing to threads. You can create Subscription Folders where you can categorize the threads you subscribe to. Also, you can subscribe to some threads with email notification and some without.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The option to search within a specific thread currently isn't available. However, you can do a search and return individual POSTS instead of threads. www.daniweb.com/forums/search.php

PageRank is a scale in which Google measures the quality and quantity of incoming links pointing to your domain. It is an important factor in how you rank in the search results. Other factors affecting your ranking are the age of the domain, keyword density, etc.

IMO, the "made for AdSense" sites never make much money longterm (And by that I mean websites which you create just so that you can use AdSense to make some money.) The biggest money makers are really great sites that thrived long before AdSense and will continue to thrive long after ... Because they are good, quality sites.

Nick: If you don't want to see people's signatures, there is an option to hide them in the control panel.

Edit: OK, maybe a bit too harsh considering no one who posted in this thread has more than a 10% post quality score.

Hi,

Thanks so much for providing the solution :) I've marked this thread as solved.

In the future, when your question requires us to look at a live demo, try to provide a version of the demo that is not behind a wall. It will increase your response rate :)

It's always been clickable. It was a regular link in the old DaniWeb version. Then, when the new DaniWeb version came, it was still clickable, but I was using JavaScript to make it so.

Some of the regulars and mods complained that, because it was using JavaScript, you could no longer right click the link to open in a new window or new tab. Therefore, they couldn't go down the list of threads, opening a dozen of them up in lots of new tabs, and it ruined their workflow.

I just fixed this for them.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

... As are the selections on the homepage, btw ;)

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Yes, it's cookie driven.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Implemented.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I'm talking about the 'Last Post' column.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

'Last Post in Thread' is now an actual link (instead of a link via JavaScript) so you can right click on it to open in a new tab/window.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Let's face it. Nothing ever thrives after it changes hands.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Maybe ;)

It's not quite SEO, but you can "optimize" your Facebook fan page by promoting it on your site. Use the Facebook widgets available.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

I think more than the domain name, the full URL plays a part. Such as www.domain.com/keyword/keyword.html

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

So that your thread can be of assistance to others in the future, what solution did you manage to find?

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

OK good luck!

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Despite my criticism remarks, don't let that stop you or discourage you. Just tweak as you go until you come up with something great.

LOL, okay, even though the OP wasn't referring to DaniWeb

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

Nick: Yes, that is correct. However, because this is posted in the SEO forum and not the DaniWeb feedback forum, all of my comments were related to signatures across forums in general.

Dani 4,653 The Queen of DaniWeb Administrator Featured Poster Premium Member

The point I was trying to make is that even though when you change your signature, ALL of your posts are affected, Google won't necessarily re-spider and reindex ALL of your posts. Therefore, you will end up with Google recognizing some of your posts with your old signature and some of your posts with your new signature.

Playing devil's advocate here ...

If it has no niche, then WHY would someone join your social network, over say Facebook? Does it have super unique features that you can't possibly find anywhere else? Are there people talking on it right now? What reason would someone like me have for signing up to an empty site about randomness where there's no one else to talk to? When I can instead spend my time interacting on a social network with millions of users who are going to read what I have to say and respond to me right away for instant gratification?

In short ...
Step one: Give people a reason why yours is better. There has to be SOMETHING different that can't be found anywhere else. DaniWeb, for example, is unique in that we encompass everything IT under one roof, and we group content together (news, discussions, tutorials, etc) within a single timeline.

Step two: Give people a reason to stay. DaniWeb gained popularity because myself and my friends constantly posted on the site day and night for a very long time. Slowly, other people chimed in, because they saw that there were people to talk to. And anytime anyone new joined, we all instantly started talking to them, giving them the instant gratification they wanted, even if we weren't big. Fake it till u make it -- We gave people the communication and answers they wanted just as detailed and just as fast as if …

Hi,

Thank you for being a DaniWeb supporter :)

I recall an announcement about a year ago or so saying that Google was significantly increasing the weight they put on the age of domains, meaning that a site listed in DMOZ and the Yahoo! directory for ten years carries a lot of weight.

Many people also say that keywords in the URL are significant, and this URL has the word 'taurito' as both the directory name and the file name. I'm sure that plays a very large role as well.

Additionally, even though the title 'Taurito' is not wrapped in an H1 tag, it is in its own paragraph distinctly separated from, and above, the body content, and it is all in caps. Google's algorithm is probably smart enough to detect that, even though it isn't in an H1 tag, it is most likely the page's heading.

Page title also plays a significant role, especially in combination with the URL and the distinctive heading.
